Honest mechanics are tough to find and not all of them can do the testing.

I'm looking for a place that will do me an MOT reasonably honestly and not try and rip me off by inventing some supposed defects in my car.

Any thoughts?

I have found Swift Autocare, Park Hill Swallownest to be ok. Used them a few times and they don't seem to rip people off.

I've always found One - Stop on Rockingham Street (bottom end off Furnival Gate) to be fine - they even have prices for MOT, services etc displayed on board in reception.

Garage always kept spotless, staff friendly and know their stuff.

If the city centre is handy for you, try Top Tread Tyres on St Mary's Road. £20 with a free re-test within 7 days if it fails (and they ave even been flexible with that for me).
Sometimes my cars have passed, sometimes they've failed, but I have never felt ripped off or anything, and they test 6 days a week from 8ish until late.

Been using Ghia for all the work that I have been unable to perform as well as for all MOTs in the last 5 years with no problem.

The maximum they have charged was £40 which included some remedial work.

Steadfast Autos the garage at the bottom of Rutland Road off Penistone Road (city end) has passed mine with no faults for the last three years and always give good advice + decent prices for work. Worth a go.

I also used Ghia in years gone by (is it sill the same 2 blokes that own it, Mick and Bill?) and they were every bit as good as everyone else states, esp. if you end up with some work that needs doing.

I would say choose the one recommended that is in the most convenient location.

After numerous bad and frankly fraudulent experiences, I was advised by a member of the family to go to the A57 testing centre, just a few hundred yards up the road from Asda in Hansworth.

The failure sheet came down from approx 8 items / £600 work to 2 items, both DIY for £50, and a free re-test within seven days.

Alwaus used MOTEC Auto Services off Ecclesall Road, down one of those sideroads just before the Tesco precinct and car park area...used them for 10 years, always failed my cars every time. (but then, they deserved to fail every time!)

I must admit I have used these before in the past in the days when I used to have MOTs, thankfully now I don't require them. I always found the Steadfast place to be honest/fair and pretty efficient. They were always very busy and it was sometimes a job to get my car booked in.

Deffo Ghia for me they are brill, mine's been in today for MOT and service and flew through and they are really friendly.
When I had my car broke into they sorted it same day for me and it only cost me £30 when my insurance company quoted me £80.

Excellent!

All MOT re-tests must be free up to 10 days after the car failed. Try Volks-tek in dronfield.

Been using One-Stop on Furnival Street for around ten years now following recommendation by my father in law and very impressed. Staff are polite and only do what's necessary.

when I worked in Rotherham in the late 80's I knew of an MOT garage that you posted a photo of your motorbike/car in along with £5 notes and he would post you a MOT certificate back.

Wanting a more personel service, I once took my untrusty Fiat 128 CL there: it was a pile of rusting cack. The right indicator would only work if the windscreen wipers were on (etc).

Parked it outside, gave him the keys and went to work. At lunchtime picked it up - passed. I noted that the fish n chip wrapper lodged under one of the wheels when I parked was still there at lunch.

Hmmmmmm

Sadly, he was eventually lost his MOT licence.

Well Gents and Ladies, its that time of year again.

Time for me to try out a new MOT centre!

I'm booked in at Snuff Hill garage on Ecclesall Road next week and will let you know the damage - I might even send my naive girlfriend in and see if they rip her off or not!
