lol, no Ant don't think you need a shrink, think most people would be terrified of Janet Street Porter, but you must face up to your fears!

I once read that the only thing you can be afraid of is fear itself. Another guy said that only the unknown is frightening, like imagining something is worse than experiencing it. Well, sort of, if you think about it.

Me? Huge, giant Amazon insects. They have 3 foot long earwigs and s*** in the rainforest. Urrgh.

I have a fear of falling, not a fear of heights but falling.

I can manage on Roller Coasters, I feel safe on them.

But I can't go to the top of a really tall building and look over the side for example.

There's quite a difference between something you are actually scared of and something you are scared might happen.

Things that actually scare me are
1 big spiders (not crappy little ones - I'm fine with them)
2 Threat of physical violence

Things I am "potentially" scared of
1 being trapped in an enclosed space and suffocating
2 what happens after death (its really the fact of oblivion that scares me - just nothingness, rather than hell or purgatory or anything like that)

I think thats about it really.

What's with this fear of clowns? Is it that all those films with murdering clowns that's done it. After all your normal clown's a happy chappie who just wants to make people laugh.
Spiders? in this country the spiders are harmless little creatures who help to stop us being overrun by flies. If you kill all the spiders I'm buying shares in a company that makes fly spray.
Snakes? in the UK. Adder, never seen one, viper, never seen one, went to Australia and saw one in the wild within 3 days of arriving. Now if you live in Oz land then be afraid of spiders and snakes...............and man eating didgeridoos.

I think fears are acquired rather than being part of your natural make up.

I used to be scared of all spiders, however small, as well as various other creepy crawlies.

Now, big spiders are the only things that bother me, and I'm getting less and less scared of them all the time, any fear can be conquered.

the only think i am scared of is wasps.

I have been stung loads of times so i know it does not hurt, but i'm the mad women running around town with her arms flapping, squealing in summer time!

If i get a wasp in my house i have to leave the house untill someone removes it. I really hate them and the older I'm getting the worse the fear gets (and the embarressment of running away)

I really need to overcome the fear before i run out infront of car one summer trying to escape the things. Oddly I can let a bee rest on my hand and not be worried strange eh?

I sooo know what you mean!! Hate swimming in the sea, won't go any further than waist deep, and even then only if I can see the bottom and if it is sandy not stoney! Was once stung by a jellyfish, maybe that is why. Terrified of sharks too, somehow got talked into going to see deep blue sea at the cinema and had to leave after about 1/2 an hour!

Off topic but I was always scared of the water until I started taking my young daughter swimming in the last 18 months. I tried a pair of her goggles one day and it was a revelation. Now I'm happier under water than I am on the surface. Still don't like going out of my depth though and still scared of drowning but it's never too late (I'm in my early 40's)

It's a weird thing for me to be scared of water..... did loads of swimming when I was younger and loved it then but got to about early twenties and wouldn't even entertain the thought of going swimming, even in a pool! After nearly a decade I'll now go swimming in the local pool but there's no way will I go in the sea. Just hate the idea of things under me that i can't see. That plus effluent, sewage and God knows what!

I'm with you on these, Sparklesista!

Clowns are just downright creepy - there's something very sinister about their makeup, it's like you can't tell who they really are.

Spiders, in fact any insect really apart from bees and ladybirds, make my skin crawl. Like NatalieSheff said, something as small as a spider shouldn't be able to move so fast! I hate their long spindly legs, and the way they move. I don't want to hurt them though, and I don't - I just want them to keep well away from me!

I'm also terrified of large expanses of water - I don't think it's the fear of drowning as such, it's the vastness of it all. My Dad and one of my uncles took me and my sister out in a rowing boat once, and I just sat there literally petrified the whole time - I couldn't have let go of the boat if I'd tried - my hands were clamped solid to it!

It sounds a cliche, but im not 'scared' of anything in life... anything realistic anyway, as in a regular situation. I suppose I dont like spiders but i dont exactly **** myself everytime i see one!
I would be scared to die in certain extreme ways... i always thought the worst ways to die would be to be stuck in a collapsed mine in a very enclosed space with obviously no way out, or (ever since watchin Jaws at 5 and developing psychological trauma from it!) being eaten alive by a shark :P

I am scared of clergymen and huge green plants (as opposed to trees, which are less scarey). The most scarey plants of all are giant hog weed, second is japanese knot weed, ivy is a bit dodgy and hawthorn too. But nettles are ok as they are honest

Clergymen are scarey because of the hidden, and of course silent power of the established church. Similar to the film - portrayed - mafia, they harbour a dark and powerful secret.

I'm irrationally scared of drowning - odd as I'm a reasonable swimmer and don't do diving, snorkelling, etc. I also suffer a little from claustrophobia. My personal room 101 would involve both of these things - if it weren't for these I'd love to go caving!

Other than that, a fear of heights which seems to be getting better since I accidentall almost fell through the bathroom ceiling, and a lessening fear of bees and wasps. With the latter, I've never been stung and I exect that one day I'll get stung and then be a bit better at coping with them. Having said that, I usually manage to shoo them out of the house (with a little help from Mrs P.)

the main things I'm scared of are big spiders, wasps and bee's.... thats a big one, I have this huge fear that one day I'll get stung and find out it's another thing I'm allergic to and fall over and die :(
i fear garlic! the smell makes me feel ill and if i eat garlic in more than a tiny amount it makes me physically sick, although thats more of an allergy, but i still fear garlic!

i'm scared of being alone forever :? thankfull it's only seen a month since i broke up with my g/f so I'm ok for now :) I'm not particulally fond of heights or climbing into attics after falling out our loft once and got caught on something and nearly suffocated cus i couldnt get free and my t-shirt was strangling me :?

I think I'm a pretty buggered man really, oh I almost forgot, I'm also hugely scared of talking to women for the first time, but surely thats pretty common with shy guys? :? bah I better stop now... lol

* Ghosts and the supernatural - even though I don't fully totally believe in it (but don't totally NOT believe in it either) and have never seen a ghost.

* Losing my health.

And as for irrational fear, I used to be absolutely TERRIFIED of the moon when I was younger - I don't even know why... never had a bad experience that I could remember. And it went on well into my teens - at a point where I KNEW it was stupid and irrational. However, you'll be pleased to know, it doen't scare me anymore. Much.

Yeah, I hate those porcelain dolls as well. There's just something really creepy about them. :?

I also get a bit spooked by large mirrors. I have a big mirror above my mantel piece in my living room and it is forever making me jump when I walk past it in the evening.
