Hi,

I’ve recently started a band with a friend of mine, who has been an amazingly good karaoke singer for years. But now that we have started practicing in a band, he is having a lot of trouble with his voice, to a point where he can only sing one or two songs. This is also affecting his enthusiasm and motivation to continue.

Now I know absolutely nothing about singing, but I’m guessing that it requires practice, and was wondering if anyone had any advice or could recommend any resources or vocal coaches?

Thanks

The difference between singing karaoke and with live musicians is the volume. It is much much louder with a band and you have to sing a whole lot louder.
As a vocalist you need to sing within a comfortable range so that you are not straining yourself. And you must make sure that you are not singing from the throat (like oasis do), And instead sing from the abdomen like an opera singer and you will be able to sing loud and for all night long without getting a sore throat.
The other thing that might help is for your singer to do some warm up vocal excersises and begin your music session with a song which is easier to sing.

I'm the other way round, I'm not a bad singer with a band, but put me on a kareoke machine and I'm abysmal!
