At Heeley by the railway bridge there is a car scrap yard on the left as you head towards town, I'm sure they had a steam cleaner in there but I may be a bit out of date.

All mordern engines are full of electronics and sensors. just make sure all of it are well protected as electric and water dont mix that well! all steam cleaning place have a disclaimer saying they are not responsiable if it damage anything

^^What he said.

The number of places you can get your engine steam cleaned has declined as the amount of engine parts which are damaged by the steam has increased.

My advice would be to only consider steam cleaning an engine in situ if there is no other option, purely because of the number of bits which can die when the high pressure steam gets in there.

spray "gunk" on the engine area while the engine isnt too hot/running, and allow it to soak in for a short while as per instructions. start your engine and then jet wash the gunk off thoroughly. takes a few minutes at most, and works well, just be careful how close you get if its a very powerful jet wash/pressure washer. you dont need steam to clean an engine bay up quite well using this method.

Just bringing this thread back to life.... I had an "incident" which resulted in oil going all down the engine after slipping when putting some in. Ever since there has been smoke and a burning smell coming from under the bonnet. I went to the garage but they said the only way to resolve it is by steam cleaning.

Does anyone have any different ideas?

It should soon burn itself off and the smell should go. I had an engine steam cleaned once.Obviously they did not take enough care,as I remember having numerous problems with the electrics afterwards.I may have just been unlucky but I would never have one done again.Engines are meant to be mucky!

Jizer (yes this is a real product), a bog brush and some elbow grease. Keep steam/water away!
