I want to make my sisters new baby the alphabet blanket (http://www.castoncastoff.co.uk/blog/category/projects/alphabet-blanket/)from Debbie Bliss 'the Baby Knits book'. The only thing is that it uses DB wool/ cotton which is discontinued. Are there any reasonable subs for this (tension 25 sts and 34 rows to 10cm square using 3.25mm needles)? Cashmerino might work but I was liking the idea of the cotton content:roll:

Someone at my new knitting group was doing this last night - they were using a Patons 4 ply me thinks.

Carrie at the knitted bear (http://knittedbear.blogspot.com/) is on her second in DB baby cashmerino. If you search her site for baby blanket you'll turn it up. I remember that she had a problem with the border, you might want to read about that before you get to that bit - the number of stitches that the pattern tells you to pick up made her edge ruffle.

It's enough to make anyone's edge ruffle! :hihi:

Right today I went and had a look at Rowan wool cotton as a sub which although it is very nice and would probably work quite well it would cost me about a zillion pounds to knit so thats out:roll: Im wondering about Bergere de France Ideal as the tension is approximately the same, its meant for baby things and its machine washable (which has to be a bonus with baby things). I will consult Jill on this issue tomorrow if I get there (its school hols and Robin is away):D

Thanks for the link W4B - I knew there was an error in the chart but didnt know about any ruffle problems so I will have a search though her blog:)

Well OK maybe exaggerating a little - but over £50 for a blanket thats going to be sicked on is maybe a bit too much :suspect: :hihi:

Hi LisaH good to "see" you again, I think the BDF Ideal is just that, after all it is only going to get "sicked" on!!

I'd agree with Turra, baby stuff needs to be machine washable. Does tension matter that much in a blanket anyway? Glad you're back. :)

Oh £50 is way too much! Definitely needs to be machine washable too. I once made the horrible mistake of making a baby blanket in acrylic and it just wasn't very soft at all.

Baby Cash is the sub for wool/cotton. Therefore, you are quite right Lisa, BdeF Ideal will be just fine. No cotton content unfortunately
