View Full Version : Do You Have An Allergy?

Hi!

I was having a chat with my mate the other day and we noticed that nearly all our friends have an allergy of somekind.

I was just wondering how many people on the forum have an allergy and if so, what is the allergy and how does it affect you?

I just thought it would be interesting to know! :)

Cats - sneezing, swollen eyes

Pollen - see above

Alcohol - skin contact induces a rash

Yup,

Some Pollern allergy - sneezing, running eyes, but less so than even a few years ago.

A nut allergy - not sure which not, though I know it's NOT peanuts or hazelnuts. I think it's walnuts or Brazils, but just to be safe I avoid nuts. If I eat one of teh offending nuts my mouth swells up.

I think that's it!

Johnsons baby lotion, any other brand is ok.

Also a common one, Geraniums or strawberry leaves.
About a year ago I paid for a sensetivity test doing at holland and barrats.

I went as i was having extreme pain in my stomach and diaphram for four years that made me pass out and vomit. I had been going to the doctors about it who kept drawing a blank, and giving me Gaviscon?

Anyway, the test said I was sensitive to loads of things, pectin, tomatoes, all grapes and anything that related to a cow (quite strange as I avoid these things naturally).

Turned out that my gallbladder was about to burst and it had been picked up on a scan but no one informed me. My doctor called me at home after looking at my notes later and admitted me there and then!

Been fantastic ever since.

I have the same alcohol allergy as Strix...doesn't stop me drinking it though! :D

I'm also allergic to shoes! To be more specific...leather ones. Something to do with the glue used on leather and if it comes into to contact with my skin, nasty rash. I have one now :(

I have an allergy to nickel - which means I'm allergic to cheap jewellery! (Not that I'd wear such stuff anyway! :D).

If I was to wear a 9 carat gold chain, for example, within a couple of hours my neck would be itching like mad, and I'd have red marks all round my neck. Lovely!

So I'm restricted to 18 carat and above for gold. Platinum and titanium are fine though !!

StarSparkle :)

PS I've also got an allergy to tomato soup - makes me feel very strange. Also tomato puree - though raw tomatoes and tinned tomatoes are ok. Makes eating pizza a bit of a lottery!

I had allergy tests done as a child and am allergic to pollen, housedust, wool and cats. Some dogs make me itch too. Eggs also make me very sick but are ok if baked in something. (can't eat quiche or omlette etc) I have to be carefull with citrus fruits as they can spark off migraines.

Both my kids had allergies/intollerances as babies. Both had terrible reactions to dairy products and had to have soya milk instead. My son was weaned as a vegan then when I introduced eggs at about 2 years, he had an awfull reaction to eggs also. They both have excema and hayfever too.

I guess we are just an allergic kind of family.

As a child I had a lot of problems with eggs too. Sometimes I was ok eating them, other times I felt really, really ill afterwards. In the end I stopped eating them.

As an adult, I'm better with them and quite enjoy poached eggs now. Still can't bring myself to eat an omelette though!

I have an intolerence to fresh tomatoes and strong citrus. Which means I can eat tomato soup but if I have a pizza with the usual napoli sauce base I get a very saw mouth for a day or two. This isn't life threatening not even sure if it's an alergy, but it's there and irritating. I can eat a nectarine but not a big juicy orange. And if I get a bag of nectarines or any other small orages I can only eat a few of them.

Well I never!!!

I thought that the sensitivity testing I had done wasn't very true. What I didn't realise was that a sensitivity can give you a sore mouth! I get that when I have eaten tomatoes (like the roof of my mouth has been stripped off)

i'm allergic to cats, I never was when I was little but i went out with a boyf who lived with this girls who kept cats, she never hoovered so there was cat hairs everywhere, now my allergy gets worse each time i come into contact with them, it started with just itchy eyes and stuffy nose and now I get breathing problems and my whole body itches within an hour of being around a house with cats.

I have to check before i go into someones house that they don't have them! I'm sure they think i'm being a pain.

I nearly moved back out of my rented flat as the girl who lived here before had cats and I could not breathe well for three weeks, I had my boyf hoovering twice a day to try and get rid of them. I want to buy a house soon and I'm gonna have to make sure that the owners don't own cats or all the carpets are removed before I move in!

Bonny that's exactly how my mouth feels after a tomato.

They are the worst food of all for me. But not if they're well cooked for some reason. If I buy a ready made sandwich and there's a bit of tomato inside which I didn't notice, then I get the same problem. Tomato Ketchup never gives me any trouble, or chilli with lots of tomato paste. I cannot eat tinned fruit their juice, some people eat a desert with tinned fruit, and I have to avoid that too as I get a sore mouth, although If the same stuff is set in a trifle I have no problem.

I also get hayfever, but only every other year. Never been able to work out why that is.

I have a fair few allergies.

trainers and most types of shoes. but not doc martens. there the only ones that dont make my feet come out in blisters and horrible spots and it itches like hell but my feet calm down after a while of wearing them, buying new trainers is a ****en nightmare tho!
plasters, the material type ones make my hands (or wherever they are) come out in a rash like the one my feet get with new shoes.
pots like what you get when you brake your arm. when i fractured my hand they couldnt put a pot on it or a bandage (allergic to them too) so they had to use tubigrip and a split, not pleasent!
eggs always make me feel very sick when eating them but iv never actually been told that its an allergy
glitter makes me sneeze, my eyes puff up and if it gets on my skin i get a similar rash to my feet
insect bites. firstly i seem to attract insects from every where, my skin is like insect attracter and using the repellent seems to make it worse. when i get bitten i get big red hives and my legs swell. iv got the scars to prove it!

my allergies are all pretty gross!

I'm also allergic to alcohol (beer, wine and cider) which brings me out in a rash if i have a bit, if i ignore it and keep drinking i start wheezing too, fun!!
I'm allergic to dogs but not cats (i live with a dog - woohoo!!) and have seriously bad hayfever from april/may to september.
I also occasionally have bad reactions to red coloured food, and sometimes react to latex too so have to be careful with plasters, elastic in clothes, etc etc.
I'm not allergic to dairy, but i do find it makes my hayfever/ excema better if i cut it out for a while :suspect:

I'm allergic to fibreglass not just the stuff in attics but untreated fibreglass body work. When I first left school I started work as an apprentice plumber and I had the worst achene in the world, took ages and loads of different creams and lotions before I found out it was Fibreglass I was allergic to.:(

I have allergies to food colurings too em, especially E102 (tartrazine) which is an orangey-red colouring. It used to be used in lots of stuff, sweets, orange squash, cheese, cosmetics and shower gel, was even fed to chickens to make their egg yolks more yellow. It is not so widely used any more, and is banned in several countries, but not the UK yet.

I recently discovered what it is made from - it is a by-product of coal tar aparently! nice!
When I was little it gave me excema, now it gives me sore eyes and migraines.

But co-op have recently banned it from all their products!

Have you ever been told which red food colouring it is you are allergic too em?

My little brother is also allergic to tartrazine, it made him hyperactive for hours, imagine the poor teachers at school after they had insisted in feeding him lemon meringue pie!!!!
I've worked out by process of elimination that its E124 mainly, but I react to things like tandoori chicken and sweet n sour if I buy them from a takeaway, I just have to be really careful now and tend to cook all my own food so I know exactly whats gone into it!

I went to Holland & Barrats (is that how you spell it) they have someone there from time to time. They also picked up that I had a serious magnesium defficiency and I had to go to the doctors about that to get it sorted. They asked me if I had been getting muscle spasms, which was quite wierd as all the way through the test my face was twitching severley and had been for about a month. This was caused by the lack of magnesium.

If you give them a call they can tell you when they are next having one there. I think it cost around £80 for the full test.

I'm allergic to Nickel (well I assume it's nickel). A few years ago I suddenly came out in really nasty swollen rash whenever I wore cheap metal. I can now only wear gold, silver, surgical steel, plantinum or the rare range of hypoallergic jewellery makes when I can find them. It's really annoying because even belt buckles and buttons on jeans bring me out in rashes so whenever I wear jeans I have to sew material over the button or put nail varnish on it. Good job I wear contacts as I couldn't wear my glasses anymore unless I buy plastic frame ones.

Also allergic to certain shell fish like mussels. Really annoying as used to love them but now make me violently sick. Can still eat other fish like prawns, lobster, crab. I miss mussels.

Allergic to coconut and any products with it in like soaps and shampoos. Makes me ill and brings out a rash rather than a anaphyllatic nut allergy.

Allergic to some perfumes, have no idea what ingredient. Really annoying when someone at work sprays or someone walks past in the street with really strong perfume on. Makes me sneeze and eyes water. Worst nightmare, when sat on bus or in theatre and someone sits next to me with strong perfume on.

I too have a cat fur allergy, itchy skin, watery eyes, Darth Vader respiratory wheeze.
Whenever I used to go to my big sister's house when I was a kid (she had 2 cats) my histemine would be off the chocks!
She got really cross & accused me of
'putting-it-on-for-attention'
... women :loopy:

When I worked in A/E, 'have you any allergies'
was a standard triage question.

YOU WOULD NOT BELIEVE how many funny & original people said work, the wife, the kids, etc ... yawn.
I quickly learned to ask 'have you ever had a reaction to medicines or sticking plaster?'
So be warned all you would-be comics.
Hospital staff have heard them all before. Many times.
They're not funny & never have been!

That said there are many people who feel obliged to be allergic to something . Often it would be penicillin.
When quizzed as to what had happened when they took it you'd get 'I don't know I've never had any - but my grandma was allergic to it' :loopy:
or you'd just get 'antibiotics' :?
'which ones?' ... ''dunno'' .... 'what happens?'
... 'diarrhoea' ....
side effect, not necessarily an allergy.

Not really ranting :suspect: TTFN xxx

I can't eat brazil nuts, walnuts, hazelnuts. Here's the weird bit: I can eat bountys but not raw coconut and I can eat marzipan which I think is made from almonds  Also some bananas have a similar but less potent effect. I just avoid all nuts here poss and all foreign chocolate

aww, must suck liking cats so much but being allergic to them :( cats are the cutest pets ever, well maybe on parr with a nice cute bunny! :D

cheese... ewwww... cheese is disgusting anyways, I've not eaten cheese since i was about 4yrs old :?

My personal allergies:

garlic: Not as bad as it used to be, any trace of garlic in food, and I mean trace, would make me vomit for hours... you know how many foods contain bits of garlic, like chicken nuggets, some burgers etc? that was an ass!... but now my stomach can handle a little bit, but if if somethings got a fair bit of garlic in I can expect anything from a little hot flush upto a fever and vommiting :?

when I first started dating my ex g/f she cooked me a meal with one of those dolmio bolognase source's... about 30mins after eating the dinner her parents were ready to rush me to hospital because I had a really bad fever come along, I went to sleep and didn't wake for about 14hrs :? garlic = EVIL!

oh I'm also allergic to wearing silver, especially in my ears, I dont have any piercings at the moment due to having a few REALLY bad infections when I was a bit younger due to not realising it was an allergy to silver :? although I've heard silver allergies are something to do with the minerals usually contained in it?

I don't have a problem with garlic, but also have a very bad reaction to Dolmio sauces. (My prob's with tomatoes). Not as extreme a reaction as yours, Xafier, but I do feel very strange and not at all well after eating Dolmio. Now I've realised the effect, I avoid them like the plague!

The problem you have with wearing silver could be a nickel allergy? I suffer from that as well, and have to take a lot of care choosing earrings! (18 carat gold's fine!! )

I get Hay Fever so am allergic to tree pollen. My worst month of the year is June and May/July are usually a bit sneezy too but it's got better in the last few years. Last year I only had one bad sneezing fit (about 50 sneezes in a row) so it's much better than when I was a kid. Also certain breeds of cat give me itchy eyes, runny nose and sneezes. I prefer dogs anyway. :)

I was ill about 6 months ago for three weeks with stomach problems and after tests and a gastroscopy I've become allergic to pasta and other things like Pringles and spaghetti. Gutted but no major loss. Doc thinks I am a Coeliac but I've yet to ring up and get test results.

Those are my allergies. Better than some I'd imagine and certainly liveable with. :)

EDIT: Just called the Doc and apparently my results came back as normal  so apparently I'm not a Coeliac after all. I guess I'm just allergic to pasta. At least I can still eat rice. :D

I have been patch tested at the hallamshire for my allergies as work were concerned the red itchy rash might be related to work.
It turns out that I have an allergy to Nickel, so all silver looking cheap jewellery is a no-no. Silver coins, buckles , you name it if it looks silvery, it brings me out in a rash. Apparently german silver has a high percentage of nickel in it so in theory I can wear silver jewellery as long as it's not german.
Also I have a longer delay reaction to a preservative that is found in many household products. Basically anything that makes bubbles is a candidate, so I have to read the ingredients on the washing up liquid, washing powder, soap, shampoo--I'm sure you get the picture.
The only thing they can give me to treat the allergy is a steroid cream that thins the skin so has to be used very sparingly, so I have to rely on barrier cream to avoid contact.
I've found out that the best thing about being pregnant is that I haven't had a single flare up. I was worried, cos I can't use the steroid cream if I do have a reaction.
It'll be interesting to see if it comes back after baby is born!!

That's really interesting to hear about German silver having a high nickel content - I wasn't aware of that at all.

Could explain a lot for me - some silver necklaces I've no probs wearing at all, others bring me out in a rash as soon as look at them! I never did understand that .....

Must be a nightmare for you poor people with allergies to metal. But I was thinking in the shower this morning (as you do!) - What about shaving?! Do you have to wax etc or is the minimal time of contact to a razor ok? Or is the type of metal of a razor ok?

I waited 2 years for my doctor to refer me to the hallamshire, and then about 6 months for an appointment. It was brilliant to actually know what I was allergic to though, as the doc had been telling me all sorts, fungal infections, not washing properly at work, that sort of thing. It really brings you down mentally cos you know there's something wrong, but when the doc tells you otherwise, you have to go with their opinion.
I think some health food stores will do food allergy testing, and some of the chinese herbalists also offer allergy testing. Personally I would ask for a referral from GP (and be persistent! it might take a long time but it's worth it.) as the hallamshire is a leading institute in allergy research.
The patch testing for contact allergies is horrible as you are not allowed to wash the area being tested (usually your back) for a week, and you are deliberately irritating the skin. I finished my testing the day before xmas eve and immediately went home to spend two hours lying down in the bath (but unfortunately without bubbles!!)

I've got hayfever, always thought I might have but wasnt confirmed until about 3 years ago when optician fitted me with contact lenses and said I had little bumps under eyelids which is one symptom.

Allergic to peanuts, itchy and make me vom

Also found out recently Im allergic to cashew nuts, passed out and vom'd for ages, which was not fun.

Just curious if Im now allergic to most nuts now, which is a shame as I love hazelnuts n can quite happily sit n eat a jar of Nutella. Dont really want to find out the hard way by being badly ill but do think forking out about £80 for a test is a bit OTT!!!!

You'd think if Lloyds pharmacy do free blood sugar tests and cheap cholesterol tests they'd do allergy checks???

I've wondered whether allergies are on the increase as I never used to hear of them. But it may be because I have only recently been interested that I have become more aware of them.

If I get bitten by a midgie or mosquito it comes up as a huge lump and blisters....I need to take antihistamines to control the swelling....

I have an allergy that makes my hair turn grey and fall out.

My babies :D

Seriously though, I'm indestructible, me. Apart from that time I got hit over the head with a metal dustpan, but we'll not go there... :suspect:

Yes I do..... but they are ordinary and boring.

I was more interested to hear of someones allergy to fish - every so often cod gives me 'fish bumps' in my mouth. Never thought anything of it until one night in a restaurant whilst eating cod my throat started to swell and constrict. Was worried for a while....
And peoples reactions to eggs....
Maybe it's not a coincidence that through my life I have had major 'off eating' periods of both fish and eggs where it can make me feel queasy to eat them.

The ordinary boring ones (on and off, not all the time) dust, pollen, cat, dog, possibly milk.

Quite surprised how many folk are allergic to nickel.

I had patch tests at a Derby hospital some years ago now, due to recurrent severe bronchitis (so severe at times, it necessitated injections to assist me to breath). Turned out I was allergic to cat, dog and horse hair. A year after my allergy diagnosis, I took the kids (then quite young) to Majorca. We took a 30 minute horse and carriage ride around the resort after checking into the hotel. Although I never touched the horse, by the end of the carriage ride, my face was swollen and my eyes had closed. I was having severe breathing difficulties, and could not walk. Got a taxi back to the hotel, where an emergency doctor was summoned. Spent next 3 days in bed recovering.

I always avoid cats and dogs, never stroke or touch them, and I never, ever go anywhere near a horse!

amoxycillin is similar to penicillin, iirc. if you are allergic to penicillin, you will react to that. (i am allergic to penicillin, as are/ were both my parents)

it's not necessarily the zinc on the zinc ozide platers that you are reacting to, it may be the adhesive. I react to sticking-plasters, so, if i have blood tests etc done, I ask for micropore tape over the site, instead. (i was told that the zinc oxide was put on the plaster, to buffer the person's skin against the adhesive on it! this may be an urban legend...)

I am also allergic to eggs. i get terrible stomach ache if i have almost anything that is egged. which is a bane, cos i can't have proper mayonnaisse, or coleslaw/ potato salad (mayo , and by association coleslaw etc, contains egg). i love my mayonnaisse, too!

I have to buy a vegan mayo, which is not a bad substitute for the real thing.

i do get hay fever, as well, (gosh, I sound like a total wreck!)

I'm allergic to nickel, as well. Wasn't always, though. Same thing with ibuprofen.

I don't have any pollen / fur / nut allergies (to my knowledge) but I am allergic to cosmetics containing zinc - mainly just a few sunscreens. I'm slightly allergic to root ginger as well (it makes my throat feel slightly swollen) but it doesn't stop me eating it!!

I'm allergic to:

Pollen
Cats
Nickel (and for the question about shaving, I have huge problems with this, have to pay for waxing as shaving brings me out in a rash all over my legs :gag: )
Fish - it makes me really sick, even the smell

I also have nasty eczema and rosacea on my face which basically means I can't use any cosmetic products that contain a lot of alcohol.

My dad is a lot worse though, he had a test done a while back and turns out he's allergic to loads of things including common fabrics and cement powder (not good considering he's a builder :( )

My only allergy has been to work. It always made me feel depressed and wishing I were somewhere else, - a bit surprised I'm still here after forty+ years of it.

But I don't have to do it anymore and am feeling much better :D

ErythromIiycin
Amoxycillin
Septrin
Penicillin

All discovered when i went through a bout of tonsilitis as a child. Apparently i'd had a very bad reaction to penicillin given to me as a young baby when i had an operation but this had got lost in the mound of notes somewhere. I don't remember much about it but i remember feeling incredibly poorly and feeling much worse and dreading my Gran taking me to the docs the next day to say it hadn't worked.

Asthma
Set off by dust and laughing! I've trained myself to chuckle rather than guffaw and i do this sid james type laugh but when i completely loose it I sound like Muttley from Dastardly and Muttley!

[QUOTE=StarSparkle]I have an allergy to nickel - which means I'm allergic to cheap jewellery!

StarSparkle :)[QUOTE=StarSparkle]

Yep me too it is horrible, I can only wear expensive stuff its a pain to be honest, I come out in great big red spots that itch like hell. I once had my belly button peirced, I chaged the bar for a really pretty one someone bought me and it started to itch a bit and then a few days later it worked its way all the way through my skin and popped out and I had a big scar, I have learned my lesson now though.

Leeks and cabbages make my face go itchy and swell up, usually accompanied by throwing up etc. Easily avoided - I just don't eat them :gag:

Wasp stings give me the full anaphylactic thing - blue lips, can't breath, convinced the world's about to end and so on. Bit scary, so I usually spend the summer with a big fat adrenaline pen in my pocket. A small cross to bear in the grand scheme of things, really :)
