Many of us enjoy a stroll by the riverside as part of our walks, but the recent flooding did untold damage (see Foxy's recent post about this to see how it affects people). :(

This (http://www.sheffieldforum.co.uk/showthread.php?t=236215) clean-up is planned for the 5 Weirs, and (fingers crossed) I'm going to go along. Anyone else fancy donning their wellies and joining me for a mucky day?:o

I'll be in for the Saturday.
Are we going as a group?

I hope a alternative contingency date has been set. In the event of this bad weather continuing for a few more days it will be dangerous to risk clearing the river.

The Sheffield Junior Chamber of Commerce started cleaning up the Sheffield Rivers way back in 1970 or late 60s. From memory a Mr Brunskill? who lived in the WoodHolme / Banner Cross Road or near bye area was the Junior Chambers President at the time.

I helped at a section near to Hillfoot Bridge (Where they wasn't much to do!! - Scoobz) prior to getting involved fund raising for, ' The Muscular Dystrophy Group '.

Have we any forum members from the Junior Chamber from that time, to tell us their side of the story? Their initial work really made the,' Five Weirs Walk a practical proposition '.

So some one from the Junior Chamber must have started the ball rolling so long ago.
Who was he?

The Council Website says

Volunteers are asked to assemble from 12 noon onwards on Saturday 28th or Sunday 29th July at Washford Bridge on Attercliffe Road where they will be supplied with protective gear and tools.

then .....

Volunteers wanting to register can call Sheffield City Council Parks and Countryside Reception on 0114 2 500 500

I've just phoned them up - they want people to phone so they can get some idea of the number coming along.

Probably a bit over the top arranging this as a group - I advise just ringing the above number. I am going on Saturday so I expect I will see you and other walkers there.

I'll try to get to this too. Although we shouldn't go as a group, wouldn't it be nice to have a clique when we get there, a sort of unofficial SF walkers, lets not talk to anybody else sub-group?
Only kidding.........in joke to people who don't get it!

Just had a nice stroll down the Five Wiers walk this morning - definitely in need of tidying up in some places. Couple of stretches can't be walked - thieves nicking the cables and around Washbrook Bridge closed because of debris.

Hopefully will be able to do this walk later in the year and see the difference after the cleanup. I've posted my pictures here - all linked to Google Maps.

Cheers from abroad! I hope the rain has somewhat subsided and things are getting back to normal in Sheffield. Just took a peak at some of the pics neoteric posted - the last one of the grasshoper (?) is brilliant!

We're having gorgeous weather here in Thunder Bay and I'm spending it laying on the dock by the water. 8) However, I did make it out for a short hike up Candy Mountain the other day! I'm afraid I'll be so out of shape on our next walk!

Hope all is well. . . .

Hiya CG. Nice to hear you're ok. Know what you mean about being out of shape, just done my first walk for 6 weeks, and chucked the towel in 1/2 way round! Mind you it was pouring it down, so that was my main excuse!
Hopefully, see you both(?) at the end of the month.

In my second paragraph I asked a question.

Due to the recent weather was a alternative day aranged or are things going ahead on Saturday?

You need to contact the council to see whether the clean up is taking place, telephone no 2500500. As Neoteric said earlier in this thread you have to register with the council before you turn up anyway, so they know how many people to expect.

My point is ' Will it be too dangerous to attempt to clear the River after having all the recent rainfall '.
So was a contingency plan made to meet this eventuality?
If not,' Why wasn't it ? '.

And my point Albert is that there's no point asking that question in here cos the clear up has got nothing to do with Sheffield Forum!
That is why I gave you the phone number, and the official line given by the council to Neoteric which is to contact them for further information.
Why not do that, and ask them whether its taking place and what contingency plans they might have?

I may be wrong but asking questions is what a Forum is all about.

You're quite right Albert - it is! As far as I'm aware this event is still on both days (according to the nice lady I spoke to at the Council). I'll be going with a couple of non-forummers, so may well see you there.

Just to get this back on topic ..................
Well I went along and did my "little" bit of tidying up - quite a few people turned out including feargal - all kitted out with workman gloves, shovels and wheely bins. I was surprised at how well everyone just sort of organised themselves and got on with the work. After mucking in with general path clearing I found myself a tree on the river bank and cleared it of all the debris, plastic and polythene sheeting. I'm looking forward to going back and walking the path in a few weeks time and taking some photos of all our handiwork.
I actually set off and walked from Lady's Bridge this morning, unfortunately I noticed that someone - I would get banned from the Forum if I called them what I'm thinking - has again stolen the steel cables from the cobweb bridge -add to this the Bailey Bridge at Thomas W Wards is still closed because of an earlier theft. The cobweb bridge was still open but in a dangerous condition - you could actuall walk off the edge into the water. Perhaps it's time to put some cctv cameras in this area instead of always going after speeding motorists - unfortunate state of our society, etc, etc - rant over!!!

Do I gather that the voluntary work will continue for sometime to come?

I think if you keep your eyes on the council website
http://www.sheffield.gov.uk/whats-new
they will post updates.
and maybe here as well www.fiveweirs.co.uk

The Five Weirs Trust say that there is always a role for volunteers, keeping an eye out for pollution incidents, organising interpretations and promotional events and organising conservation projects.

Think we are about due to start up Thursday evening walks again - how about we do the Five Weirs in the next week or so. Perhaps a walk we can all go on :):):)
