The kitten I have is 6 weeks old and is underweight. Due to being a stray he has worms which we have sorted with a pouch of worming powder from the vet. I didn't think he had fleas at first but we have looked and he is basically infested I think. He is covered in their white eggs, so much so that it looks like bad dandruff and you can see them running on him. Some are black and some appear to be browny/orange.

The pet shops don't seem to have any flea treatments for kittens under 12 weeks old and obviously we can't just leave them til he is old enough. We found some tablets you can use on 4 weeks plus but they have to weigh a minimum of 1kg and he only weights 700g. We were thinking we could cut on of these in half?

Does anyone know of anything suitable?

Either VET
or use a fine comb and comb them out.
If you comb everyday for a week you'll kill them all.
You can also bathe in warm water.
But he's two young for most flea treatments

Frontline spray is suitable from 2 days old, you would need to check the spot on as this is a measured dose. You can only buy Frontline spot on online, Frontline spray has to come from the vet.

If you buy any sort of flea killing product (Frontline spray or pet shop flea powder for instance) and treat your flea comb, then you can comb the fleas out and comb them into a little pool of your flea killer on the table or whatever you have the kitten on to make sure that they die rather than just live in your home.

Make no mistake about this- fleas kill small kittens, purely because there isn't much blood in a kitten and they can't replace the red blood cells fast enough to remain healthy. We have had kittens die in front of us at the Shelter from anaemia brought on just by flea loading.

You can't kill every flea on a kitten until they're a bit older and stronger- but you CAN reduce the numbers enough for them to grow and be healthy, then treat them with something like Stronghold or Advocate from about 12 weeks (I think- please check this with your vet). The advantage of these products is:

1 They're spot ons, so there's little stress in application

2 They do kitten versions so you can be sure that you aren't overdosing the little ones

3 They also kill one of the other things that kittens seem to suffer from pretty dreadfully- ear mites.
