We are looking at moving to Penistone but are a bit worried that it's out of the way and there's not much going on as we currently live 1 mile outside Sheffield centre.
We've not got kids yet but want to move to a good area before we plan our family, hence looking further out of Sheffield. We also want more house and land for our money than you get in 'inner' Sheffield.
I've been told that it's colder than Sheffield as it's on a hill and is windier.
I'd like to hear from anyone living in Penistone about what it's like, especially for 25-35 year olds.
it is a bit remote...but lots of people like that village type atmosphere without being too clicky...a friend of mine just moved out of wentworth mews...she said it was just too quiet.
not a lot to do unless you like the local pubs....try getting a taxi there from sheffield centre!.
Think and check it out before you move:)

Hi Boosh,
Where has your friend moved to?
I'm posting this thread as I have my doubts. I really like the idea of moving somewhere where you get more house and garden for your money and is close to the countryside.
I was also looking at Stannington but there aren't many houses coming up that meet our criteria.
I was looking at Deepcar, Stocksbridge etc. but Penistone seems to have better facilities than they do even though it's further out.
We need to be within a reasonable distance of the M1 as my OH works in Leeds. We want a 'reputable' area but don't want to pay through the teeth for something and the house has to have a drive and big garden. We also want to be in the catchment area for good schools for when we are ready to have kids...
Any ideas and help gratefully appreciated!
Penistone isnt really that much cheaper than Sheffield. Although its a bit further out the prices have still risen as its good for commuters. I personally like Penistone and Oxspring and the villagey feel you get walking around but dont expect too much more for your money as you wont get it.

Sounds nice. I had a look at it while searching but we're looking for a 4 bed property with seperate lounge, dining room and kitchen downstairs. There's not much comes up in your area, at least not within our price range, otherwise we'd definitely consider it!
I have lived in both Deepcar and Penistone - currently living in Ecclesfield.
I lived in Penistone during my 20's although I liked it there it is very quiet and not much going on in terms of entertainment, just the pubs. Taxi from Sheffield very expensive!
It is colder and windier but is surrounded by lovely countryside. It's a nice market town with many large terraced properites at reasonable prices. Although not really much cheaper than Sheffield.
Deepcar and Stocksbridge are more accessible to Sheffield. New local tram link bus service every 10 mins to Middlewood has improved access. Again surrounded by countryside.
I would certainly consider living in both these areas again.

Lived a mile or so away from Penistone at Hoylandswaine years ago,
it is cold and if you are use to a city it may seem quiet.
You get more for your money as it is some distance from any towns Barnsley is the nearest.
20 mins drive in...train station on doorstep. Property is much, much cheaper than Sheffield - or at least Sheffield's most desirable areas (nb: asking price means nothing in Sheffield - properties I bid for in Shef went for an average of 15k above asking) Penistone being developed - new flats, new supermarket, talk of re-opening the Manchester line...amazing market two days a week, clos(er) to Leeds and manchester than Sheffield. Quiet...but, then, if you work in Sheff you have the urban thing! I'm made up to be moving to Penistone!
and lots of Sheff 'professionals' are moving out there (good or bad thing?!)...getting quite a boheme feel about it as well as still having a real sense of community - crime not much of a problem either...
