Whereabouts on Ecclesall Road? There's a few empty buildings and it would be good to see them put to use again.

I reckon there are very few asylum seekers who are Buddhists!!
Most of them in this country are middle class white people looking to chill after a hard day at the office!

anyway its better thanhaving Joho's there isnt it?

The trouble with forums such as these is that things can get lost in translation, but are you completely ignorant or just having a laugh? i can't work out which... :)

How can people have anything against buddhists? They are peaceful, non-dogmatic, gentle folk. Buddhists come from all walks of life and backgrounds and like the correspondent above, most of the buddhists I know are white and middle class.

There's a lot of knee jerk reactions on this forum from people who would get a lot more from life if they took the time to understand stuff before reacting.

The misperception of Buddhist’s as being people who hug trees is all too common. While there is of course an exception to every rule, Buddhist’s generally have a concern for the environment based on the theory of interconnectedness (a theory which is borne out by both common-sense and modern science).

The misperception of Buddhist’s as asylum seekers is just plain laughable and is based on a degree of ignorance I can hardly believe (as is the notion that Eccelesall road is Dore!)

I’m not sure what a demographic survey of Buddhist practitioners in the UK would reveal, and I wouldn’t necessarily disagree with the suggestion that the majority are middle-class, but in my experience a large number are simply working class people.

Hey I watched changing rooms this morning and it was from a Buddist centre in Sheffield! Lawrence did a bedroom, which i thought was a bit naff, but the other guy did a really cool dining room. The people on the programme were really nice too.

Sorry if that was a bit off topic, Just thought id mention it, as you were...

I like the idea of a Buddhist centre. Of all the world's religions, I find Buddhism the most appealing. If or when it opens, I may give it a try out of curiosity.

If you go here (http://www.fwbosheffield.org/) the Buddhist Centre in Walkley looks very much open for "business"!!

They do short introduction to meditation courses and are wonderful, peace-loving, non-evangelical people!

"always a bit wary of these kinds of things and a bit pricey!!!"

A girl I work with goes to the centre in Walkley - it's very much open. I asked about going along to the meditation bit and they charge £40 for the full introduction course - which I think is about 6-8 weeks. After that the attendance is free - though attendees are able to offer donations to help keep the centre running - but aren't pressured to do so.

Apparently a lot of people go there for meditation but not to practise the religion - and you are free to take up whatever aspect you like - all very chilled out!

:)
