View Full Version : How often do you shave?
All the gents out there will know what I mean, you either do it the night before work when you're tired and ready for bed or in the morning when you are stumbling around half asleep!:P
I always leave it exactly 3 days before each shave as it comes out alot smoother, some guy's shave every day and others even use a handheld shaver! oooh the dry skin!:(
So how often do you shave and do you prefer wet or dry? handheld shaver or gillete's turbo-mach-chicken-fillet-3000 etc?
You can borrow my 'rip-them-out-by-the-roots' machine if you like :hihi: :hihi:
muddycoffee 16-12-2004, 19:39 I'm sorry but there are not enough options. Despite being 35 I only need to shave every 4-7 days. I don't need to stay totally stubble free for my job, and besides it isn't that thick. Not everyone is a gorilla.....
Having blonde whiskers as facial hair I rarely have to shave but I try to do it every three days though.
Makes me look a bit smarter :P Although I have been know to go a long time without it and look like a tit!
Definately night before, Im not a morning person, body is still asleep and I leave myself open to cuts and dabs of tissue all over the face :shakes:
Every two or three days for me. Any longer and i start to look like Grizzly Adams, although i get a much better shave the longer i leave it.
It's a pain in the ass either way!!:hihi: :hihi:
nuf_said 16-12-2004, 19:58 Having to wear those little Japanese flags on your chin!
Urgh, my fella shaves when he can be bothered and it drives me nuts cos I end up looking like I've been snogging a hair brush and my face gets really sore and stings (bit like having a shave maybe?)
So, he doesn't get kisses while he's hairy.
I've bought him every contraption going for shaving, I think electrolysis or Veet is the next step :D
mr craig 16-12-2004, 20:06 Usually every friday and saturday and usually once during the week, unless i'm going out.
Flaming heck you lot, I need to shave at least once per day, and if me and areowdlass are going out it has to be twice or else it's the busted rug look

Naaaarr mate, I am not that pretty     pass me some :P
I shave whenever I can be bothered... quite litrally... I'm at University, I work part time and I dont need to bother for that... so really its when I get bored of growing it and shave or when I'm going out and might see some fine lady's :D
but seen as my facial hair is ginger/blonde it really doesnt matter how long I go you can barely see it even when its long... although it's a lot thicker and darker than it used to be, but still ginger... bummer... maybe i should grow it really long and have a big ginger covered head and look like an orangutan! :D
I had to start shaving when I was about 14 and ever since then I've shaved at least once a day, unless I'm really lazy.
The only time I went for more than a couple of days was on some wilderness trips, and the itching drove me up the wall!
I quite dislike shaving; I think if somoene came up with a means of stopping facial hair growth for a few months at a time I'd definitely consider it!
(NOT electrolysis or plucking!!)
Joe
Grow a beard Joe, look like a good, old and wise moderator and then change your pic ;)
yeah Joe, become Santa for a week ! :hihi:
A.B.Yaffle 16-12-2004, 21:07 I shave every other day, except during the school holidays when I only shave if I am going out drinking. :)
I can't stand shaving as I have sensitive skin and often my face stings for the rest of the day. If I was to shave last thing at night I would basically have too much growth in the morning, so I am required to shave in the morning. I shave every day.
I used to be in a job which required me to shave twice a day which was very annoying. The proper shaves that you can get at the barbers are great and I usually last me a few days before I need another one.
Why is it this thread seems to be aimed at male forumers - beards apart some women get fed up with shaving too you know

let us know when you shave your beard Sian :hihi:
You'd know if I didn't - would give you awful stubble burn :P
A.B.Yaffle 16-12-2004, 21:38 My fiancee almost went beserk earlier because she couldn't find my shaving gel. She wanted to shave her legs before going out on her college Xmas outing.
Noooooh!
I'll never grow a beard - I think were I to do so it would become a protected habitat for all sorts of wildlife!
My stubble is quite tough as well - not Desperate Dan tough but not far off it.
I suppose the one positive of all this is that shaving's never really caused me too much trouble - no rashes or anything.
Joe
ToryCynic 16-12-2004, 22:53 I don't have much hair - :o, but do have a bit of hair above my top lip - don't want to grow it into a tash - I guess I'll have to start shaving...
Alex
Although the itching is annoying, I like messing with my mid-length stubble :P

If I were you I would prolong shaving for as long as you possibly can or get the get to lick it off. :P
Martin_s 16-12-2004, 23:05 five'o'clock shadow at 10am that's me...
When designer stubble came into fashion I was finally given an excuse... but damn there's no hiding when I've kissed someone

Same here! And I'm still with it - quick scrape down with beard trimmer set to finest cut once a day. Takes about 15 seconds:)
Fortunately, Mrs Draggletail likes it:hihi:
Mrs V loves the designer stubble look but she will not let me near her when i have it so it is a rareity in our household!.
If i shaved in the morning, i wouldn't make it to work. I don't wake up until about 10:30!. MMmmmm.... Lots of nice blood!!!.

One of our female duty managers has bad facial hair.
I shave when it becomes irratable. I cannot dry shave because that makes the itching worse, I have to wet shave.

Well when u find that elusive "nice woman ages 17 - 22" that'll stand u in good stead I'd say. Wet shave = much smoother.
Mrs Draggletail aside most of us (sooooooo understand where Mrs Vidster is coming from) object to having our chins sandpapered :P

I couldn't agree more Strix!
Ned Ludd 17-12-2004, 08:44 On the rare days I don't shave first thing I have usually succumbed by tea time. It's really irritating, it's as if I can sense every bristle.....and the thought of getting grease on it (ugh)
It is a nuisance task though.
I once applied the wife's Imac liberally to my fizog and left it for 3 times longer than advised.....I ended up with a sore face and ....... bristles.:(
I think that oven cleaner may work but I can't quite summon the courage to try it!
Think I've posted on this topic in the past. Being single means I can freestyle my shaving habits. Today I am clean shaven, yesterday I had a monster of a beard, next week I may have a goatee. I find shaving everyday very uncomfortable as I have to shave against the grain to get a totally smooth face. If I shave against the grain with quite fresh stubble, I end up with a load of cuts and a nasty rash. I don't care how many ex-gfs have told me clean shaven is best; the bloody rash face is not a good look.
Yodameister 17-12-2004, 08:57 There are 3 occasions when I shave
1 I am working and would look really scruffy otherwise (I proba shave twice during the working week)
2 I am going ou and would look incredibly scruffy (going out and just looking a litle scruffy is fine!)
3 Theres a good chance I'm going to be kissing someone who doesn't like having their face sandpapered!
Swan_Vesta 17-12-2004, 10:57 I find it really annoying, I have to be clean shaven for work and it ticks me off that the idea of a bit of stubble could somehow impede the way I do my job (don't see customers so its not an issue).
Whilst writing this I've realised that I don't have to shave for two weeks over the Christmas break, although will probably end up doing so as the missus will complain about the facial foliage.
I dont mind either way...
I think a little stubble looks quite attractive  Some men can look too baby faced when clean shaven...
I like my man with or without stubble... grrr!
Once a week... and this is too much already... Seems like I have too sensitive skin...
My facial hair growth is not that bad though... I look clear baby faced on Saturday night out, a little stubble midweek, and like I need to get shaved on Saturday morning... :)
I have to shave every day because our lass says I make the top of her legs sore :heyhey:
i HATE shaving - and i never know what suits me, stubble or smooth faced - i think i look better with a bit of stubble so it suits me to be a bit lazy when it comes to shaving :D
My face is smooth as a baby's arse.
I shave 3 times a week including this morning.
If a proper barber shave is so effective, why don't you guys use the hot and cold towel method at home?
Just microwave a damp flannel, apply to face before shaving to bring the bristles out, shave and finish with a dash of ice cold water or alcohol based aftershave lotion to encourage them to retreat again!
Can somebody let me know if this actually works?

Going to shave prior to going out tonight so might give this a try, sounds plausible.
Let me know how you get on, Yoda?
I can't try it myself, for reasons some people here don't find very obvious!
Yodameister 17-12-2004, 13:40 I don't actually have a microwave or a flannel, but I will imrpovise with a small towel and a steamer!!
Ive recnetly grown a beard....its got a bit scraggy but last night I trimmed it....Its ace not shaving....
shaving is for sheep and bairns :)
Shave every 2 days, if not i look like something out of plant of the apes.
:)
If anyone can get rid of shaving then please do so!
So how did you get on, Yoda?

Thats pretty weird, no offence but I honestly thought you were female... oooppps sorry about that!
Back on topic, I wet shave in the shower using frothy soap, the the that bothres me the least.
Do not always shave, sometimes experiment with sidies etc....

Didn't really notice a lot of difference with using a hot damp towel.
I think it works just as well if you close the bathroom door and run the hot tap for a while to make it a steamy atmosphere.
NatalieSheff 22-12-2004, 09:35 gees you only have ur vace to do, its such a small area! dont moan - try doing legs!!
The legs thing is different though Nats, your legs get to wear tights and stockings and have another leg to keep them warm!:P
Unless you're a bank robber! our faces get no protection after shaving every couple of days. The worst thing is - the hair can get really tough and needs lots of facial massaging with shaving foam before shaving!
I always hate missing abit!:o Once I got home from work and my sis kept looking at me, after a while she moved closer and said 'you've got some weird hair under your nose' I'd missed a thin line on my top lip and it looked SOOOO stupid! I bet the guy's at work had been laughing all day!!:(
Funky Dave 22-12-2004, 10:35 At least you can cover the legs though. You can't exactly walk into work in a Hannibal Lecter mask if you decide you can't be bothered shaving any more.
For the record, once every two days but really ought to do it daily.
Yodameister 22-12-2004, 10:39 I think it does your face some good to have the occasional 10 day break from shaving, after all it is a natural state to have facial hair, and scraping a blade across it every day doesn't really do you a lot of good.

In some work places ( mine ) though Yoda, you're not allowed a beard and stubble must be controlled and look presentable.

I have to look presentable for my job. I can generally get away with shaving on Wednesday morning and then not shaving again until Monday morning though (but then again, my beard doesn't grow that fast)
I didn't vote in the poll as there wasn't an option for;
'whenever I feel like it, usually when I've got a job in an office with some nice looking lasses present'
And that's that, I just have a shave when I can be bothered. Saves money on blades and foam as well!
NatalieSheff 22-12-2004, 11:00 my man used to have ot ask permission if he wanted to grow a beard (at work). shaven boys look better, stubble rash hurts!

I shave my legs (only during the season), but then I'm a cyclist!
NatalieSheff 22-12-2004, 12:26 my mate does too and under his arms.
Captain_Scarlet 22-12-2004, 14:04 Shaving is VERY annoying... It's just a fag doing it... Taking your time, beeing careful. so a shave every 3 day is my thing.
JonJParr 30-12-2004, 09:37 I choose to shave everyday (because of work) and don't particularly to as I have sensitive skin. I use the following products which help to make it more pleasant tho:
1) Clinique M-Shave Gel (loads of aloe vera, fragrance free and non-drying)
2) Anthony Logistics Algae Facial Cleanser (non-drying, cleans those pores out, smells nice too!)
3) Clinique Post Shave Healer (to cauterize those nicks and take the burn away)
Two useful tips, which help make shaving more pleasant.
1) Change your razor blade every week! Shaving with a blunt blade causes ingrowing hairs and spots.
2) Wait at least 20 minutes after waking up before shaving. Go make yourself a double espresso. Skin goes loose when you sleep (the muscles relax) and you'll cut yourself more!
you want to try using a proper razor like a cut throat I have used my grandads since I started shaving when I was 16 years old I dont know how old it is but my grandad used it when he was in the army and he died aged 78 he once showed me how to use it well he showed me quite a few times until I got it right. If you want a proper shave then try using one of these you need a very steady hand to use it I once tried to shave when I had been out the night before big mistake I finnished up with 9 stitches in my chin my hand was not very steady that morning. I have had to replace the strop about 4 times they are getting harder to find nowadays if you want to know what a strop is it is the belt like thing what you sharpen the razor on I dont use shaving cream well not in a can I use the proper stuff shaving brush and proper shaving soap. When I have shaved with that razor and then come to the part of putting the aftershave on I have been known to dance round the room because of the pain I get with it stinging, I suppose that one day I might have to replace it with something more modern or I could grown a beard and do away with shaving for good ! who knows.
SilentStatic 31-12-2004, 18:19 I hate shaving
Need to do it every couple of days and my skin always itches afterwards - no matter what 'sensitive skin' stuff I use. And how can blades simultaneously not quite shave all the stubble *and* cut me whilst (not) doing so?
Damn sensitive skin. Any tips? Think I'm wasting my money with that Gillette ultramegasuperturbomach5000 stuff...
Edit - and I've just thought - how come shaving stuff doesn't come with instructions? All I had to go on was the Simpsons episode where Homer thinks he's only got 23 hours left to live :P
what you need to do is find out if you can use a electric razor you mind find out that it is a lot better there is a fair few on the market that accounts for sensitive skin,My son uses one it is a philishave that puts a cream on is face while he is shaving it take some getting use to at first but I would stick at it though at one time of the day you could get a pre elecric aftershave what was designed for sensitive skin why they stopped making I have know idea but try it you might find it a lot better, you dont have to buy the most expensive electric razor the first one I bought my son was a philishave and it only cost me £ 29.99 now that christmas as gone I am going to buy one for him which should be £129.99 I will get it for £39.99 so give it a try you never know my son as said to me that he will never go back to wet shaving again.

I shave every day, or I look like desperate dan..
I use a philishave wet'n'dry shaver, and use it with regular shaving cream, not the stuff in the tiny sachets. much better.
I shave in the shower, at the end of a long hot shower, so loads of steam around for a comfortable electric wet shave.
Wet electric shaving can shave as close as a blade, and is quicker and more comfortable.
However, being a wet shave it still can cut you! but not as badly as a blade.
Panasonic also do some very good wet/dry shavers.
John
electric for me every other day usually.
give other bits a quick trim depending on the likelihood of any action.
JonJParr 12-09-2005, 09:28 I always used to wet shave but have recently switched to a Braun Activator 8595. I shave everyday apart from Saturdays & Sundays [when I usually just let it grow].
