View Full Version : Wharncliffe Woods Walk Sunday 29 July
neoteric 22-07-2007, 16:03 This walk is about 7.5 miles next Sunday 29th July around Wharncliffe Woods near Grenoside. The walk includes Wharncliffe Crags, and for most of the way is on cycle tracks or the Trans Pennine Trail.
The walk will commence at 10.45 outside the Old Harrow on Main Street at Grenoside, finishing probably around 4 hours later at the same place.
For people arriving by bus, the no 66 leaves platform c4 of the Interchange at 10.15 and gets to Main Street at 10.35. I`ve not checked return times yet but will update and post the details later.
Last time we were there in Sunny March we had a buffet put on for us at the Old Harrow for £3.50 per head, I think we could arrange the same this time but we would need to give the landlord a couple of days notice - so if you're interested in the food just indicate in the post or PM me - I for one will be eating there.
For further infomation on this walk see www.theaa.com/travel/details/cycleride/418765
Any new walkers would be especially welcome, this a lovely area with lots of historical and geological interests, and stunning views from the top of the Crags
MardyBum66 22-07-2007, 17:01 Yes please - I'm coming! Might drag taxman along with me too - don't worry, I'll put him down when I get there! (probably)... Please put two of us down for the buffet.
See you then... :D
Got to add my name to the list for the buffet, oh and to come along on the walk to enjoy one of the best views in Sheffield too! Feargal cousin will be attending also, but prefers to sit and watch the feast:confused:
LinchpinLulu 23-07-2007, 18:31 You've made this sound so good, I've decided to cancel my holidatyto Spain and come along instead.
LinchpinLulu 23-07-2007, 18:31 Only JOKING! :hihi::hihi::hihi:

You do realise that you need to pack a dinghy too, just to get to Dover don't you? And when you get there (Spain) there'll be all that horrible hot weather and not a drop of our lovely rain in sight.
So why bother? Just stay at home, do a boo rah at your unwanted house guests from this side of the channel, and live life to the full with your new mates :)
You know it makes sense.
Just in case anybody's not been on this walk before, there are no toilets or places to obtain refreshments en route. Lots of bushes everywhere though
Ooooh- I'm tempted to bring the daft pooch along to this one. I think it just might be too far though.
I love this diners club :hihi: - I'm in! :D

Too far for who? You or the daft pooch?
For me- I think she'd still be going after a marathon (although she'd probably sleep for a long time afterwards).
canada_girl 24-07-2007, 21:00 I'm Back!
Just flew in the morning and trying to overcome, although so far unsuccessfully, jet lag. Although I hear the weather has cleared up just for me as hubby's said it's been raining all week (?)
Sounds like there's lots of people heading out for this walk on Sunday and a meal for three pounds! Fantastic!
As it happens hubby has been able to get Sunday off so will check with him before committing, but sounds like a brilliant day. (neoteric - I'll let you know for sure if we can make it)
I've done a bit of a copy cat on Neily and got myself some snazzy hikers; the girl version of yours I think!
Albert - I've got that tea for you!
And on another note: are there any plans for a weekend away coming up?

That's OK. Us Canadian girls have learned to adapt. We can go just about anywhere in the great outdoors ;) Always knew all the wilderness camping trips would come in handy. I also know how to scare away bears, raccoons and moose and can light a fire with a bit of flint.:wink:

........and the number of times on Forum walks that I've wished that we'd got someone with us who knew how to wrestle a bear, and now we've got one!.......heavens be praised!
MardyBum66 25-07-2007, 18:09 lol - There's a bear (http://picasaweb.google.com/MardyBum66/UntitledAlbum) resident in the Sheffield Botanical Gardens, if you want to wrestle one! It's quite a cutey, but don't forget to take a big stick with you, just in case! lol :hihi:

Don`t doubt your own capability, this isn't a very hilly walk, just 2 hills, and one of those is in sight of the pub buffet at the end!
Anyway, just look at Rainbow Skys` example last week. Never done a walk before, and totally out of condition (apologies RS) but walked 9.5 miles including climbing Wyming Brook. Go for it Medusa, you might just surprise yourself!

I'm considering that there's lots of paths across the woods so I could start the walk with the group then cut the walk short and rest then get back to the car by a straight route once I've done my bit.
What you have to remember with me is that I have major spinal problems and have days, weeks or sometimes months when I can't even stand without panting from the pain- most of my time at home is spent resting in a recliner.

.
Not a bad idea, there's a point 1/2 way down the hill in the middle of the woods where you can cut across to the top of the Crags without going all the way along the bottom, and across to the end of the Chase as we will be doing.
canada_girl 27-07-2007, 22:36 HIYA
neoteric - if it's not too late hubby and I will eat afterwards with you all!
Just checked the weather and has gone from torrential rain to sunny and 22 degrees. I hope the latter is the most accurate! See you then; looking forward to it. Just hope I can keep up with you all!
8 buffet meals ordered for 4 pm, but 1 of them is spare if anybody else decides to come along!

Pierre12 28-07-2007, 22:08 Hello all
I have just read the thread tonight. i am interested in joining you tomorrow for this short walk.
I do know (:))too how to deal with a bear (brown and black, there is a difference)
hopefully see you tomorrow
Pierre
After due consideration that if I come for this walk I will be missing the Challenge Cup semi final when I get to cheer my team on to the final, I have decided that I need to glue my bum to the sofa instead of being healthy with you lot- sorry.
Another great turn-out, 10 people in total including newbie Pierre who added a gaullic touch to the group, and some great stories of French cuisine! (Please tell me you were kidding about the donkey burgers :o )
Sorry about the pie jokes Neo, don't really think you hide them up there, but the flies seemed to be after something under your cap!
Great buffet once again at the Old Harrow, Matt does a superb job there, I can highly recommend the pub to anyone who's in the area.
Last of all, it was nice to see some sunshine, even if it wasn't red hot, it was more than bearable for walking in.
neoteric 29-07-2007, 17:25 Yes another great day out walking with a great group of people - finished off with a welcome pint and a buffet at the Old Harrow. But next time can't we go for the Childrens Party menu and have a Bouncy Castle please:)
Thanks for the lift back Neily and hope your camera is OK Pierre12

Look forward to seeing everyone next week at Castleton.
A fine sunny day and a lovely walk with great views from the crags!
Galloway 30-07-2007, 18:38 Wow! Another fab, fun day out & walk with stunning views - am I glad we found you Guys & Gals................!
Thanks to all of you from "Me & Him"!
Anyone wanting pocket binoculars - Spec: 10 x 25 - Morrisons have them on offer at unbelievable £3.99p in petrol stations.
I know they have them at Meadowhead but unsure about the other Stores.
From what I can see (a pun there eh?) they are every bit as good as mine, of same spec., which cost me £60.
I'm told the offer ends on Sunday.

Top tip off Galloway - just been up to Meadowhead and bought me a pair - now I will be able to see what the neighbors are doing :hihi:

As one of your neighbours, I hope you won't be pointing them in my direction:nono::)
canada_girl 31-07-2007, 12:23 Beautiful trail and and gorgeous weather. And well earned food at the end. Equals a fabulous day. Was completey exhausted when I got home and feel asleep on the sofa! Thanks all!
MardyBum66 31-07-2007, 13:45 It was a great walk, yes, and great to see some sunshine again, for a change. It was a good idea to finish with tea at the pub - very convivial!
Hey, neoteric! I didn't notice you sneaking that photo of me climbing the tree! :o lol Your photos are great as usual. I'm glad we managed to sneak a short diversion by the dragon's den too - it was nice down there, being able to look up at those amazing rocks from below. There are certainly some good rocks and trees to climb on, on that walk. I don't know where I get all my energy from, especially considering the distance taxman and I walked the previous day! I'm not sure Tiznit enjoyed running as much as I did - he seemed to want to stay with you, Galloway. :)
As usual, my photos will follow eventually... :D
