View Full Version : Meersbrook/Heeley a no-go area for pizza delivery

We ordered a pizza the other night from Pizza Hut - I'll use their name because on this occassion I haven't got anything bad to say about them:P . It was a week night, so not too busy, they said the usual half-hour, etc.
An hour later, no pizza.

I phoned them, all ready to row and argue, only for the guy on the other end of the phone to groan piteously and explain that they only had one car on the road. And your bikes? I thought, all ready to start again...until he explained that due to 4 muggings of their bike delivery people in the last month in Heeley and Meersbrook, they no longer send bikes on delivery in our area.

The particular roads in concern are Valley, Carrfield, and apparently the whole of Heeley. But both areas are entirely no-go zones now!

LOL, move over Manor, the mean streets of Meersbrook are taking over...:suspect:

We know who's causing the trouble, it's kids on the streets. The majority of them are just socialising with their friends, and with the cuts in the youth service, there's nowhere else to do it, but a rather more hard-core group are starting to make our area a no-go zone.

During the summer hols, when the police were picking the kids up and taking them home when they got too rowdy, it actually did make a difference. Pity that's too intensive to do all year round, really.

Cosy:confused:

PS. Got a load of vouchers well over the worth of what we ordered...so not too many complaints there.

Well instead of using Pizza-Hut, phone Domino's...
Their delivery zone stretches from Dronfield to Totley Moor and the ODD numbers on Abbeydale Road.

They only have ONE scooter, all the other drivers have cars.

They will deliver to Meersbrook; I always get a ride back home with one of the drivers when they have an order there.

Weekends is probably a no-no with Domino's beeing well overworked, but week days (after 17:00) you'll be okay.

Ummm....I was trying very hard not to mention any company names in regard to poor service, and I know they're all of a muchness. Usually I use a small local place (Milan's) which is thousands of miles better and cheaper than either of the big two...but sometimes you just need that mass-made taste, lol.
But I have NEVER EVER been impressed by Dominos. Which is the nicest way I can put it...

I'm less concerned with the pizza delivery, more concerned that an area better known for being a home to flighty green types with families and a burning desire to save the earth (lol) is supposedly becoming the next 'bad'area in Sheffield.

Oh my god, think of the effects on our house prices! The schools will go downhill next!:o :P :P

Alternative theory: maybe it's not the area, but the job...
Maybe it's just pizza deliverers in general...maybe they are becoming a target due to the number of cold pizzas and warm ice cream they've been sticking us with over the years...:D

That would mean my house price was safe and my children won't be labelled yobs for living in a 'difficult' area:D.

i used to live in broomhall and takeaways would not touch us unless we told them that we would be there to meet them and shut the big cast iron gates once they got onto the driveway.

I've never had any problems when living in meersbrook with delivery apart from kids breaking into cars most nights( it is kids too as I have seen them at it but it takes me that long to get down three flghts of stairs from my flat to get them that they have started to run off down the hill). the police have now actually started to bother to put slips through the doors asking people if they have seen anything!

It has gone a bit quieter just lately so maybe they are fed up of breaking into cars/ smashing the wing mirrors and have decided that mugging people is more fun now.

meersbrook was really quiet when I moved here three years ago but the last year has been a nightmare with the cars.We have had three different cars and all have been broken into damaging the locks and three wing mirrors smashed , and nothing has ever been stolen out of them.

I thought Meersbrook was an area where there is a curfew in place so the kids aren't allowed to be out roaming the streets. The story about the pizza delivery guys getting mugged is something I've heard from another source so I can fully understand the reluctance of any pizza delivery guy coming to the area, can't be very pleasant to be threatened and then have your bike stolen by a group of juvenile delinquents.

I've got to admitt I never see kids hanging around were I am they just seem to be passing through. Seen a few hang around the park area/ valley road but don't seeem to be doing much harm, but then again i don't live there! ( nimby!!)

I always thought the trouble with the cars started when one of the pubs nearby appeared to suddenly have an influx of 'young people' playing on the pools tables and sitting outside in the beer garden over the summer. They seem to have sorted that over the last six months maybe there is a link with the pub and the amount of vandalism on the cars, as it has got a lot quieter since?

I moved to Valley Road near the shop this summer, and I've seen kids hanging around but no trouble really.. hope it stays that way too ;-)

Perhaps the kiddies should be prevented from smoking such high-quality weed. In my youth the munchies could be allayed by a swift nosh on a Mars bar purchased from the local all-night garage. But if the poor things are getting so hungry they're going feral and mugging Pizza Hut bikers then they must be on some proper spiky ganja. Mind you, they shut the garage on Chesterfield Road near Derbyshire Lane recently. Could this be connected with the spooky rise in pizza robbery around Meersbrook?

I went to view a property on Rushdale Road recently and at the corner where Valley meets Rushdale were a bunch of thugs, at the time throwing snowballs at cars.
Now essentially this is harmless, if it's only snow - which it wasn't.
Furthermore, when I pulled over my car to check for scratches etc they were shouting abuse and gesticulating at me, despite the fact I hadn't said a word. There was a small crack in the windshield but I can't swear it wasn't there before so what could I do?
The teacher in me wanted to go over and scream at them (before battering them for being so vile) but I drove away.
The house was nice but I don't want to live in an area like that so we didn't put an offer in.
Meersbrook has had a wonderful reputation over the years, the house prices reflect it's previous reputation and it's a shame it won't stay like that.
There was a shooting at the old corner shop some years ago too, not so nice.

I grew up on valley road but moved upto woodseats about 12 years ago. A friend of mine who's parents lived just up from the shops at the top moved the for sole purpose of the kids hanging around and causing trouble. They didnt feel like they could just nip to the shops and back without getting some kind of abuse. They even knocked on the door of one particular person one night and beat them up!

I think there should be a curfew every night!

Thats ridiculous! i live on Rushdale road and it's fine. People warned us about the 'gangs' who hang out outside the shop, said we shouldn't move here because of them. Well i've never seen any trouble, the kids i've spoken to are nice, they're just bored. There's nothing for them to do. I feel safe walking to the shop or the gym in the dark, mostly the kids ignore you, but some say hello and that's it. It's people who don't live in the area who start silly rumours!

The problem is that they don't don't literally steal food from the drivers, is that they make phoney calls for pizza delivery.

They are quite brave and will leave their real numbers when they order (probably a stolen phone).

They make orders, wait for the food and threaten the driver and don't pay.
There have been occasions when they throw stones at scooter and car drivers.

I live on Valley Road, and although the kids up the road don't pose a threat they do stress me out, doing nothing all evening but playing with stick, hanging around Steve's Convenient shop. It's not that they are dangerous, it' smore that they are a nuisance, just by their continuous presence, doing nothing but staring at you...

I now don't go to the convinience shop and just go to tesco's in Woodseats or Swiggy's. I don't like the look on their face when I'm getting my bog roll :suspect: SPIES !

My colleagues at Domino's (I had to come out ith it at some point didn't I) don't really like delivering there, but as a policy we won't take first time mobile phone orders.

also the long delivery times are not dure to the location but to the overwelming number of orders. We have 10 drivers on **** during the weekends and that's prety much all the store can afford.
I don't know about Pizza hut's delivery, although they are closer to mine than Domino's but we regularly have large oprders form AbbeyBar, which is literaly PH's neighbour, so I guess we can't be that bad or they would have walked the 10m seperating them from the PH store :)

Lets put a happy face on, working at half 5 tonight ;)

I'm a bit confused, what areas do people count as "Heeley" ?

I thought I lived in Heeley (near the Olive Grove pub) but someone told me at the weekend that isn't Heeley.

Ah the scrotes round the shop.
If they want to hang round there so much i think they should do it every night.....In the stocks.

Let me throw a kebab at them and give em a quick slap on me way back from the pub on a weekend.

I use Pinocchios on London Road and they always deliver quickly (their food is quite cheap and very scrummy - recommended!)

I had a couple of friends down south who owned their own Pizza shop... Mrs N ran the shop whilst Mr A did the pizza deliveries...

One evening an order came through... Mr A went on his rounds to deliver the big order of pizza's along with extra's only to find it was a hoax but this didnt come to light until Mr A rang the door bell an was robbed of the food order along with his cash bag...

Unfortunately Mr A couldnt really do alot about the order as he was out numbered... Although he did report it an so happens their pizza shop isnt the only place that had be picked on...

Delivering can be a scary job as you never know who or what is hiding behind the front door! :?

How can your Domino's deliver in 5 minutes ? The oven (at 230°) cooks the pizzas in 7 minutes, add a minute to slap it and top it and 1 minute to box (if you were lucky to be fair coz your pizza is never the only one in the system) how can you get it 5 minutes ?

Well, not 5 minuites, but it was pretty quick. Don't forget, Psalter and Dominoes aren't that far away.

I live at Meersbrook( soon to move to Crookes) and I have not had any trouble at all.
I know that there are a few kids hanging around at the end of Rusdale Rd near the shops and it is just mainly because they have nothing to do.

Where are the youth clubs, where can they go?
They cant all gang up in 1 house as usually parentsp put a limit on numbers..
They cant afford to go to the pictures and they are not allowed to go to pubs if they are under 18.
There is absoloutely nothing here for teenagers to do.
I have 1 myself and all he does is cause a nuisance to us or spend all his days watching TV/playing on the computer/internet or going to his friends house and doing the same there.
He occasionally goes to The Edge, the climbing wall near CCC, and that is a great activity but some kids dont have the money to do that .
The community is usually the first to point the finger at youths when they are hanging around causing a nuisance but never stop to wonder why they are there and what can be done about it.

Just adding my 2p's worth.. I live on the Heeley / Meersbrook border and we've had zero problems with delivery from Domino's [woodseats]

Miles better pizza's anyway so I say give Pizza Hut the boot!

(though disturbing to hear the news re: "no-go areas.." :-/ )

At the risk of becoming a pizza thread, lol, I have never had a decent pizza from Woodseats Dominos...the last one was undercooked...and that new double cheese thing??? Eughh!!! I lifted up the top pizza because I couldn't see the second layer of yummy cheese you see in the advert...and that's because there was none! Just a thin layer of what could only broadly be referred to as a runny, unpleasant cheese sauce. Ick!! BLATANT false advertising.

As for the problem with kids, we have had to call the police on them twice in the last 3 weeks. Because we know firsthand the problems with the youth service and the horrendous lack of youth provision, we're all pretty patient around here. They like to sit at the top of our road, have a laugh and get drunk. Fine. Not a problem. But there's a contingent that comes up and are rowdy, obnoxious, and are terrorising the people in the top few houses by throwing rocks at their windows, climbing on their garage, and rattling their doors to get in. There can be anywhere from 6 to (honestly, I counted, lol) 50 up there. We're campaigning for better provision, places to go, things to do...but at the same time the street has to come out and make it clear we won't tolerate being turned into a no-go zone. It seems to be working, but it's only moving them on to the next place.
Who's to blame? Sheffield Futures, Connexions, and the Council for letting an incapable private company take on something they so clearly couldn't handle. It makes me steam...

Ooh - I'll stick with Domino's I think ... but having said that I'm with you 101% on the "double crust" scheme - OTT by the looks of it for sure (worst idea since Pizza Hut's sickly "Stuffed Crusts" yuck!)

Perhaps we should wrap this one up there (Calzone style)

... or I guess we could always start up http://www.sheffieldpizzasforum.co.uk

Many many years back I took a part time job with Pizza Hut delivering pizzas at night for extra cash and got sent to the store in Dronfield to cover there for a few weeks (now gone and replaced with a chippy).

The store in Dronfield covered parts of Sheffield such as Meadowhead, Jordanthorpe etc. for a while, but then we stopped delivering to Jordanthorpe and parts of Meadowhead because of the violence towards the staff.

On one occasion I had what looked to be a hammer thrown at me while riding thrown Jordanthorpe and on many occasions you'd get stones thrown at you ambush style while heading towards meadowhead from Dronfield.

The funny thing was the amount of people that would kick off on the phone when they finally stopped delivering there, do these people not realise that you don't bite the hand that feeds??:hihi:

The only arse was that you had to go the long way round when delivering to the friendlier parts of the area, such as Norton (or what ever it's called around the water tower and Greaves park) to avoid people calling up complaining that we passed near them and didn't deliver to their area if they saw you.

I left shortly after anyway and then the place shut down a little later.

One common thing that used to happen to my mate at Ecclesall Dominos (before the Woodseats one was around and back when it was owned by a franchise hold before the corporation bought it out) was people ordering two fake orders on the same road, normally where the house had the passages and you deliver round the back, and while the driver was dropping one order at one door (but being told it wasn't something they'd ordered) the people who'd called the order would steal the pizza from the moped's back box (plus coke & ice cream etc.) and leg it.

This happened quite often in similar areas but on different roads and often meant the people doing it getting a few large pizzas, ice cream and soft drinks for their crimes.:D

So if the person who did it or was involved in it is reading this, at least you amused me (but not the staff at Dominos)

I'd say that even colleagues find it quite bitter and filling, they can't eat a whole Double Decadance.
but it's been agree by us at work that to enjoy a DD, you must let it cool down, if you have the pizza piping as it should be when you receive the cheese won't taste very nice. Eat it warm ;). I do when we have mismakes and it's well nice when it's cooled down.
