View Full Version : Is my iPod dead?

I posted a while ago because iTunes froze everytime i plugged my iPod into my new Vista laptop. I uninstalled and reinstalled iTunes several times, including the 'Vista compatible' edition but nothing worked. Today I decided to sit down and sort the problem out once and for all, and plugged my iPod into my old laptop to format it (iTunes on this laptop worked fine with it). However, when I updated iTunes and plugged it in it told me my iPod was corrupted and needed formatting. Ok, so I click format. 20 minutes later it brings up an error message telling me it cannot format it.

So now I'm left with an iPod that's useful for nothing except propping up wobbly tables. Anyone know if there's anything I can do before I start shopping for another MP3 player? :help:

It's a 1st generation 2GB iPod Nano, it shows up in the device manager but can't be accessed via Windows Explorer.

Have you checked www.apple.com/support?

Several times and it's about as useful as a brick. They just suggest reset, restore and update etc. all of which I've tried and can't be done. :(

If your running Vista don't asume that your NANO is a brick. NANO's unlike Big HDD Ipods have memory chips in them which very rare corrupt like a hard disk can.

1st i would plug the nano into another PC ;)

Then try another lead

If that all fails then look on the net to do a hard reset , i did this to my Gen 3 ipod due to Vista.

Hard reset = Menu+Enter for 6 to 10 seconds

I've done that many many times, and as I said have had it plugged into my other laptop which runs on XP and it worked fine. However I attempted to format the iPod using that computer and the formatting has failed. Normal processes aren't going to work I'm just hoping somebody has tried something unusual that worked :(

might be worthwhile taking it down to the apple store in meadowhall as theyll have a look and tell you whats wrong and how to sort it

Unfortunately I don't live in or anywhere near Sheffield now so that isn't an option :(

Mine sometimes says it needs formatting, all I need to do is hold down the middle select button and menu until it soft-resets the ipod - after that it behaves.

Until it happens again!

Well I finally decided that poor little ipod nano has joined the other faulty ipods in the sky - I've done absolutely everything (soft reset, formatting, and the last resort of restoring). It functions completely normally on its own but the hard disc is knackered - it can't be synced with a computer using iTunes or any other software so I can't put anything on it.

I've got a new nano today but took out the three year instant replacement warranty so as soon as this one goes down the pan (no doubt it will within 3 years) it'll just be swapped for a newer model if there is one.

If I now manage to get the old nano working I'll be soooo mad......

... ipod nano ... the hard disc is knackered ...

As someone else said earlier, the Nano doesn't have a hard disc inside - it uses flash memory chips to store your files. And like the same poster said, it'd be harder to muck-up those chips than a hard disc drive.

I'd be surprised if it couldn't be sorted somehow... If you're no longer near to Sheffield (and the Meadowhall AppleStore), then see if you're near one of the other AppleStores: http://www.apple.com/uk/retail

 Don't you just hate it when everyone else is right!

After yet another hour trawling the internet in search of a solution I happened upon a well hidden Apple support page on forcing the iPod into 'Disc mode' before connecting to the computer and after several frustrating restore attempts etc. it finally just decides to sync itself and also connect to my Vista laptop which it didn't before. Argh!!

No I spoke too soon, although it spent an hour and a half 'syncing' and putting all the music on there, when I disconnected it it was still empty. *sighs*
