thenewborn 14-12-2004, 18:58 i was born here, but my parents are geordies, i was concieved in luxor egypt, lived in Deal, South Africa and Egypt, but had the house in sheffield all the time so never really moved.
brownieblade 14-12-2004, 19:03 I was born in Sheffield but bred in Yeovil, Somerset before my parents moved up here just before i was born.
My mother is born and bred (Shiregreen lass) but my old man was a Cockney who lived in Sheffield for nearly 30 years before he passed away, he was in the end an adopted Sheffielder and loved living in the city.

FairyNormal 14-12-2004, 21:45 Born and bred I am !!
Born in Jessops Hospital.
Lived on Granville Road, then Hillsborough, Then in my late teens I dossed about quite a bit (bed sits etc) at Highfields, Parson Cross and Firth Park. Then 8 years on Kelvin, 18 months at Wisewood and finally back to Hillsborough!!
Wouldn't want to live anywhere else!!
DannyBoy 14-12-2004, 21:53 Adopted - originally a "southerner" - but I've lived here for 12 years, which is longer (continuously) than I've lived anywhere else in the UK! Sheffield's the nicest city I've ever lived in.
WallBuilder 14-12-2004, 22:03 My accent still throws people and I've lived in Sheffield for most of my life, however was actually born in ROYAL Leamington Spa [Don't forget the Royal]. My parents are both southerners from near Epsom so my accent has been affected by their accent and an older brother and sister who have a midlands accent. I tend to get told off by Yorkshire folk if I try to incorporate Thee's and thou's into my speech as it sounds wrong.
I was born in Oldham and moved here to come to University - and I've been here ever since!

Sheffielder - Frecheville, Meersbrook. Support United AND Wednesday - not sure it's allowed but there you go.
Swan_Vesta 15-12-2004, 07:44 I'm an adopted Sheffielder, originally from Bedfordshire but I'll not be leaving Sheffield in a hurry as it's ace.
Better class of people, friendly atmosphere, excellent nightlife & an all round good place to live.
Sheffield born & bred born on arbourthorne & my parents moved to Foster Road at Heeley when I was 6 months old.
Came here as a student in '89. Lived in Highfield, moved to Gleedless. Moved to Peterborough. Moved back here nearly four years ago now.
The pubs are better here
Born across the Pennines in Hyde (of Dr Shipman fame) and lived there for 30 years. Lived in Penistone for 10 years and Lodge Moor for 1 year (next week). Married a Sheffield girl and that's what brought me here. No regrets .....
Captain_Scarlet 15-12-2004, 09:09 I am son of Sheffielder, born and bred abroad, but I'm back in the promise land.
In sheffield, I've lived in Totley, Dore, Highfield and Meersbrook; all of witch are great places to live in where there is a strong sence of community (despite what some say).
I love it here and although I'll have to leave for studies, I intend on living here thereafter.
I'm a born and bred Sheffielder born in Chapeltown lived in High Green, Gleadless, Lower Shiregreen, Firth Park and now Wincobank.

Born in Sheffield (Jessop Hosp) - lived Walkley, Malin Bridge, Darnall, Handsworth - been in Midlands since early 1970s but Sheffield is still home. When asked where I come from, have always said I live in ********* but I'm from Sheffield and I still do that, even after all this time. Still have my accent, unmistakeable to those who know Sheffield - I love it when a total stranger says to me You're from Sheffield, aren't you? - happened only a few weeks ago in a shop in Birmingham - does anyone else who's moved away find this happens to them?

It's quite common for people to tell me I have a Leeds/Bradford accent. Can't seem to shake it off even though I have lived here since 1981

Longshanks 15-12-2004, 11:37 I'm adopted, came in 89 as a student and never went back to .... Essex  Yes I'm an Essex girl but fortunately have lost the accent. Also spent a year living in France.
Yes I'm an Essex girl It's scary how embarrassed we get about it :help:
I was born & bred in Essex ( I am NOT going to cringe now!) & have lived in Leicestershire, Devon & North Yorks. I moved to Sheffield 2 years ago - I've decided it's my spiritual home. I'm sure I was meant to be born here & not in Essex :P
I was born in sheffield, lived here till I was about 6 them moved to gateshead, houghton-le-spring , congleton in cheshire and salford in manchester then when I was nine I moved back to sheffield.
I must say that where ever I was I allways bitterly missed my home town and was really glad to be back (my parents divorced and my mom took to running pubs ) theres just nowhere like sheffield where you can just drive for a while and hit the countryside
gillmarx 15-12-2004, 12:45 born and bred in sheffield, manor for 21 years then norfolk park, stannington, southey green then back to norfolk park for the last 20 years
Born Sarf Landan then moved with parents to Portsmouth, Nottingham and then Sheffield when I was 3 years old.
So, formative years spent in Sheffield until 18 when i moved to Carlisle for a couple of years, then back to Sheffield and in 1999 back down to London.
Can't wait to get back home though. I think moving around the UK has made me appreciate Sheffield more.

Adopted Sheffielder...
Born in Liverpool, grew up in rural lancashire moving to Sheffield when I was doing my A levels. Returned to Sheffield after Uni before wandering the country working in a variety of locales.
As soon as I got my current job which allowed me to live where ever I wished I moved back to Sheffield.
Top City.
I was born in Preston, and brought up in Blackpool. Lived in Sheffield for two years :razz:

Lived here for over 30 years. Originally a Cestrian.
Sheffielder born and bred! Born in Nether Edge hospital, and lived in the Highfield area for 34 years.:)
Plain Talker 15-12-2004, 20:07 I was born in the Nether Edge hospital, (whispers) forty years ago.
i was brought up on Gleadless Valley (on't' valley) and moved to Highfields/ Sharrow aged 10, and, when the old housing was cleared, five or six years later, I moved with my parents to Arbourthorne.
I left home at age eighteen, and became the "family gypsy", as my dad has christened me.
I have lived all over the city, I have moved, over the last twenty-odd on average every eighteen months. however I am settled where I am, now, and my intention is to stay here until I am carried out, feet first, in a box!
I lived for a short time in Northamptonshire, and for an even shorter time in Nottingham, and could not wait to come back to Sheffield. I missed Sheffield so much.
I love sheffield and do not want to live anywhere else.
it is a lovely, friendly place, (there are not many places safer!) We have the two prstigious and popular universities withing our city... it's a nice, green city, with all its parkland; we have the splendour of the peak district on our doorstep; what more could we ask?
PT
I've lived all over - born in Scotland and lived in Cumbernauld till I was 10, then lived in Slough, then Newcastle before coming to Sheffield University. Fell in love with the place, and decided to stay. First place I'd actually *chosen* to live.

segasonic 17-12-2004, 01:14 Born in Colchester (Essex lad), and lived in Jaywick (Clacton-on-Sea) then King's Lynn (Norfolk) til I was four or so...
Been in Sheffield for 24 years now, Darnall, Hyde Park, Fir Vale, Lower Manor, Gleadless Valley, Parson Cross, Walkley and currently Wadsley Bridge.
I consider myself a Sheffielder through and through, and no-one would know I originated from daahn saaaf unless I told them. :)
I love Sheffield, occasionally get ****** off with it all, but then the grass is always greener as they say. I'm truly proud to see the way that the city centre is being regenerated, proud to be a Blade, and proud to have been adopted by the best city in the country. I've been to many other cities on my travels, and the places and people in them don't even come close to my beloved home.

Strange how all the adopted Sheffielders seem to be from Essex. I grew up in Southend but have lived here since 1976 and both my kids were born here. I still hanker after flat landscapes and muddy estuaries <sigh>

Born in Brightside, moved to Tinsley, Abbeydale, and Greenhill.
A steady step toward Derbyshire until half of that county became Sheffield. Long in America, Sheffield was always the right place to be born. My son Mark always thought himself a sheff, but was born in Cornwall
Martin_s 19-12-2004, 13:53 *joins those up against the wall waiting to be shot*..
Kentish born... although you wouldn't know it to hear me speak...
Lived down there till I was 18 then headed to Canada a couple of times, before settling briefly in Reading, the on to London for 6 years of varied accomodation and tube hell.. then finally hit Sheffield for Uni 6 years back and since lived in Lower Walkley, Hillsborough, Broomhill, and Gleadless before returning to Hillsborough...
Don't expect to see me leaving anytime soon... :)
I'm originally from Wakefield (*shudder*) so I'm not from far away, but I came to Sheffield (to uni) just over four years ago, and I've loved it since I was first here. I lived down Abbeydale Road for three years, but now reside in Broomhall. It's nice here, but I do feel a special affinity for the more southern parts of Sheffield *grin*. Even though I'm from only 30 miles north of here, though, I do notice how differently people talk down here - and the confusion I cause when I ask for a "teacake" in a bakers' shop always amuses me! ^_~
 Mind me askin but what do they call it in Sheffield then? I know a teacake as a round bread like object with fruit in? I'm originally from Lancashire, where they call the Sheffield 'breadcake' a barmcake.:)

Yeah, you're right - in Sheffield, a teacake is bread with fruit in. When I ask for a teacake, though, what I'm asking for is a breadcake. *grin* If I want one with fruit in, I ask for a *currant* teacake. ^_~

I'm neither an adopted Sheffielder nor born and bred in Sheffield....in fact I think I've (so far) spent a total of nearly seven days in Sheffield:blush:
Born in Kent, lived in Kent for 7 years, moved to Cornwall for 4½ years, then back to Kent, where I've been ever since.
I don't plan to move to Sheffield in the future either, although I shall visit again (I hope).
Until recently, I held the record for travelling the furthest distance for a forum meet (in fact I went to two), although I think somebody (sorry can't remember who it was) travelled from slightly further away recently.

I remember night time raids on farms in the area, trying to steal chickens...
When I was in my early teens I used to hang around the Peace Gardens sometimes but it was hard to relate to the locals...
Once a woman at a tripe stall in the Castle Market gave me a huge plate of the stuff, free!

I attend meetings of The Sheffield 100 Forum which is a consulation group organised by Sheffield City Council to find reactions to various ideas and proposals that may arise from time to time.
Last night was a meeting to discuss the question that some may have seen elsewhere on this forum about "what is great and good about Sheffield" and what "would we like Sheffield to be famous for in 10 years time".
The Forum is selected from applicants to try and cover the demographic variety of Sheffield residents.
Now, the remarkable thing was that, of a group of over 80 people last night, more than half were incomers!
So. If you are Born & Bred Sheffield, why not try and have an input into how your city is run and planned.
Have a look at the website and send in an application!!!
me too cgksheff. which group were you in? :). I'm also not from these parts although I've lived here longer than anywhere else having previously lived a nomadic existence.

Born and bred. Born in Firvale, brought up on Longley estate, moved to Wadsley Bridge when I got married, and live in High Storrs. I've lived in Shefield most of my life except for stints away at college.
Are you a born and bred sheffielder, or an adopted sheffielder?
Adopted - moved here a little over a year ago when I got a job here.
I'm originally from a little village close to Scunthorpe (near Lincoln).
Born and Bred in Bolton, lived here for18 years but the small thing about Lancashire and Yorkshire that stops me wanting to be adopted.
Its an ok place though.

Hehe - hope you don't mean jibes from Kentboy - ;)
Where abouts did you live?
As for me, I was born in London, lived all over my county.
There is only one relative remaining in Leeds, with most of the South Yorkshire lot having pegged it.
My Uncle's father was born and brought-up in Grimesthorpe, meanwhile, other relatives on my mother's side - with my grandmother and her three daughters being born in Barnsley, and living there, before moving south with her husband [a Londoner], after he returned from working out in Iran (Persia in those days).
Daughter One married married my uncle, the one with the father from Grimesthorpe, and they moved around Sheffield - she moved to Yorkshire to teach, after being brought up in Kent, noting that she'd been born in Barnsley.
They moved around the north, and returning to Sheffield - their daughter was then born, and also a Sheffielder. Noting that with my uncle's first wife, they had 'Mrs Relative', and they're (along with Mr Relative) - the S6ers.
In short, my aunt and uncle moved around - with the uncle living around Grimesthorpe, Wyburn(?), Arborthorne, up to Wakefiled (the see list after colon): Wakefield, Dodworth, Broomhill, Fulwood, Ranmoor (they then went down to Kent, for relatives on their way out).
Mr Relative: Mosborough, Greystones, Clowne, Eire, Greystones, Psalter, Walkley.
Mrs Relative: Psalter, Greystones (see Mr R's list).
That's all the Sheffielders covered!
:P

Originally from near Donny.
Cherry_Pop 25-12-2005, 21:05 I was born and bred in Sheff. Started in Northern General hospital, lived at Firth Park, Tinsley then moved to Gleadless when I was six. I work in Plymouth but come back home at every opportunity!
Born in Stannington (Home birth - Clark Grove). Moved to Fulwood (Stone Delf) at 3 yrs. Grew up there (Fulwood Infants, Hallam Junior, Tapton Comprehensive Schools). Joined the Royal Navy at 16, saw a bit of the world, met my future wife in the Ranmoor Inn whilst on leave on New Years Eve 1983. Married at Ranmoor Church (1985) by the Bishop of Sheffield (Father-in-Law was his Chauffer/Gardener) then moved to Plymouth, two sons conceived there (wife shipped to Sheffield for births so they could play cricket for Yorkshire)! Then moved to Portsmouth, then Catterick (working with the army) then Plymouth again. Things started to feel not quite right when my then 5yr old lad started school and began to pick up a Plymouth accent
Decided then I had to get back to my roots and so bought a house in Mosborough, where thankfully my kids learnt to speak 'proper'!
Been there ever since and have no intention of leaving Sheffield again... unless we win the lottery in which case I will be posting to the SF from the Caribbean :D
I am a born and bred sheffielder I was born down attercliffe about 800 yards from the old tinsley tram sheds just down weedon street and off to the left, lived down there until I was 4 years old then moved to lowedges then back down to attercliffe when I was 9 years old due to my parents splitting up stayed on attercliffe until I was 18 years old. then moved back to lowedges until I went to live in holland for about 4 years. I have lived on woodseats, woodhouse, bradway, norton, and now I am due to leave my city of sheffield and go and live in scotland for good.
Waltheof 25-12-2005, 23:24 After all these messages from born and bred Sheffielders I have to confess I come from far away in the Antipodes but this has been my adopted home for over 30 years so perhaps I may be considered an honorary Sheffielder by now! I spent time in Leeds but I have put down roots in this city and belong to societies that are trying to preserve its Victorian heritage. I have felt very much at home here.
I moved up North from right down South... in July 2004... and never looked back... I have and still finding out just how friendly you Northern people are... :D i've felt very welcomed to the North! :D
So i guess you can say that i've been adopted... well i hope i can anyway... :)
Batspice 26-12-2005, 12:22 Born in Newcastle and lived there for the first 24 years of my life. Married a lad in Dronfield (although he was born in Carlisle to Scouse parents). We are lucky that the beautiful Peak District is on the doorstep too.
My ancestors apparently WALKED up to Sheffield from Devon in the late 1800s for the work available in industry here. Bless em!

OK...moving on to a more positive note, Sheffield is my adopted city, and I think it's boss. Surely, in Hallamshire (and God's green land if anyone knows the poem) is a city built like no other. Essentially because it looks completely unplanned. Or planned by somebody on acid. If you made Sheffield in Sim City, you would lose... but for some reason, it works. It's like the city council started to build a metropolis here but then gave up because there were too many trees. And hills. And people just weren't having it, thankyouverymuch.
Was born in Hyde Park hospital, Leeds (which was mysteriously demolished soon after my birth) and have lived here for a little over 6 years, having come here for uni. Now I'm completing a PhD after being offered to do one by my supervisor at a bus stop. He was buying his wife some flowers. I was collecting my last wages from a labouring job I was too lazy to do. Upon walking into Oxfam, I saw what looked like a German industrial death metal LP that said PhD on it, and so decided to take up his offer. What have I learned from this? Never trust a 'sign' from a higher deity. If one does exist, I'm sure it is only mocking us. Or me.
Incidentally, Nether Edge (where I now reside) was built by George Wostenholm, master cutler, who lined every road with trees after visiting Boston, Massachusetts, and thinking that it looked cool. Originally, it was built for the rich. Obviously he didn't expect loads of hippies and weirdos to move in in the 70s. Similarly, Park Hill was designed by a Fritz Lang/2000AD fan, and the NCPM was designed by a magpie on mushrooms.

BobDB, i aint going to criticise you as you're rightly entitled to your opinion.
Calling Sheffield a dump is without any reasonable explanation doesn't carry any weight. Sheffield is not that different to many other cities in the UK. What does astound me is your view of the people. To label 30% as Student is ridiculous. sure there are one or two areas of Sheffield with a high % of students but Sheffield is a big place. As for the other 70% i disgaree. We have a small share of ignorant/arrogant people but i would say a smaller number than a large % of the other towns and cities.
The people are generally down to earth and many i meet who are not from Sheffield are here because of the people.
spyro2000 27-12-2005, 13:43 I think BobDa B is being a bit harsh and over the top here.
Sheffield is a decent city. Its not the best City around, and has its problems, but what City doesn't.
As for the people, I have found that Sheffield has probably got the friendliest people I have seen anywhere in my life. And Im not even from Sheffield.
On the downside though, Sheffield does seem to have a high percentage of crackheads and alkys.

Off topic, but re your sig... WTF is a "Yam Yam"?!
BobDaBuilder 27-12-2005, 14:20 Contrary to the what I am saying i'm not trying to be hostile, I guess i'm just in a bad mood...sorry to offend those who can see this, you lot that take this personal 'it is'...
I agree Sheffield is not the only city in this great nation that has a large number of ignorant people, I come from the west midlands and there are also a large number there but it's the way in which people are ignorant that gets me...for some reason a large number of the population feel that the world owes them a favour and don't see any reason why they should move out of the way for anyone, this doesn't bother me to much when it's me they walk into cos I have pretty broad shoulders and can do as much damage to someone as they can to me but when people walk into my missus and kids I feel myself biting really hard on my lip...and car drivers are the same, I can't think of one occurence when I have been sat at a junction and someone has slowed down to let me out...???
Then there's Meadowhall...this isn't the only large mall in the world but you'd think it was the way people walk round it, I've seen funerals move faster.
And as for the city centre, what is so great about it, there are villages that have more to offer than Sheffield city centre, even my missus is from Sheffield and doesn't use the city centre if it can be avoided, we take our custom to Leeds, Chesterfield, or Birmingham...
Anyway, i'm starting to sound like an old woman now so i'll leave this thread I think...sorry for voicing my opinion, just thought that's what you were after

Hello - Sheffield born and bred (till 18 yrs that is) with the great name of Northern General Hospital on my birth certificate. I was in a West London resturant on xmas eve when i bumped into a guy who looked like Poirot (The Belgian Detective) then i remembered he used to be one of my teachers back in 1994!! Eleven years to see your teachers again. Bought back a lot of memories. How the place has changed since the 80s/90s. Anyway very proud of my Sheffieldness if you can call it that.

Gods honest truth, truly terrifying......

I was born 'darn sarf'. My mum was on holiday at her sister's, just across the road from where Magna Carta was signed.
Lived most of my life in Sheffield, apart from a few periods working away.
hennypenny 22-02-2009, 10:45 I live on the same street in Hillsborough next-door-but-one to the house where I was born (and where my dad still lives), in the next street on from where my mum lived as a child. Dad was a foreigner from Barnsley, but as he has been here for 55 years now, I guess he can be called an adopted Sheffielder.
nosy nellie 22-02-2009, 10:59 Born and bred in Sheffield. Hammond Street.
Then grew up in Hillsborough.
Now Stannington.
Sheffield is the biggest friendliest village in the world.:banana::bigsmile:

I'm an adopted Sheffielder. Came here in 1988 to go to university and never went home again.
Last year I crossed the threshold and have now spent more than half my life here, so I think I qualify just a bit as a Sheffielder.

VERY! But the one thing Ive learned by living here, is that this city is the centre of the universe. A friend of mine from high school is living here and I didnt even know it until she contacted me on facebook! lol.
Truffles 22-02-2009, 15:39 I am sheffield born and bred and and extremely proud of it, makes me angry when you get some southerners thinking that we live in a hovel.
Sazz1006 22-02-2009, 15:40 Born at Totley, lived there until I was 4, then Walkley, Crookes, Ranmoor, Fulwood, Dore, Woodseats and now Beauchief. I've never lived anywhere else - not something I particularly brag about as life events dictated I stayed here but then it doesn't bother me as I've travelled lots. I love Sheffield and as Jarvis Cocker said 'Sheffield is the centre of all greatness in the Universe'
summertimeuk 22-02-2009, 15:41 a southerner can not be a northener lol perish the thought
Powerage 22-02-2009, 18:09 Born in the Northern General 47 years ago lived at Sky Edge until 4 then lived at Greystones until got married since then have moved about a bit Meersbrook, Walkley, Netherthorpe, and now been at Norwood for 10 years.
I have no interest in leaving Sheffield as I havn't found anywhere I would like better yet!
My OH is from Harlow in Essex and he loves it here and would never go back down there.
Born at Netheredge Maternity Hospital 1960 and lived around Sheffield ever since, so i would say 'i am definately born and bred' from parents in Wybourn and Netherthorpe.
