I live nearby and a few people have made the same comment. Who'd have though a sign could get everyone so 'fired up'? (I'll get my coat).

On a slightly more serious note - it is a beautiful cemetery, I am lucky enough to see it from my bedroom window, and hope that as many people as possible come along for the day and see the monuments.

Not so long ago I tried to launch a Friends of City Road Cemetery group with limited success. Hopefuly this will generate more interest in the space and ensure it retains its beauty.

*slaps head*

I've been having trouble with local miscreants (featured in a recent thread), my brain was wandering into burning juvenile delinquents alive territory when you said 'deal with people nearby', of course you couldn't 'deal' with all the locals like that - most of us are actually quite nice.

Anyway, I've made my grave mistake... on with the bad puns

You bunch of stiffs and deadbeats havent you got any thing better to do than dig up dead and buried jokes about crematoriums. Afterall the news is full of burning issues, and on every corner theres some guy shouting about fire and brimstone. Wake up people and make no bones, we've all got skeletons in the cupboard, talking of cupboards anyone know how to Rig a Mortus?
We all have grave discisions to make about avoiding the pitfalls of life and remember "its not the cough, that carried her off, its the coffin, they carried her off in!

If I dont get Stuffed and Mounted for that lot I'll be a very lucky Moses.

On the subject of the above, it has just reminded me of an advert for a forthcoming film(yes I know it's a different subject, but has the same relevance with how the wording was put). The film is Evan Almighty, and it was recently advertised at the Brightside Lane/Hawke Street junction, as "flooding into cinemas, August(can't remember the date). After what that area suffered a few weeks ago,it didn't seem appropriate wording. I like the City Road Cemetry sign. Sometimes I don't think people realise whatthey have put until it's too late

The open day was really good. It was really interested to see what they do and the behind the scenes stuff was strangly comforting. It was respectfuly done.

Its a real shame that so many grave stones and memorials are now unsafe but they're doing a good job making the best of a bad situation.

I have to admit that we saw the sign last week and it definately said everyone not everybody. We looked specifically because of this thread too .............. still funny all the same.

The room where they do the cremations actually has a 'smoking prohibited' sign, made me giggle. I asked if the employees had to do a mass exodus if someone puts cigarettes in the coffin

On a similar note, but in Rotherham, there used to be a sign on the run up to the mortuary, which was (and might still be) situated towards the chest clinic at the back of the main hospital building. It read:

"Morgue - Dead Slow!"

Always appealed to my rather strange sense of humour when I saw it!
