I have just bought a Canon 400D digital SLR camera and know little about it apart from reading the book.supplied.
When I switch it on I get the display page on the LCD screen but if I take this off I get a blank screen with the words No Image.
Is this normal or should I be able to see a view on the screen before I take a picture?
Am I pressing the wrong buttons, set it up wrong or is there a fault on the camera.
I would appreciate any advice from someone to put me right, it may be my stupidity that is the fault and you cannot see a view on the screen only through the viewfinder.

I've got a Nikon and when it says "no image " it means there are no images stored on the card.
You will only get an image on the screen at start up if you have taken pics and they have been stored and/or you haven't deleted them.

That's usually the case on most dSLRs - the image is bounced off a mirror into viewfinder for you to compose the shot, then when you press shutter button the mirror flips up, allows the light to each the sensor which captures the image. There are some dSLRs now with live view mode for example the Canon 1D III (makes it easier for the paparazzi to get shots with camera held over head etc)
You can learn more of your camera (http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/canoneos400d/) here by the way :)

Thanks so much for the info, I was worried that I had a fault on the camera and would have to return it to the internet seller.
I did have at the back of my mind that to have a LCD screen view was in competition as it were with the idea of a SLR camera.
I'm satisfied now that this old man's stupidity has been revealed again but also an happy old man.
You were great, thanks a million.
Happy days! PopT
