View Full Version : MSN Messenger
I know from past threads that people post on things like faceparty and hot or not. Does everyone use messenger as well??
Am I missing out on anything by not using it??
god I must be bored today
Phanerothyme 14-12-2004, 15:07 MSN messenger (or trillian or any other IM client) is only as useful as the number of people you can use to contact. But yeah, it can be very handy. Try it out, it's free after all.
Skatiechik 14-12-2004, 15:13 register for start :D You can use any email, you will need to create a passport.
Then all you need is someone elses email address to add who also uses MSN.
Personally I find it quite useful as most of my friends use it, so it is just as quick to log on and ask them a question as it is to phone them.
NatalieSheff 14-12-2004, 15:14 i use it all th etime when im at home but i have to remember to be invisble of people hassle me hen im trying to surf
So when you log on is there a list of people to chat to (like a chatroom) or do you just sit and wait??
sparklesista 14-12-2004, 15:23 Lol! To be honest I thought everyone used an IM such as MSN messenger but I guess I'm wrong!
I've been using MSN messenger for about 6 years now, well it seems that long anyway! Lol!
NatalieSheff 14-12-2004, 15:26 msn is your own friends who you put on. it will pop up when one of ur mates goes online!, and u will pop up on there screen when u log on
cgksheff 14-12-2004, 15:27 go to www.msn.com and click on "Messenger" to learn all about it.
and don't forget the beta web version which comes in handy if your work firewall/policy blocks use of "normal" messenger. Go to http://webmessenger.msn.com
Martin_s 14-12-2004, 15:28 I've been using a wide variety of instant messenger systems for a while now and I wouldn't be without them..
Useful for work, chatting, and the like... but like Natalie said.. beware the twilight zone when you suddenly realise you've lost hours to random banter... Nothing seems to get done :)
Useful for avoiding homework :P

Ahhhh you been a victim of that too :hihi:
Appear Offline.. Magical Invention in my eyes :D
Too many forum folk nag.. Sorry talk to me in there, Curse you MSN
Maybe we could ask for an "MSN Messenger Handle" to be added to forum user profiles? I know there's ICQ and Yahoo in there, but I only use MSN.
Is it worth suggesting to Site Admins?

Sure, go for it mate
I'm with you on that
Draggletail 14-12-2004, 17:02 Yep, Me too. Good idea!!

This is a great idea - I was trying to alter my Forum Profile the other day to add my MSN details, but there wasn't anywhere to put them!
StarSparkle
Here's another idea... Why don't people just PM those that they may wish to add :D
Works for me most of the time

Sounds like themost solid idea to me so far!
Sometimes I hate talking to people, even my friends!
No I am not weird, just like my own company.
FairyNormal 14-12-2004, 21:55 I use MSN and Yahoo mainly to chat to mates/family.
Yahoo can be annoying with lots of unwanted PM's so I usually log in as invisible.
Can you be invisible on MSn and still send/receive messages?
Surely if everybody opts to be invisible on these services, the whole thing would just fall down? or can you 'instant message' somebody who isn't currently on line (like the PM system here)?
FairyNormal 15-12-2004, 09:33 You can send messages to people who are off line on Yahoo but not on MSN (as far as I know anyway) MSN tends not to get lots of unwanted PMs unlikeYahoo which is a pain in the a**e for letting anyone PM you.
Thanks FF. I've not tried any of these, but I know my teenage brother in Cambridge uses instant messaging, so was debating whether to join in. He doesn't do phones, but 'chats' to our sister on MSN (I think).
ToryCynic 15-12-2004, 10:08 Feel free to add me anyone - I doubt I'll be on though atm...
Alex
sparklesista 15-12-2004, 10:58 Yeah, I agree it's a good idea! Has Geoff seen this thread yet?
I use yahoo messenger, tried MSN for a while but it seemed to freeze up the p.c so it got the boot.

Hi Rach
Well, that makes 2 of us..I've just had problems and came to the forum to see if anything had been posted!
StarSparkle 23-01-2005, 18:45 And that makes 3 of us!
I've been trying to log on for ages, but it keeps throwing me off :suspect:
StarSparkle
threecolours 23-01-2005, 18:48 Tried it earlier on today and it didnt work then. I've now given up...wanted to 'chat' to someone too...
Yep, The damned thing has been up and down like a brides nightie :(
Hi all,
If you check the service status through the Tools menu you'll see a very nice error message that indicates that the mighty Microsoft sometimes have the same problems as the rest of us...:)
Earlier on I saw a message that effectively said that it could display an error message because there was an error....I liked that!
Joe
threecolours 23-01-2005, 18:57 that's some image owdlad...glad I've given up trying!
I use MSN and Skype (http://www.skype.com).
Skype allows you to have free voice over IP chat, and is a lot better than voice convos over MSN or ICQ et al.
its working now... at least for the moment!

What do you do???
1/ Sell your soul to the devil.
2/ Install a virus, it comes in the form of either MSN or Trillian **shivers**
3/ Have too much time at hand and look for an appropriate avatar for an hour or two.
SpiderPete 24-01-2005, 22:22 I cannot do without MSN ... I did use ICQ but thats a bit crap now...
Somebody suggested it would be a good idea for me to sign up.
I can't find the 'contacts' button anywhere, so I can't 'add contact', so now I'm stumped
I can't see it here (http://messenger.msn.co.uk)
or here (http://uk.my.msn.com/)
:help:
From the top of my head (because I'm not at my computer), you go into the menu bar at the top of messenger (file I think....maybe....maybe not....) and there should be an 'Add Contact' option.
You can even add me! andy_williams78@hotmail.com not that i ever turn it on, but it's nice all the same :)
Sorry if the above is completely wrong, my head has been known to invent stuff sometimes and believe it.
cgksheff 04-03-2005, 09:46 It's all in the window when you run the program.
On second thoughts, Maybe it's one of the options at the bottom of your mesenger. possibly.....erm, ok I think I am making things up now. Need to lie down.....
Strix, think you need to actually sign-in to the messenger application itself. I don't think you can add a contact from the msn website. If, like me, can't install the messenger program on the PC you're currently on (at work), you may be able to access the web-based version at http://webmessenger.msn.com . You should get nearly all the same functionality as if you'd installed the actual program. Feel free to add me as a contact hotphiluk@hotmail.com if it helps you have a play around with it.
moongarden 04-03-2005, 10:30 in response to getting random messages when i'm trying to work (i'm usually logged in during the day) i have simply blocked all but a handful of my contacts so that they don't see me when i come online.
the ones who are not blocked are the ones who know i'm at work and only send short messages or a quick chat about something important and colleagues at work
also you can get messenger add ons - try messenger plus i find it really useful (google it)
Thanks guys  It hadn't downloaded properly, so I didn't have the icon at the bottom of my screen, or the window I was supposed to be looking in.
All sorted now
Need to do some work before investigating further :P
Somebody's already got 'Strix' as their nickname :(

So if you block someone, do you just appear off line to them? I thought that they knew you were blocking them so I didn't use so not to offend anyone.
