View Full Version : Power Stations seen from Houndkirk Road
Albert T Smith 25-07-2007, 11:06 On Tuesday evening I went up on to Houndkirk Road, at the Fox House end.
Walking towards Ringinglow, I could see Six or Seven Power Stations.
I believe that these would be situated alongside of the River Trent allowing for sufficient available water for cooling and contingency fuel supplies to be available.
Does anyone have the names of the stations or know of their location, please?
GrinderBloke 25-07-2007, 13:24 I think you may be seeing the Yorkshire stations, Drax and Ferrybridge, rather than the Nottinghamshire power stations West Burton, Cottam & the now closed High Marham.

I assume that that would only be Two power stations?
I could see looking through my binoculars and moving in a 180' arc six or seven.
GrinderBloke 25-07-2007, 19:23 The only other power station I can think of is the disused Thorpe Marsh North of Doncaster.
Some of the stations are rather large with cooling towers split into two or more groups so may appear as separate stations.
Flying Duck 25-07-2007, 20:12 I think it is possible to see the Nottm power stations previously mentioned from the Sheffield area....not too sure about from Houndkirk, but I can't see why not.

The next clear evening we have, I'll nip up with a map and get the exact Grid Ref where I stand with a rough fix of the angle the Power Stations are from my position.

I believe there are currently only 2 coal fired power stations operational on the Trent at Cottam and West Burton both approx 30 miles from Houndkirk Road as the crow flies. See the following map for further info

The next clear evening or when I next go up, I'll give you a bell and you are available we can obtain fixes on them all.
Chesterfield Spire to be clearly seen along with a lot of other land markers.
The only problem was that I had not brought a map.
I believe on the right day with the right weather you can also see Lincoln Cathedral from this location so it should be rather easy to work out which power stations they are

It will be a lot easier with a map though!!

The first evening that it is clear and I've nothing to do I'll be up on the Hound kirk Road to have another look. I think that the last time I was up I spotted about Seven groups of power Stations.
Does anyone know how many Cooling Towers that their are to any , or each of the Power Stations?
This will make it a lot easier to identify them.
(The Electric Meter Reader must have heard about me on the Forum.
He's just called to read the meter!!)

Albert,
I believe the number of cooling towers at each location is
Ferrybridge = 8
Eggborough = 8
Drax = 12
Thorpe Marsh (Barnby Dun) = 6
West Burton = 8
Cottom = 8
High Markam = 5
Just gleaned all this from this really excellent site http://www.geograph.org.uk
which aims to collect geographically representative photographs and information for every square kilometre of the UK and the Republic of Ireland, and you can be part of it as it's free to sign up and submit your own photos
Albert, have you seen this thread (http://www.sheffieldforum.co.uk/showthread.php?t=31960&highlight=view+cathedral+round)? It explains the 'round table' pedestal on Fulwood Lane, which has lines scored on it to help identify things on the horizon, including power stations, the Humber Bridge and Lincoln Cathedral...
Did you ever make it to the waterfall on the Longdendale Trail?

I've missed that and I'm almost certain that I've got something somewhere about the pedestal. Anyway it will do me good to have a trip up this week.
We or I, haven't made it to the Longdendale trail or waterfall yet mainly because I've been waiting for ' Neoteric ' to come back with his posh camera so that he can stand under it whilst I'm taking the photographs.
It will have to be done soon or Winter will be upon us.

No problem Albert.
The holiday was great - a very remote and beautiful area of Scotland and some fantastic walks - plus doing the British Three Peaks on the return Journey.
You can see the photos here

Unfortunately will not have time for a trip to Houndkirk as I'm back at work later this week.

I'm going to copy your idea. The next clear day or evening I'll go up and get compass position readings on two or three that are clearly visible. From that using Google Earth, I should beable to locate the rest.
Don't ask me why I want to know, because I don't know!! I'm just nosey!!

Thanks for the look at your photographs.
No doubt they will be very useful as a guide in the future.
I can see that my quest is shortly to end!!
I still don't know why I want to know!!
Except I'm just interested.
