Hi there. I came past The Ball at about 1-00pm this afternoon and the front door was closed which is not usual. Just been speaking to someone (5-00pm)
and he told me he had just come past and the door is still closed plus all the curtains apart from one downstairs which is partly open with two blokes looking out, anyone know anything? If it has closed down it will be another sad time really, this along with The Elm Tree, The Woodthorpe and The Travellers City Road were, many years ago all good pubs, but unfortunately pub life has changed and I must say in my opinion not for the good. The way things are going there won't be any pubs left in Sheffield apart from as someone has said on another thread, Weatherspoons, and they can't be called proper pubs and this will be sad. For anyone who know's it, look at the mess they have made of The Birley at Frecheville. The people that decide these pubs should be altered would be better spending a few days in the pub talking to the regulars and ask what they want. Sorry gone off the subject, is The Ball closed is how this thread started.

Apparently there are on average 3 pubs a week closing in and around the Sheffield area, the highest figure for the country. I think this is due to people drinking at home more as it's cheaper.

Sadly, I feel it will only get worse! What's happened at the Birley Sparky2, I drove past there the other day and it seemed very busy. I know they were having a refurbishment, has the character of the pub changed?

I thought the Birley looked quite good! A lot mire inviting than it did look!

I live close by the Birley and have used it all my life, which I'm afraid to say is a long, long time. The Birley was very much in need of smartening up but every regular who I have spoken too has agreed they have ripped the heart out of it. It's always been a good drinking pub but not anymore it has been changed more into a eating house. I and many more think that there are enough pubs round this area where you can get a good meal, The Sherwood is straight across the road, but all the proper pubs with lounge and tap room are fast becoming extinct. The Birley has always had a good lounge with live shows quizes etc and you could also get a bar meal. It was almost full nearly everynight but it had fast become a dump because they hadn't spent any money on doing it up and that's all it needed. They should have left well alone "If it isn't broken don't mend it". it's a big shame, the Sherwood now gets my money.

The hollin bush is still a good, old traditional pub with a lounge and a tap room. It's a good pint as well!!!

I couldn't agree more, just a big shame that everyday as you travel about you see more and more pubs with the "To Let" sign outside, and once that's in place it seems that it's not long before the shutters start going up because whoever is running the place has no interest and whoever owns it starts loosing money so they close it. very sad.

The hollin bush has just changed hands, but the new owners seem to have the same idea of ' if it's not broke don't fix it', and have pretty much kept things the same up to now. Apart from the opening and closing times have been extended, but that can't be a bad thing!!!!!

Hackenthorpe Social Club is now a pub, but to my thinking they have taken too much on, it is a vast place to heat and light. I called in one afternoon last week and there were about 10 people in and the nights are from what I have heard a bit short of "bums on seats" they are going to have to do better than that to make a go of it, but I wish them luck, I hate to see these sort of places close.
