There are some good online tutorials about (I'll dig one up for you later today if you like) but one thing that helped me out was realising that the stitches won't jump off the needle unless they're pushed, as long as your needles and yarn aren't too slippery. That means you only have to think about two needles at any time - the two working ones. The rest can just wait until you're ready for them. medusa 19-07-2007, 10:29 The first few rows on DPNs do always feel a bit uncomfortable and clumsy- but do persevere because it gets much easier. Lucy-Lastic 19-07-2007, 11:53 If you dont get on with DPNS you could try the magic loop (just using 1 long circular) or two circulars. As has already been said though if you can get past the first few rows you should be fine:D Good luck! maramcp 23-07-2007, 16:45 Have seen a pattern on www.knitty.com for socks knitted with two needles (waiting for sock knitters sharp intake of breath and shaking of head) but maybe that would be somewhere to start? The pattern is called Socks with 2 Sticks, devised by someone who could not cope with more than two needles! Have a look, it may be worth a go, and there are plenty of other patterns for socks in their pattern archives too... Even I know you NEED 4 needles for socks - no seams you see (tut ) It's best you stay clear maramcp - these things are best left alone;) Hecate 23-07-2007, 18:09 It's always a struggle when you first start knitting on DPNs. The first few rows are especially difficult, as there's not enough fabric knitted to hold the needles steady. Once you get a centimetre or two knit up, you'll find it much easier, as the needles tend to stay where you put them due to the support of what you've already knitted. When I first started, I knit in bed with a couple of pillows on my knee. The cushions supported the knitting, and let me rest the needles on them so they didn't fly all over the place so much. It also boosted it up so I could see better what I was doing. Bamboo needles are good, as they're light and have a bit of grip which means the stitches are less likely to slip off them. There's my old tutorial here (http://www.sheffieldforum.co.uk/showthread.php?t=99738) (if you look at it, let me know if any of the links don't work). I'd really recommend getting someone to show you in person though. I taught myself from the internet, but I'm sure it would have been much quicker to have had someone show me. You could try the knitting group meeting (http://www.sheffieldforum.co.uk/showthread.php?t=231019) on the 25th at the Wool Baa, or there's Bami's Saturday meeting (details here (http://asa4u.net/knitnchat/index.html)). Good luck :) . EDIT: There's also a video about knitting with DPNs on this (http://www.knittinghelp.com/knitting/advanced_techniques/) page. maramcp 23-07-2007, 18:10 Okay, Wheezy! I am trying very hard to stay away from the socks... knitbird 23-07-2007, 18:20 I made the sox on 2 stix, but the short row shaping is a bit of a pain. That said my next pair of socks are short row heel and toe jobbies, so it can't have out me off that much! Come along to Jill's on the 25th and we can all show you how to knit socks in the round- except Wheezy, who's just difficult. ;) Wheezy 23-07-2007, 18:57 I made the sox on 2 stix, but the short row shaping is a bit of a pain.
