im looking to set up a MythTV PVR (http://www.mythtv.org) at some point in the near future and having done some basic reasearch, i cant seem to find a decent card which will encode from DVB-C (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DVB-C). there are plenty for DVB-S&T but what gives on the cable side of things?
oh one more thing, Virgin Media does use DVB-C and not some other data format dont they?
Ta :)

Pfft good luck - I had a brief look at setting that up and gave up - between encyrypted channels and all the rest of it I just couldn't be bothered. I've built using a dual DVB-T tuner for freeview stuff and am adding a USB hardware MPEG encoder to plug the Telewest box into to archive stuff from there (the telewst box is a PVR in its own right so I'll just record to that and spool it off at my leisure)

hmm, tell me more. AFAIK mine has no HD or any other storage medium built in and so could only stream via scart etc. to another box. are you paying for the old TVdrive or whatever virgin have it named these days?

Yeah, I've got a TV-Drive - mainly for HighDef access but there ain't much on there any more :)
My basic plan is to hook the Myth box up like I would a DVD Recorder so can archive stuff off to there, be time consuming but at least it'll work :)
Myth itself is great, since I'm building for the project I've been careful to specify equipment that is well documented, so its so far going very well, although its not yet finished.

did you actually get a working box with a DVB-C card and then find out that there were encrypted chanels or did that come up in your research? reason i ask is that i get just the basic package from virgin which is just one or two extra chanels above freeview's list. would they be encrypted also do you know?
might be best just getting a freeview card with a couple of hardware tuners/encoders.

I never got as far as speccing hardware, just started reading about encrypted channels and what is effictively the sim card for cable TV and just decided I couldn't be bothered with the hassle.
