View Full Version : Hello everyone... help me by posting a comment! - FLOOD REPARATION
fox20thc 09-07-2007, 23:52 tis Foxy from the parish of Winn. Basically the Don is (insert your own expletive) and blocked... not only for Winn but large portions of the city. I want to raise this with local and national government and your support would be lovely.

Why does it always rain on me..... Genius! :D
EDIT: On a serious note, well done Foxy, that's a beautifully put together montage. I drove past the Riverside complex on Saturday and the river was in a right state with trees and other rubbish all over. It's going to take a lot of time and effort to fix.
fox20thc 10-07-2007, 00:03 My riverbank, my community, my family..... our fun times............... S... H.. one .. tee... my kids were mortified when they saw that river...
:(
fox20thc 10-07-2007, 00:19  "masked swearing" response.
Its not bloody (sorry) hard! The more I can take to the MPs the better!
edit: GazE amended his retort
I'm still d/l it. lol. Excuse my 56k connection. :)
Will comment on the video on the other thread.
I just wanted to say that, it is staggering what water can do. When I went down to Winn Gardens with Mr "Andy with the Van", we drove past the River Don near Leppings Lane. There was a huge tree on the road. It is just mind boggling to see the power of water. I didn't understand how it can be washed up so high, over the bridge, and onto the road. A section of the road was sectioned off.
We also drove to the Oughtibridge area for a pick up. We could still see water trickling from the road. Still draining away, and that was a day or so after I think. A section of that A road was unstable as well.
I've also been to Meadowhall this Sat too, and noticed that all shops are closed downstairs. My friend then drove us past Brightside Lane to get back to town. All the areas were sectioned, and the Wicker was changed so much from what I can remember...
You see floods and such natural disasters on tv, and it is always at the back of your mind, it is like a story. Yet, when it is in your life, and in front of you, it is kind of surreal. I can't believe the power of water. I can't comprehend it, at all. I know that my families are lucky to live near the South of Sheffield, and away from the river.
If the cause is indeed drainage, then I truly hope that the local government will indeed clear it, or to make sure all drainage do work. I know that sections of the river near new apartments are being cleaned here and there, for regeneration purposes, but I certainly hope that it gets done throughout the whole river, and such things do not happen again.
I couldn't believe it when they offered up the sum of £14m. It would cover the costs in one flood damaged village, but for an entire region? It's like giving someone tuppence and saying: ''There you go, get yourself a new car.''

I read it! :hihi::) I'm going to blush soon.
I remember what you said to me, and I think you have done well for your family by picking yourself up and just going with it.
Anyway, to add, I've also spoken to quite a few ex-colleagues who do live in the Hillsborough areas, and they were left without electricities too. To also have the whole area without lights on the road, and alarms going off like a dead town, is very surreal. I don't think people who live outside of Sheffield realised the extent of the flood. A lot of the news coverage was on very early morning, and only at Look North as well. I manage to see Brightside Lane and the cars all crashed into a pile. It's very mind boggling.
A friend also work in an office on Brightside Lane, and I was glad that they were told to evacuate and go home early. As the level reached their lower office window. I've seen the riverline on the map and the Wicker was the middle point of a few rivers. I really really hope that the drainage do get improved!

 not quick enough on the draw was I :P
Well I hope everyone will post constructive comment on how we can move forward and how we can fix the river, else we are just sitting around waiting for the next big rain :(
Ms Macbeth 10-07-2007, 08:06 I hope the government and affected councils look at the big picture. Sort out the waterways, clean out drains, improve road drainage, don't give planning permission to build new houses below sea level and all the other things that Joe Public would consider to be common sense.
Although for some people the events of the last few weeks have been extremely difficult, the way strangers as well as friends have rallied to help one another is worth a mention. So many acts of goodwill have happened, my faith in human nature is almost restored. (It would have been 100%, but for the looters! Stiff sentences please for anyone nicking from flooded properties.)
Alastair 10-07-2007, 08:09 Should this thread be in the flood section or the Sheffield section where it will get more attention?

Erm.. I dont want it buried in the flood section because not everyone goes there. I want people to see what has been left behind, the next step is to find out who is going to repair the riverbank.
We all saw the water but once that subsided lots of people think that's an end to it, which isn't the case, the flood has left a legacy behind which not only affects the people but the environment and nature too.
No this isn't SPAM :D

At the back of my estate, the other side is by whats left of Claywheels lane. Hillsborough
I havent been able to access the video yet (other half must be running some painfully slow process, grrr) but dont doubt from others comments that this is a serious issue- another serious incident waiting to happen. What can we do to push the Envirnomental Agency to get it sorted? Surely in their interst, the interest of insurers, businesses and all to make sure this does not happen again (or that when it does, it does not cause the degree of devastation recently witnessed).
Classic Rock 10-07-2007, 10:22 By all means lobby your MP about this, but I think your first stop needs to be British Waterways who are responsible for all rivers and canals in the country. This is who your MP would approach to find a solution.

There's a link in this site to a complaints procedure and it can navigate you to the relevant office who can assist you.
You're BACK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :Dlike a bad penny...
After viewing the footage last night....couldn't sleep....hence my over emotional posts on this and the other thread concerning this.....
I went down to the weir to look for myself today.....it is a tragic sight....the pond above the weir was upsetting too.....full of the trees that were uprooted from the claywheels side.....there are two trees hanging on for dear life as the soil underneath them has been washed away.....the riverbank that was restored some years ago has gone....the river is now as wide as the pond itself. This is going to be one mammoth clear up and restoration job.
And as I trudged through what used to be undergrowth and vegitation on the other side of the path....now all flattened....a lonely plant stood, leaves and buds absorbing the sunlight it possibly had been sheltered from before and it occurred to me as I stood there that it will take time but in time most of the damage will repair itself....it just needs a little help from us humans. :D
14 million is a paultry sum considering what is being spent on the olympics. It's time this and future governments started to sort out the failing infrastructure of this country before spending money on bling projects like the olympics.
Just looked at your footage fox.......what can I say.
We were away when this happened so didn't realise the gravity of the situation.
All we were moaning about was the Nat Ex coach refusing to take us home from E.M.A.
I feel very humble looking at your footage especially as we live on high ground so weren't affected.
I agree that this footage should go national but it all seems to be about Hull now.
Well done to everybody who helped.
Blacksheep 10-07-2007, 16:40 Sorry not to leave anything constructive but shouldn't this be in the flood thread? I know the floods affected some people really bad but if the post is in the right place the right people will read it. Soz.
Sorry not to leave anything constructive but shouldn't this be in the flood thread?
I take it you didn't read this post (http://www.sheffieldforum.co.uk/showthread.php?t=235414#12)?
fox20thc 10-07-2007, 17:22 I take it you didn't read this post (http://www.sheffieldforum.co.uk/showthread.php?t=235414#12)? it worked anyway

Yeah i did, and i may come across as a heartless sod but i don't want to read flood posts all the time.
There's a place for it and it ain't here surely?
Sorry you were badly affected in Winn but tell it to the people who want to read it.
fox20thc 10-07-2007, 17:29 Its about reparation of the river banks and seeing how they have been damaged. people are concerned that they are trashed, not a pity party for winn
Kristian 10-07-2007, 17:31 Mod: Okay, back to topic now please.
bloom1961 10-07-2007, 20:33 I live on Leppings Lane the council worked for 4 days pulling full trees with roots out of the river and from under the bridge but there is still loads of broken branches ect still on the bank. On the side of the wed ground there are still large amounts of debris still in water in piles and broken trees still on the banking all this still needs moving as if we have rain like we did when the flood happened all this debris will just get washed down river to block another bridge

Mentalmomma 10-07-2007, 21:01 It's the same on the 88 bus route to town, water marks and debris all over showing how bad it was, but to many now it's past so we're unfortunately forgotten about!
