A brilliant band, and very raucous for their time. They had loads of great songs. Glennis 17-07-2007, 15:42 Noddy, is a great bloke ... really down to earth. slimsid2000 17-07-2007, 15:59 playing some 70s slade this morning you would think it would be really dated but its not top stuff I quite like them, but their Xmas 73 song is not as good as the Wizard one in my humble opinion. mikeG 17-07-2007, 17:04 Their stuff still sounds ok today to me. Noddy Holder's autobiography is a good read. Powerage 18-07-2007, 16:59 I used to really like Slade when I was young saw them in concert a couple of times they were brilliant really knew how to get the crowd going. I was upset when at school I had Slade written in my pencil case and another girl went mad saying only boys liked Slade!!! Rich 18-07-2007, 20:06 Some of their songs are great, but that Christmas one they did in the 80s was just cheesy and annoying IMO. I used to work in a Supermarket around Christmas time, and "So here it is merry Christmas" was played in constant rotation alongside the equally annoying Shakin' Stevens Christmas song, I was never so happy to reach the end of the day come 5 PM. happyhippy 18-07-2007, 21:01 That was recorded in '73 (I think) Rich, and has done everybody's biscuit in since. That said, they headlined Donington in '81(??? before my time), and everyone I spoken to who went said they were absolutely awesome. bellis 18-07-2007, 21:11 That was recorded in '73 (I think) Rich, and has done everybody's biscuit in since. Cost 33p IIRC. God I feel old. muddycoffee 18-07-2007, 23:08 You can count me in as a slade fan. My favourite track is Far Far Away. They were so big in the 1970s it has to be pointed out how many hit singles they had. They are about 7th in the all time record of top 20 hits and during the 70s most top division football clubs had a slade song as one of their fave chants. A bunch of incredible talents too. They were much bigger than Oasis ever got at their height, but there wasn't quite as much money in it in their time more is the pity.. does anyone know what this means ? " I got a red light on the wrist without me even getting kissed " There must be some hidden meaning :) happyhippy 18-07-2007, 23:21 Muddy, I don't know what you mean ...... ;) LordChaverly 19-07-2007, 13:13 yes, I like these many hit wonders. From the standpoint of popular music, they were probably the best thing to come out of the Black Country since Robert Plant (and better than either Judas Priest or UB40). They would never win any prizes for sophistication, but they were very good at what they did. They also made a film in broad Black Country accents. This required the distributors to add sub-titles when the film was shown in the US feargal 19-07-2007, 13:22 They would never win any prizes for sophistication, but they were very good at what they did. How dare you!! Holder was clearly very sophisticated - see his mirrored top hat as proof. ;) We'll not mention Dave Hills' "SuperYob" guitar though. slimsid2000 19-07-2007, 13:30 How dare you!! Holder was clearly very sophisticated - see his mirrored top hat as proof. ;) We'll not mention Dave Hills' "SuperYob" guitar though. Ah yes, I forgot about the mirrored top hat, which was clearly a sartorial artefact of profound symbolic significance, probably having something to do with reflecting the souls of all those who gazed upon it. Indeed, it probably derived from the skull scene in Hamlet - 'alas poor Yorick, he is dead', or from the Nietzschean warning that 'be careful not to stare into the abyss, in case the abyss stares back at you'. As for Hill's 'superyob' guitar. we should remember that this was in perfect balance with his silvery, super-high platform heels PaulTansley 19-07-2007, 18:48 Slade, the best band around 1972/3 I saw them at the City Hall, Alex Harvey band were there support group then. I have to disagree though I think Slades music is very dated but in a good way like 50s rock n roll. |
