View Full Version : Why am I the only bloke who likes chickfliks?
Powerage 15-07-2007, 21:05 Why oh why do I seem to have the only bloke in the world who seems to like chick fliks and I seem to be the only woman who hates them:loopy:
I have had to sit through You've got mail tonight Yawn,
Other previous boring films have been Sliding Doors, When Harry Met Sally and my all time most hated film Pretty Woman aaargh.
What I want to know is if there are any other blokes out there who like them or who would admit to liking them?
haddockman 15-07-2007, 21:21 I like Love Actually :O
Ooh Sliding Doors, that's a good film!!
He's not alone :P
I will admit to liking some, but not all chick flicks. Only watching chick flicks is wrong though, are you sure he's not pretending for your sake, doing the whole good boyfriend thing? :)
CorkerSWFC 15-07-2007, 21:37 Are you sure he just doesn't like all the sexy ladies what are in them lol.
discodown 15-07-2007, 21:41 nowt wrong with chick flicks!
although I would rather die than sit through pretty woman

No definately not as he knows I hate them. Although he could be doing it just to wind me up:huh:
Nowt wrong with chick flicks, I like watching a fair few. Maybe he wants the fairytale relationship.
pattricia 15-07-2007, 21:49 You would think that I would like chickfliks being a woman, but I hate them.I cant understand a man liking them at all, but everyone has different tastes.
CorkerSWFC 15-07-2007, 21:50 Id rather watch Match of the Day any day lol
purdyamos 15-07-2007, 22:23 I feel a bit disheartened when films like When Harry Met Sally are labelled 'chick flicks', is it just because they centre round relationships, or the female is more than slinky eye candy? As long as they're not over-syrupy.
Some modern ones are in the tradition of screwball comedies in the 30's - my all time favourite genre, where the two people hate each other and after slogging it out in a battle of wits and daft circumstances, realise they sort-of-like each other really, but not in a gooey way (Think of Sally saying 'I hate you, Harry, I really hate you' but with Katherine Hepburn ironic haughter instead of schmalz.) They weren't labelled for either sex, they were just brilliant films, full stop.
I think it's quite nice that your OH likes them, and a pity you don't. Perhaps you could write a screwball script about the fact that you don't agree. :hihi:

Me too - they're so horribly contrived and false
I did love "Pretty Woman" though... :)

Yes but the genre you describe where they hate each other etc are so predictable you know from the start they are going to end up together so why bother with the film?
I cant help it they just bore me.
It depends on which ones. I do have male friends who like the intricate storylines of Amelie, or My Sassy Girl.
BoroughGal 19-07-2007, 13:34 I know a certain Wednesdayite - who shall remain nameless, who likes the odd chick flick or two.....
LordChaverly 19-07-2007, 13:40 Generally speaking, men only pretend to like chick flicks when they like the chick who wants to see the flick.
Preacher Man 19-07-2007, 14:07 i like seeing the chick flick "her bean", visually its a masterpiece. has anyone else seen it?

Its not just you.
I hate them with a passion, always have and always will. They make me want to vomit and then destroy stuff.
I like chickflicks - if they're good, just as i like any genre of film if they're good.
as for when harry met sally - chickflick - maybe, but it's waaaay more - it's the other classic film that woody didn't make!

but you're missing the point - it's kinda like life - we all know where we're heading - it's what happens inbetween that's important!
when harry met sally might be predictable in some aspects, but it's a witty, entertaining and intelligent character study. maybe most chickflicks are dumb, and maybe that's why people don't like harry and sally being labelled as a chickflick, becuase it's actually an intelligent rom-com that doesn't have the fluff that seems to define most chickflicks.
i'd be interested to know what in your opinion, as genre's go, what isn't predictable?
I like the following "chick flicks":
1] Grease (and even Grease 2)
2] Bridget Jones' Diary (both of em)
3] Love Actually
4] About a Boy
5] Annie (kill me now)
6] Calamity Jane (I deserve death I know)
7] Sliding Doors
I also love horror movies and sci fi but I'm not the sort of guy to rule out a movie because it may have the banner of "chick flick".

Very good..... that largely went unnoticed, didn't it...? ;)

You've got mail, city of angles, addicted to love, what women want, its a wonderful life, charlies angels 1-2, miss congeniality 1-2, maybe baby, grease, bridget jones 1-2, stolen hearts, titanic, theres something about mary, runaway bride, riding in cars with boys, hope floats, angelas ashes, return to me, erinbrockovich, sweet home alabama, Under the tuscan sun, father of the bride 1-2, sleepless in seattle, failure to launch, rumour has it, two weeks notice, the lake house, in her shoes, must love dogs, Just like heaven, somethings got to give... always...
Chick flicks or...

define 'good film'. personally i think there's a huge difference between a good film and a film that i like. most of the films you've listed i wouldn't say were good films, whether i like them or not. it's a wonderful life is a (better than) good film (but i wouldn't class it as a chickflick by any means) - it's widely regarded as being a classic, but the others i'd say were at best average films.
I like chick flicks... but ima chick =]

I am sorry but when harry met sally to me is just a totally boring film whether it is a chick flick or not its still boring and predicatable.
I really dont have any specific genre I dont think is boring most genres have their good and bad films but I just hate the will they or wont they films, we all know they will in the end!
I have a very varied taste in films some of may favourites are quite old films some are new.
Ok here goes you can all slag me now but a few of my favourites
Rebel without a Cause.
North by Northwest
Some Like It Hot
The Terminator (ok not a classic but interested in Time Travel)
Aliens
The Green Mile
The Shaw Shank Redemption
Snatch
The Phone Booth

OMG! How can you like those ones?! ;)
Actually, wasn't "When Harry Met Sally" kind of forefront for its time as a chick flick? Every old film seems kind of dumbed down now, since everyone who watches such movies can predict it.
My Sassy Girl is a nice chickflick as it has an element of time travel within it too.
Talking of will they, won't they film. Titanic is a chick flick, and they didn't. Cos one of them died! So that's a very different ending... There's quite a few like that actually. Very good twists at the end. Yet, if you really watch the whole storyline, you do get absorbed into it a lot more.
"Like a Boy" can be considered as a chickflick. Or more of a boyflick really.
