View Full Version : What the hell is wrong with Sheffield? I just moved here.
Hi
I lived in London for 7 years and never had a problem, i sow on average 1-2 people in trouble because of violence a year and never had a problem with my car.
I have been here for FIVE weeks and have:
1)While driving home from UGC cinema seen a guy legging it with a bag in his hand and a little further up a woman on her knees looking in shock.
2)Seen another person legging it with a bag near that area.
3) THIS REALLY GOT ME P.Oed, my car was parked in my drive way (i live off the bottom of london road) and i woke up this morning to find my tire slashed,my door lock broken and my stero missing.
Starting to think i made a big mistake moving here from london, i onlly moved here because its cheaper and for uni.
I live at the bottom of london road, after all the shops on a road with houses only, i only have 8 more weeks under this address then i can move, can anyone suggest where is a good place to live in sheffield, not too far from city centre and sheffield uni.
You've had a very unfortunate introduction to this city.
I've lived here for abou 18 or so years and in that time witnessed / experinced a little crime (car broken in to, some road / cyclist rage). However, it took visits to London to get my bag stolen and working in Leeds to witness some serious street violence and the odd shooting.
I hope that your experiences with Sheffield improve; it really isn't as bad as your experiences would make you think.
I live in Walkley - a short bus ride joins us to both Uni and city centre. You might like to look at Crookes / Broomhill.
Joe
THANK YOU for your advise on the areas, i had a few others suggest crookes, will check out houses near there tomorrow.
Thanks for your advise.
Martin_s 14-12-2004, 00:43 Don't forget it's Xmas time as well and thieves will be seeing this as golden opportunity to knock off the odd punter with their goodies... Add to that copious celebratory drinks and it all adds up to a rather skewed time of year..
But yeah, not the nicest of areas... Best of luck... people up here really are a heck of a lot more personable than in London though... Give it time ...
I have a theory. The woman whose bag you saw snatched took your registration, and when you didn't give a witness statement to the police, she gave you a 'see how you like it' visit.
Am I wrong? If so, I'll edit this out if you ask.
Have you been to the 'do you believe there's a god?' thread?
PS. I'm not local either
sally_sheff 14-12-2004, 05:59 i have 3 bed semi with garage for rent from mid January not too far away but in very nice area -olive grove area, 10 mins into city centre, close to train station, 51 bus route.
£480pcm
theflyingfish 14-12-2004, 06:41 Contrary to the hysterical media, my perception of crime is that it is far worse in provinciaL cities than the captital, especially that nasty random "you looking at my bird" violence. That never happens in London - mostly becasue people are too occupied and having a good time doing whatever they want to do (whatever you want in London) compared to provincial cites and small towns in particular where the entertainment is limited to drinking and the frustration bubbles over...
Reading, Hertford, Canterbury...there's some places I lived where threats of random violence was far bigger than any bigger city.
I beleive that S Yorks actually has a very low crime rate as a whole, but I know at least three people (myself invcluded) who have been burgled in the last year and two people who were randomly attacked (resulting in visits to hospital) and that is in a 'nice area'.
I've lived in London, and I didn't have one problem whilst there.
I've been here for three years now, and whilst I've never experienced any grief first hand, I have had people force their way into my house on my lodger. They were looking for the former owner, who apparently was a bit of a crim (Incidentally - the intruders were from London!). They didn't harm my lodger, but they cetrainly shook him up - however I was never worried they would return, and sure enough, they haven't.
I still would've liked to be in when they turned up though.
Overall, neither city scares me, and I'm not worried to walk the streets of either.
However, I am not blind, merely lucky.
People get attacked, robbed and assaulted in every major town and city in this country every day.
You can deny that it happens in your home town if you want, but it does.
to paraphrase a famous philosipher (I think!)..."If a stabbed man falls down in the street, and there is no-one around to see him, does he still make a noise?"
Yes he does, he says "ouch"
al82 - nobody is victimising you, you have just been unfortunate enough to witness the lowest side of BRITISH society firsthand.
Is this just the problem of moving to a new city?
If you're born in a place, you grow up knowing which parts of town to avoid, which side of the road to walk on, who to cross the street to avoid. In a new place you have to learn the hard way.
Also, if coming here as a student - perhaps the accommodation you can afford is in a less-nice-neighbourhood than your parent's house?
al82- sorry to hear you've witnessed such things...
People from round Sheffield are wonderful people to speak to and socialise with... please dont let these events outside the internet sour your opinion of us all-- as usual its just the idiot minority that spoils it for everyone and gives tourists/outsiders a low opinion of the city.
And merry xmas to you as well.
I wish you every happiness for the coming new year too!
Yes what you said is true, it only takes one to ruin someone’s opinion but I have calmed down now, even though the police came 2 days after it had happened they are very helpful here.
HERE IS SOMETHING FUNNY a friend of mine at work who moved up here a week before I did wasn't at work a few days ago so when he came in for his shift yesterday I asked him where he was and guess what..........someone stole his Ford Fiesta.
I know students don't have a lot to spend on rent and at the moment I pay £395 pcm for a one bedroom apartment.
Someone said when you grow up in a city your safer because you know where to avoid and where you can go, that's true, I guess if I walked around Acton and brixton in London I would have the same problems, but the police man who came here told me it is a safe area (near the bottom of London road, opposite city centre).
Thanks for all the replies I do feel allot better and it has helped me see that it was most likely bad luck.
Merry x-mas to you all.

Merry x-mas to you all.
The area that you are talking about always intimidates me!
I often feel like something is lurking around the corner, which is quite odd for me!
Don't forget that South Yorkshire is the 'car crime capital of britain', so your insurance will be sky high. We have the greatest number of untaxed/uninsured vehicles on the road, so be careful out there!
Hope things get better for you.
I came here as a student too. I like the fact that Sheffielders are approachable and friendly. It's almost impossible to go into a pub and not wind up in conversation (unlike Peterborough!)
the bottom of London road and anywhere off it is not safe and very very likely to get broken into. The nearer the bottom the worse it gets....
try Crookes, Broomhill, Walkley, Ranmoor, Crosspool
I hope they are not making a mistake building 1000+ student apartments in this 'no-go area' near the bottom of London Road.
I bet they haven't considered how many students own cars these days. :help:
TylerDuerden 29-12-2004, 16:05 In fairness the bottom of London Road is a dump. Sheffield is an amazingly safe city when you consider the size. Just unfortunate that you landed in Beirut. Get yourself somewhere decent like Crookes/Walkley.
I don't think Walkley can be described as a low crime area, it has a pretty high rate of burglary and if you're looking for a place where your car won't be broken into I wouldn't put Walkley at the top of my list.
It is a pretty reasonable area though, certainly wouldn't feel in danger walking about there like London Road, and the pubs are good, it's just the car and house crime that would put me off.
ppl what s the best area to live 4 a student in univ of sheffield, movin in june2005??????????
I've lived in Sheffield for 25 years now, and seen very little street violence or crime. Maybe I'm looking in the wrong places? Sheffield has always felt safer than Leeds or Manchester to me.

Ahh, so you admit Rotherham is just part of Sheffield do you ?
Don_Kiddick 11-01-2005, 20:43 No . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
isnt rotherham just a small town in the wonderful nation of sheffield? :)
I've recently moved back to Sheffield (born & raised here), after spending 5 years down in London. In all the years i've lived in Sheffield I've hardly seen any crime, certainly nothing like has been described. Howeverwhen living in London I got a taxi driver in running off with £20 of my money and once had my cash card cloned - taking thousands out of my account. Charming.
As much as London was fun, I'd plump for Sheffield any day, the majority of law abiding citizens are generally nicer. I think you've just had a very bad experience of Sheffield...the crimes you've seen could happen anywhere in the world nowadays, to be honest. Its not exclusive to Sheffield!

You might want to look other places on the tram route. The tram is so much better than the buses and dead easy access to both Unis from it.
Lower end of Norfolk Park is ok, not far from the college on Granville Road there are two small cul-de-sacs with garages and completely off road parking. I know someone who rents a 2-bed flat there far cheaper than you pay. Everyone there is dead nosy (which has it's downsides) but everything gets watched and I haven't heard of any problems there yet.
I don't know Hillsborough that well but you might want to look out that way too.
You might also want to look at properties where there are a few old biddies around. These old people tend to be around all the time and often notice more if anything happens.
I've only been here two years but did have one wierd experience on the motorbike. I rode through one particular area. There were kids playing on the street. They got off the road as I came through but I got the distinct impression they were sizing up the odds of getting me off the bike and nicking it from under me! Given what I later found out about the rep of the area, that was highly likely.
Like most places in England it depends in which area you live.
You've been very unlucky but that *might* be something to do with a previous incumbent at the place you are living at?
One place I've lived in here had a bad credit history because a previous tenant ran off with a car he owed a grand or so on and he left a few other debts behind as well. But that could happen anywhere in the country.
Car stereos do go missing. Get one of those ones where the front comes off or expect to lose it frequently. Never park your car in roads off the south side of Matilda St, there is always broken window glass along there. Slashing the tire is very annoying and expensive petty vandalism which makes me think it was more a hate crime directed against a previous tenant than just opportunistic car theft.
If you can muck it live in 'their' area, thieves and vagabonds tend not to sh*t in their own backyard.
But I think it's pretty much luck of the draw. I've experienced or known others who have experienced
Curb cralwers
Stereo nicked from my motor
Wheels nicked from bf's motor
Student house totally trashed by gatecrashers
Bag snatchers
Bag snatchers using knives
Cars let off handbrake and left to roll backwards down a hill by people who wanted to add some fun to their great night out at a night club
Marauding Scots nicking young family's motor in a remote village leaving them with a young baby needing doctor, stranded without a car, costing them callout fees and the like.
Cars driven round 90 degree corners on pavements at speed with no possible way of knowing if there are any pedestrians on the pavement.
Cars set on fire
and none of these happened in Sheffield, two happened in Europe.
On the whole I have felt quite safe walking through the streets of Sheffield, even at night. And most people in Sheffield are ok, despite the Yorkshiremen ;)
It's just riding the bike through some areas is a tad worrying ;)
anyway hth

My gf is already at Sheffield uni and i'm at Leeds uni but i'll be moving to Sheffield and we are going to get a house together.
Dunno what or where we are exactly looking for, but i'm guessing from what i have read so far it will be Walkely area or Crookes as we need to be close to the uni for her and also to Hillsborough Morrisons for her to get there, i don't mind as i have my car.
All i have heard or seen of Sheffield so far is crime, crime and more crime. The halls of residence where she stays theres always people climbing through the windows and stealing things, normally laptops. When i was parked just out of Sheffield to go for a walk i came back to find two of the others cars smashed up, broken into and items stolen, but thank god mine had not been touched.
My car insurance is set to rise about £150 by moving to Sheffield, thats quite a lot to me.
So anyone have any decent houses 2/3 bedrooms within easy reach of the uni and Hillsbrough Morrisons? My limit is about £550PCM tho
Plain Talker 17-01-2005, 06:23 Andy,
the reason the halls of residences are so highly targetted, is that the theives know that there are shedloads of easily stolen, and easily disposed of valuables, like mobiles, and laptops there. it's what's known as a "soft-target". (and a lot of the students don't make it easier on themselves by not being security conscious)
The important thing is to *be* security conscious, and not leave windows open, that theives can sneak through, and follow all the crime-safety advice.
The cars that were broken into that you mention... it is very likely that the car owners had left the car with valuables on display, and the little sods thought "Aye-aye, we're in, here!"
Walkley/Crookes are both strongly student-populated areas, and as such you *will* find that the insurance companies will put your premium up, because of the increased risks.
Also these areas are high-demand, from students, being so convenient for the Sheff' Uni, etc, so a lot of landlords can virtually "name their price", for rents.
However, your experience is skewed; be assured that Sheffield is, statistically, one of the safest cities to live in, and it's very friendly and welcoming.
2/3 beds will set you back around 600 pcm, depending on the landlord, and the area.
good luck in your search...
PT
Hope you have some joy in finding a different area to live. A word of warning, dont opt for Southey Green (where I live) - I read in the Journal that Southey is the 2nd worst area for car crime in England behind East London!!!
espadrille 18-01-2005, 06:20 It is very true that Sheffield is one of the safest cities to live in.
There are always car burglaries and break ins in alll cities.
This is quite a caring Citypeople help each other here and it is not notorious for drugs or violent crimes.
I am sure that someone will have some other stats to quote!
The thing is, you do feel safehere.
I went round to a friends the other night when it was around 7.30..I live at Meersbrook at moment and am moving to Crookes.
Several men passed me in the street ..I did not feel unsafe or threatened ina ny way..police
It is about whether or not you feel safe. There are places all over the country where women would just no do that for fear of being mugged, raped etc..
You will get the feel of it when you move here.
Good Luck
Nice areas to move to , I guess for students would be Walkley, crookes, Broomhill

Andy,
My father has a several flats in Sheffield, one of which I know is in the process of being re-decorated as we speak, as the previous tenants have just moved out.
It's at Hillsborough on the tram route (trams go up to the Uni) and is 5 mins walking distance from Morrisons at Hillsborough.
It's 2 bedroomed, bathroom, kitchen, lounge etc....furnished I believe and will be available within a week or two. Not sure of rent, but I think it's about 80 a week (don't quote me on that!).
If your possibly interested, send me a Private Message and I'll pass you his phone number.
Yes i was wondering what had happend to Sheffield over the years, it seems to have a lot of crime from what i get from the Sheffield Forum, it sounds realy bad all over.
I don't think half the people on the street i live on lock there doors day or night, i don't even know where my house key is, never had a robbery in the area, and it's not a posh area either, just working class, you can tell by what they drive, vans or pick up trucks are. parked in the driveways, an occasional nice car or mimi van
