View Full Version : Any good pubs in Sheffield? Guest 05-01-2003, 04:30 AM I hear the Fitzooth & Firkin in Broomhill is good. Is it?? andyb 05-01-2003, 08:12 PM I should be able to help out if you can narrow your criteria down to what sort of pubs. richard 06-01-2003, 12:04 AM Its not too bad, the food has gone off, and the beer is cheeper a little way up the road at the Fox and Duck, which is busy throughout the year, even when the Students have gone home, because although it is owned by the Sheffield University Union of Students, all the Broonhill locals have seemed to take a likeing to the place. Especially retired gentlemen. A pub called "the place" opened and its food is better but has a rubbish atmosphere as far as Im concerned, although that doesn't stop a lot of people going to it. I think all the cream colors just bug me. Guest 06-01-2003, 12:51 AM Thank you both for your help. I'm writing a paper on English pubs and I'm trying to find out more information. It would help if I knew who the owner is of the Fitzooth and Firkin. Guest 06-01-2003, 11:32 AM I assume the Fitzooth & Firkin is part of the firkin chain of pubs, which are currently being rebranded as the 'it's a scream' pubs. 'It's a scream' pubs are owned and operated by Bass brewers. On this info i again, presume that 'Firkin' pubs are also owned by Bass. You might want to confirm this by way of a phone call to the Bass marketing department. Hope this helps in your paper. richard 07-01-2003, 10:57 AM If you want to see a pub a little bit out of the Ordinary you should go and viit the Dove and Rainbow, I shant spoil the surprise. here are some directions:- At the Castle Sqaure Tram stop (in town) head downhill to the argos superstore (very close) and walk through the passageway on its left, and its right in front of you. Guest 08-01-2003, 04:03 PM The Fitzooth & Firkin has gone back to its original name of "The Nottinghamshire House". Depnding on your definition of a 'good pub' I suppose its OK. Tends to be too full of students for my liking. If you want real ale pubs the ones I can think of off the top of my head are (in no particular order)..... The Fat Cat The Cask & Cutler The Devonshire Cat Hillsbourogh Barracks Gardeners Rest ..and for the worlds strongest beer there's the Frog & Parrot. Guest 11-01-2003, 12:48 AM Thank you all for your help. I had heard Fitzooth and Firkin was undergoing a rennovation. Was there a grand re-opening? Malaika 11-01-2003, 07:29 PM when you find a good one let me know. I've lived here since all my legal drinking time but each time I find a pub I like they either knock it down (the hornblower) change hands and take away the pool table (the Ranmoor Inn one name amoung many, or rip out the insides and turn it into a nasty noisy towny bar where it's expensive, you are forced to stand up and are both deafened and made horse due to the music, (the Hallamshire, now BRB to name but one of these ) the Washington in town is pretty good, it has two distinct halves, the regular older bit and the blue music peoples side. It's was bought by a Pulp guy I think, to ensure that it stayed the same!! i am clearly now that I read this, a disgruntled 25 year old rapidly sounding like my dad. N richard 11-01-2003, 08:07 PM Where's the Washington then? Malaika 12-01-2003, 12:06 PM I'm terrible on road names. As you head down West Street it's the road that cuts down the side of Devonshire green (they're in the process of building new flats on the right side of this road), on the skate park side. This road reaches the debenams duel carrigeway at the bottom. The Washington is on the laft about half way down the raod on the corner of the junction of the road that the Devonshire Cat is on.! Hope this makes sense. Also, went in the new revamped nottingham house and , eugh, way too bright, loads of sspace for standing, ie less seats and worst of all, they've got rid of the table footie, another bad pub change to go on my grumpy list. Michael_W 12-01-2003, 08:36 PM Try these links from a Google search for Sheffield Pubs: http://www.sheffieldpub.co.uk/ http://www.sheffieldpubs.fsnet.co.uk/Index.htm BlueOwl 17-01-2003, 04:18 AM You don't want to go near any pub that has been "Firked". Good pubs in Sheffield? Well it isn't really a pub but Hanrahans Wine bar on Glossop Road is very nice and the bar staff are generally pretty damn good looking and friendly. Legend has it that that this is the setting for the Human League's "Don't You Want Me Baby", although Phil Oakley denies this. Aside from that the studenty pub a few mtres up the road do very nice meals. Other than that the Barracks down in Hillsborough is a good real ale pub and their is more talent down "The Deep End" (also Hillsborough) on a Sunday afternoon than you can shake a stick at. RSVP in the town centre opposite Barkers Pool is also good for totty watching. Guest 17-01-2003, 06:14 AM What do you mean by "Firked"?? richard 17-01-2003, 05:16 PM Hanrahans is now called Cassa. (I think, definately not hanrahans anymore though) Paul Cocker 17-01-2003, 06:52 PM I can also recommend Hillsborough Barracks, a great classic pub with a good range of beers and also live music on some nights, specially Saturdays. Same guy also owns The Sheaf View I think. catmiss 14-02-2003, 12:35 AM Shouldn't that be the Nottingham House? Guest 14-02-2003, 10:24 PM I was wondering about the Nottingham House. What's it like? HappyShopper 12-10-2003, 02:15 AM Try The Cannon on Castle Street........... alchresearch 12-10-2003, 12:20 PM Originally posted by Guest I was wondering about the Nottingham House. What's it like? Is that the one just up from the Children's Hospital? shotofadds 12-10-2003, 04:52 PM That's the one (formerly Fitzooth & Firkin). Haven't been in since it changed back to the Notts House as I'm at the wrong end of the country just now...was a decent enough place but don't remember anything /all/ that special about it. You want to go a bit further up the hill to the Grindstone in Crookes - that's a proper pub in my book... Classic Rock 13-10-2003, 01:17 PM If you need any specific help on pubs (running of them, etc) then drop me a line. I'm a landlady, after all! Oh, and....I would say the Classic Rock Bar is a good pub. Good food, good ale, low prices, the place where Sheffield Forum meets, attractive bar staff :D and fabulous music. La la la la.... goldenfleece 21-10-2003, 01:28 PM Originally posted by Classic Rock If you need any specific help on pubs (running of them, etc) then drop me a line. I'm a landlady, after all! Indeed. I need some help. i want to run one myself, an alternative style venue shall we say NOT A KAROAKE DANCE CLUB/BAR, if u know what i mean...rock and alt stuff. Already tried to get a few places but failed, but they probably were not that suitable for what i had in mind. Oh well, the right place will come along eventually i expect.....do you know Eclesall Road REALLY needs another *different* drinking experience to contrast with the 2 million wine bar style places. Classic Rock 22-10-2003, 10:09 AM I can't help you FIND a pub....see the related thread to this.....but can offer tips on how to run it if you get one. goldenfleece 22-10-2003, 10:17 AM All hints appreciated, tell me more. I have all the relevant experience, worked in pubs, did the pub management course and licencees exam, etc. Fletch 24-10-2003, 04:28 PM The Cobden View on Cobden View Road in Crookes has a good friendly atmosphere and aslo does good beer!! has pool table darts board and live music most nights plus has a few quiz nights where you can win a gallon of beer Belle 24-10-2003, 04:33 PM Classic Rock bar aside of course, my personal favourite pub in Sheffield is the New Barrack Tavern on the main road north, is it called Penistone Road? The pub is just a shave before Hillsborough Morrisons It looks a bit crap from the outside but it is great Great real ale, great food, I think it is in the Good Food Guide as well as the Good Pub Guide I can heartily recommend it My second favourite would be the Fat Cat down at Kelham Island, for the two same reasons - good food and beer They both have small beer gardens which are nice in the summer too Christoph 24-10-2003, 09:59 PM The Fat Cat and Kelhem Island are both good pubs, but their location means I have only been drunk enough once to brave walking through that part of Shalesmoor. Get yourself down to the Grapes on Trippet Lane. Best Jukebox in town bar none. Get a nice pint of Magnet. Nice large pool room as well (If going on Friday make sure you get there early because there's this guy who looks like the guitarist out of Dire Straits who hogs it all night with his friends and then mocks your drunken attemps at trying to hit the ball). Lively atmosphere all round, and sometimes a good live band upstairs. Also if your about that part of town, make sure to check out the Red Deer, as they serve a myriad of potions there ms de meaner 26-10-2003, 06:25 PM the red deer IS a great pub - lovely beer and an open fire :D |
