Anybody had any problems lately with having there number plates stolen ?
Its the 3rd time this has happened to me in the past 6 months or so on 2 different cars :( , im in the tinsley area by the way - cars had to be parked on a side road as i have nowher else to put them really .
The first time it happened the police told me that they got used by some scum doing a runner from the petrol station in morrissons at catcliffe .
Had to revert to parking the cars on the grass verge on the front of our house as i have no driveway ....... dont know what the council will think of this but i aint shifting em for nobody . Cars now have security cameras pointed on them 24/7 now so hopefully this will deter would be scumbags .
Im also looking into having a proximity sensor installed so i can hear a audible voice/alarm if anybody gets 2 close ..... does anybody know of a reliable reputable alarm company that they can put me in touch with ?

Thanks in advance guys n gals

As there is very little reason for removing the number plates from your car why not stick them on with “no more nails” type adhesive and drill the screwheads out to prevent them been removed.

This would be a cheaper solution than a good proximity alarm ( http://www.evolutionice.com/index.php?act=viewProd&productId=9) that can cost several hundred pounds.

Alternatively you could fit a concealed radio camera ( http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?ModuleNo=115198&TabID=1&source=1&doy=11m7) in your car and get a really good look at the local criminal that is targeting you.

Last I heard was that they stick them on a car and fill up with fuel.
No need to pay if you have false plates.

Only what I have heard and not fact.

Yeh , forgot 2 mention i did this with my other car that it happened on , the only reason im not 2 happy doing this is if the plate ever cracks etc and needs replacing ....... can imagine it being a nightmare , wasn't 2 bothered on the other car as its a company car but the one that has just been targeted belongs to myself - so i care a little more about this one :)

You can get plates that shatter if tampered with so they are no use to anyone else! This site may give you more info http://www.secureplate.com/Home%20Page.html They should be available at all good accesory shops

also if this has happened 3 times, get the police's crime prevention officer to give you a call to see what anti-tamper/theft methods they recommend.

it might also be worth considering where you are parking, does the location mean its easier for somebody to sneak up on your car and have the plates away without anyone seeing?

best of luck and i hope this will be the last time for you, i can imagine its incredibly frustrating and annoying, as well as inconvenient.

With those shattering plates I can see all the bumpy roads having an adverse effect.

I would suggest just menmtioning this to the police as they may or could be used for something like a getaway car for a robbery or something! sounds daft but it's true!!

In terms of covering yourself in case the plates are used in a theft, robbery or other crime I think it's essential that the plate theft is recorded with the police before anything has a chance to happen with them.

It won't stop it happening but it should mean that the police don't come knocking at 6am and accusing you of whatever has been done in your name. Those shattering plates look like a great idea, but there's nobody who fits them in South Yorkshire, and no stated price for them.

Another reason for reporting it to the police is that it will go down on the Police National Computer, that they check when they pull a car over, and when speeding/other camera fines come in.

If a car of same make and colour, with your plates on, triggers a camera then the fine will come back to you. If the theft is recorded then this is a viable defence.

However, this doesn't mean that everyone should report plates stolen to get out of fines cos its not as simple as that,. but always worth having the fact noted.

yes its called car cloning!! if they have a car which is a Volvo and they want to do naughty things in it, like rob banks ect they'll go out and find a similar car, year, colour ect and pinch the number plates, then there's 2 cars with the same details, more than likely you'll be stopped one day by around 5 cop cars with guns due to a bank robbery!! watch out!!

My son had both his number plates stolen on Tuesday at about 4.30pm, the car was parked on the road, I saw the little sod pull the front one off but could not get out of the house in time to get to him, he jumped into a waiting car and was gone.

Whilst some plates will be used in 'car cloning' lots are simply whacked on cars to avoid speeding fines/detection of petrol theft etc.

Although its clear to the police the plates don't mnatch the car, it will pretty much write off a speed camera ticket - clearly not the car registered to that number, so who do you send the fine to?

ETA - sorry, my point was that it may not be the make and model of car you own, but more about where its parked etc (I appreciate that often there's not much you can do about this!!)

it is not daft it is true, cars with fake plates or stolen plates can be used for anything and if the police are not notified quick enough then its the person who owns the plates will get into trouble. Try and prove to them later that its not you, lol, you will get dragged through every court!:suspect:

I rung the Police and they give us a crime number and said they would be looking out for the number plates.

Until people start posting what the car is, including the specifics then I personally wouldnt want to just say its any old number plate being nicked.

If I was the guy doing it I think I would make a slight effort to nick one from a matching car.

Edit: Starting to think about this. Were I doing it, I would nick several plates from random cars to make up an identical plate to a car type/colour matching mine that I *didnt* nick a plate from.

Edit 2: I think your right. These cameras scanning plates arnt going to flag up inconsistencies with car type/colour. So if you are really going to do it properly, you'd have to know the name and address of the person owning your matching car type steel to pull off a blag if pulled over by a copper.

And of course, should you start speeding about then thats going to send out a warning to the real owner whos then going to tell the police, thus making yourself a target.
... unless you dont speed and just want to avoid paying tax/insurance on your £300 silver Mondeo.

The cameras themselves won't, but the images will be checked. I have a friend who used to work with camera ticketing and any mismatches like this are picked up.

I agree that if I were to do it, I would try to match the plates. But we are probably slightly higher level thinkers than scroates who don't want to pay for their petrol!! And if you can get 3 or 4 sets of plates in an evening, then you can just keep changing them, daily, each time you need petrol or whatever...

I would imagine that if figures were available then it would show that more plates are stolen from the most common cars (vauxhall corsas, and fords if I recall). Hard to use those sorts of figures to suggest car cloning or otherwise really!

Be careful they don't try for the tax disc as well. Number plates and tax discs go hand in hand for such thefts. It happened to me. I phoned the Attercliffe Police and they said it should always be reported to the police. I sent it in writing and received a confirmation from them. Who knows what use these scumbags have in mind when they steal the plates/disc?
