This little lady wandered onto our yard at the weekend and she is a sweetie. She was scruffy, starving and full of fleas and had a flea allergy.

She is currently on 4 meals a day to build her up and is anemic, we noticed the tumor on her belly, sadly it is inoperable, she also has another couple of lumps and the cancer has spread to her lymphatic system. She has been frontlined, wormed and groomed to sort out her mats, she has now finally stopped scratching.

We can only think that she has been dumped, her temperament is fantastic and she happily potters around the yard with the horses and other two doggie residents. I have enclosed some pics after her bath.

Unfortunately we dont think the little girl will be with us forever but we are going to make sure she has a pain free life until the time comes. Our yard owner has named her Scruffy, she seems to answer to that anyway :P

Sheffield Dog Rescue are helping with the vets bills so we are going to do some fundraising, so watch this space for events ;)

Heres Scruffy:

She is so very special, we have all fell in love with her, she is a happy dog considering. She just wandered in the gate Sunday lunchtime I think she could smell lunch :hihi:

She is staying with our yard owner, so all credit to her really, not me. but she would have come home with one of us, we couldnt part with her now.

We think she is only a young dog, around 3years at the most.

Oh poor Scruffy, such sad eyes her pictures made me cry, how can anyone allow her to be in such a state, thank god they decided to dump her at least she will be made comfortable now.
The pic of the tumour is horrible thats what Lucy looked like when we got her, she is lucky hers has been removed, if Scruffy is a young dog she is very unlucky poor thing, i hope anyone who can't be bothered to spay their bitch see's this and the shocking picture of her cancer, because it could so easily be their dog next!

Can't you give her a nicer name? She deserves a glamorous name to make up a little bit for all her sad life.

I'd call her Florence if she was mine. Then she could be Flo, Flossie-Wossie-Possie, Floozie-Woozie, Floozums Honey BonBon, Florrie Darling Baby Dog ...

Not many people have heard of our village Gwyneth :o Fallen she has a flea allergy. The fur may grow back it depends how long she has had the problem, but she is comfortable now the fleas have all gone, it was like a circus.

I know CV thankyou for your offer, if there was anything we could do, believe me we would. Sheff Dog rescue have already said they would pay, so money isnt the issue as we could fund raise it back, but she is too far gone. We could go down the chemo road if we thought she had a chance, but to put her through that would be cruel, considering her condition.

All we can do is make sure she is pain free, comfortable, happy and well fed. SDR have already paid the bills so far as she is on quite a bit of medication but we are going to do some fundraising for SDR as its the least we can do.

Scruffy went to the vets for her check up today and they have decided once she is up to weight they will operate and send off the lump for biopsy. They initially said that this wasnt an option but she saw a different vet today, so fingers crossed.

We are organising a Treasure Hunt for the 19th August (Sunday) if anyone can attend to raise funds for Scruffys treatment.

I will keep you updated on Scruffys progress.

what a beauty she is... and so sad for her to be so ill at such a relatively young age. Please give her lots of scruffles from me, and a good old "Scritch" behind her ear.

I have to be careful with my boy, cos he gets FAD (Flea Allergy Dermatitis), but he is also allergic to grass (when it's overgrown!) which is fun!

We found a lump (A lipoma) on his ribs about a year ago, and the vet said, on account of his age, (he's 14 soon!) that we just needed to keep an eye on him, that the lump was not geting any bigger, and that it wasn't causing him pain.

However, as soon as the lump was discovered, whoosh! He was off to the doggy docs straightaway. I could not have left him to get into the condition the original owners of scruffy left her to get into. Makes me so angry, and makes me want to cry.

Just an update Scruffy had the large tumor removed yesterday and seems happier, basically the decision to have it removed was to make her more comfortable, as we know the cancer is in her Lymph nodes so cannot be cured.

We will hopefully see a new side to her now.

Fundraising events as follows:

Treasure hunt is £5.00 per car starting at Hatfeild Arms, Laughton en le Morthen at 2.00PM on 9th September 2007.

Garage sale at Fairview, Laughton en le Morthen Sunday 26th August starts at 11.00am

Pm for directions if needed.

Scruffy has been renamed Sophie and she is now living with my sister and is loving life, she has spent lots of time with my three dogs (sis is just down the road) and she is having a party. She has put on weight and her coat has almost all grown back now. I have just spent a week in Ireland, so she has lived with my three at my sisters and she is sooooo happy. I will ask my sis to post some recent pics, she particularly loves the school field as she has a wide open space in which to bomb around with my three.

She has had her stitches removed before I went on holiday and she is doing well, she has been booked to see our vet as she previously saw a local vet, so I will update more when we have had a second opinion.

Be great to see anyone at the treasure hunt tommorow (Sun 2.00pm, Hatfeild Arms, Laughton en le Morthen (near Dinnington).

Story so far:

We have found out she has Spondylosis, which is advanced and affects most of her vertebre and all of her tail, which would explain why she is reluctant to climb stairs:(

The vets have decided that she is a lot older than first thought, so it was decided not to spey her unless it became necessary to put her under anesthetic for the lumps.

Latest news, the little bugger has decided to have a fanthom pregnancy. My sis phoned me in a panic, as poor Sophie was so distressed, panting, nesting, using a squeeky as a baby and she was pacing and crying constantly, so she was back to the vet for some Gallstop, she has been on this for a week now and her milk has finally dried up enough to have her speyed.

Sophie came home from her Spey today and is doing well, they did remove one lump from her leg, but the anesthetic was too risky to remove anymore.

She is currently snoozing bless her and is still refusing the odd bit of chicken, no doubt she will eat some when she is up to it.

Just thought I would update you all on her progress, she is causing my sister some worry I can tell ya.:o

Hi Gemima, With her spondylosis and other probs have the vets said what her life expectancy is? She is so lucky to have people that love her! Thanks for the food aswell by the way! x

aww she's doing amazing - I'm so glad to hear she got through her op OK. What a lucky old lady she was to walk into a place where she would be loved!

Gemima
17-01-2008, 21:52
No probs TB :hihi:, we dont know what her life expectancy is as the vet and ourselves are guessing at it really. All we can do is make sure she has a good life whilst she is here.

She is a real comic and is no trouble at all.

ahh i remember when you first posted about her wandering into the yard. So glad she has someone to love and look after her, just such a shame she has all these health worries but at least she has experienced love and a nice place to be and has all the things every dog deserves. Good luck little girl hope you start feeling better x

I'd forgotten you asked for some recent photos Mima!

She's usually got her nose to the ground and loves going new places with new smells. At first, we rarely got anywhere as she had to stop and sniff everything but she's used to go for walks now and doesn't have to investigate quite so much.

http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c250/Letsbeavenue/Chilling.jpg

To be honest, she is a complete mystery! Sometimes she seems young but all her ailments suggest she is an old dog. It doesn't matter to me, she has a warm home, good food and is loved lots. One thing is for sure - she's a resilient old boot! :)

The phantom pregnancy was awful for her and I'm glad she is spayed now. She is much brighter this morning and had some chicken for breakfast.

OMG she is gorg and looks amazing compared to the before pics you have done such a good job.
I know what you mean about the sniffing. we have an old girl and when we got her she hadn't really got much experience of the outside world. Well our first walks took forever due to the sniffing :hihi: we call her the gossip now and say when she is sniffing she is just having a gossip with al the local dogs

That last pic of her reminds me of our Albert i think it must be her hair and her mouth although he doesn't really look all that like her. she is just my kind of dog

LOL at The Gossip! Oh Albert is lovely! I guess they have similar coats don't they?

Sophie is generally kept shorter than in those photos (helps having a groomer in the family ;)) because she spends a lot of time at the yard with me and gets filthy. I like her to keep her eyebrows though - it makes her look intelligent (which she isn't). :hihi:

She wears one of Anna's greyhound coats usually and it's always in the wash. I really must get her a spare as they're so lightweight but warm.

Thanks for the lovely comments everyone.

Adz
18-01-2008, 13:05
Your groomer is also my groomer :hihi: lol which is why Alby has shorter hair in that pic. Their coats do look similar. Know what you mean about the brows OH has told me we cannot have em chopped short or the hair on top of his head otherwise he doesn't have spikes and that intelligent look lol.

Have you managed to get one of the harnesses like the one i gave Gemima, she said you were rather taken with it :) they are brill.

Fishpole
18-01-2008, 13:30
No I haven't ordered one yet as she has her coat on most of the time but she will need one when the weather is better. I've got the link though so thanks and the one you gave Gemima fitted Feebs perfectly!

Now that we're gradually sorting Sophie's problems out, I'm hoping we'll be able to get out and about come Spring and she has to look her best in a bobby dazzler harness, doesn't she? :D

Does Albert mix well with other dogs? I can feel a beach trip needs organising. :)

Sophie has been here with me and mine all day today and she is so much better, she appears to have a new lease of life since her spay and we think she must feel tons better, as she has started to want to play a bit now. She is troughing like there is no tommorow and I actually caught her stealing a sandwich.:o

Basil the old grump has decided that Sophies play advances are unwelcome, he will only play on his terms, so he has done a bit of grumbling.

She's a fabulous, friendly dog without an ounce of malice and is, in my opinion, an ambassador for all the dogs who might usually be written off as costly, old, unwanted etc.

Since she walked onto the yard last July, she has just thrived and that is down to her zest for life, rather than anything we can do for her. She's a fighter.

I wish there had never been any need for her to have endured what she has and I'm fairly convinced now that she has been loved by someone, but love is all so often just not enough! Proper "care" would have prevented suffering.
