What do people think about the pile of stainless steel scrap outside Midland Station, is it an eyesore or what? I can't wait for the gypsies to have it away :gag:

I love it.

The steel, the water, the cascade - brilliant stuff. It's much better than what we used to have in the area.

It's fantastic - beautifully designed and made. It's an asset to Sheffield. There have been some teething problems with the water flow and lighting but they are being sorted.

I love it, especially at night (I wonder how many times its been photographed...you can almost garuntee if you go at night there'll be someone standing there with a tripod) I think its great :)

I think it's a wonderful first glimpse of Sheffield as you get off the train :) Much more inviting that it used to be around there!!!

That's the actual steel thing he's refering to....it runs along the back of the waterfall bit along the line of the road! I think it looks amazing at night....I went away for a day or two few weeks ago, came back and you see that as you leave the station and it really is a great first impression to give visitors of the city :)

Personally I really like it - but as they say you can't please all of the people all of the time!

I love it! I've been working out a way to get a similar design in my garden.

All I need now is Darmuid Gavin.

Going by the general view, it seems a majority of people are happy with it!

Fair enough if it's not to everybody's taste though :) I'd say to the original poster to go and have a look one evening and take a closer look :)

How long has that been there?!
Last time I was in S. it was a roundabout!

I like it lots :) It would benefit from some greenery/planting IMO

Potential downside:
Reflexions from sun on all that stainless blinding motorists - potential for accidents?

Travelled to Manchester,Bridlington and Derby, last week by train and have to say Sheffield compares favourably.

You're the first and only person I've known who doesn't think it's great.* Would you really prefer that area to have stayed the way it was before?

I vividly remember the night it officially opened. I was with none other than Ms Dazzler, and we feasted on mince pies and mulled wine and saw the almighty bomb-like fireworks off the top of the multi-storey car park. The new square, fountains and sculpture looked stunning, and I was thrilled when I compared it to my first ever impression of Sheffield twenty :o years ago.

*Just remembered one other poster said it was a total waste of money which should have been used to benefit the people of Sheffield - because of course local people never ever go near the Station, Showroom or Hallam University. :loopy:

I think it looks very impressive and it's a reminder to us all of what Sheffield, as a city, was originally based on - steel and water.

I think it's lovely. My kids love it too. Now if it would only stop raining we could enjoy it in the sunshine.

Generally, the area is a vast improvement on what it used to be like. I have only recently seen the area from the station side, and was quite impressed. However, I am not sure about the cutting edge thing though. From the road side it looks awful, from the other side, still not sure about it. Maybe I will have to look at night time instead when it is all lit up

The whole area is wonderful - an impressive first impression to anyone who arrives by train. This is an example of city planners and the council getting something right.

There is however one huge grumble. The steel curtain, repeat STEEL curtain wasn't made in Sheffield.

That is both embarrassing and a tragedy.

So to make up for this silly error, I want to see a huge pair of knife and fork arching over the Parkway as you enter Sheffield. Unlike the steel curtain above, IT could have an inprint that says 'Made In Sheffield'.

Have to say the area looks better than it used too. My only problem is what it looks like in a few years. I hope they continue to maintain it. The city gateway does create a much better impression these days

Having worked in the steelworks all my life I just hate to see stainless scrap lying around

A fountain with gardens and a few trees would have looked ten times better, but if your all for it then that's fine :gag:

I agree but maybe local firms just weren't competetive?

We think it's lovely and we have been down there and walked up taking in the peace gardens and millenium gallery, photos all the way to send to my ex Sheffield friend in Bournemouth.
Each to his own obviously but I think the OP must have a blindfold on.

It's very nice IMO. I used to do a lot of train travel and Sheffield station and surroundings was always embarrassingly bad. Not any more :)

Surely you're not serious!! I think it looks brilliant, especially at night. It was fantastic at xmas with the blue tree, I love it.

I agree it looks great at night!

The wasteland of paving on the same level as the station could have done with something in it as it's not really a natural space to sit up towards the steps. Maybe when they finish building whatever is next to the steps it might be more of a place to sit. Overall it would have benefitted from [more] plants imo as it looks a bit bleak with all that paving/water on a grey rainy day (grey rainy nights it looks great thanks to the lights!).

That's been discussed before in a previous thread. The steel was made in Sheffield, but when the making of the structure went out to tender, no Sheffield firm could make it. It was made by a firm in Bristol - everyone would have prefered it to be made here, but it wasn't possible.
