View Full Version : Bathroom flooring

Right, in order to save an otherwise lovely relationship, I am calling out for help on that most important of issues, bathroom flooring.
I've pretty much got him convinced that carpet is disgustingly unhygenic in a bathroom.
He will not allow bathroom-quality laminate flooring in case there is a problem and it all has to be ripped up to get to the pipes.
His eyes roll back in his head and he froths at the mouth at the mention of vinyl flooring.
He reckons tiles will be too heavy and drop us into the kitchen below, bath and all
Bare floorboards will allow water to leak through
I'm not sure I could stand cork tiles (shudder)
The vinyl tiles have a tendency to peel away at the edges and look grotty after a year or so.

PLEASE HELP! I've totally run out of ideas....

I personally would suggest vinyl flooring.

My sister-in-law has just got some "luxury cusion flooring" from a carpet shop on Queens oad that is closing down -as well as a living room carpet!

Perhaps you could rename it like the above. I would go for the tiles because of what you have already stated - I agree with the laminate bit too. Don't know about cork tiles.

What about that sea grass stuff? It looks carpety but it's not. I think it's called sea grass anyway, I always see it on the DIY shows. It looks good and is much more hygenic than a carpet but not dangerous as a slippery vinyl or lamanate floor.

I'm not sure it is more hygienic, it must be even harder to clean, surely? With men in the house, you really want to be able to wipe around the toilet easily with a mop.:x
Fashion-wise, though, I'd love sea grass.

Which carpet shop, Moon? I drive Queens Road every day - I could pop in...check out their 'quality cushion flooring'

Found this link for you, it's not brill but it gives you an idea of what seagrass looks like.

Mmm, Steelblade, stop tempting me!

I think it would rot underneath from all those man-misses-loo moments. I've tried laying one of those loo-carpets under the toilet to stop the pee seeping into the current carpet (not my idea - there when we bought the house, EEEWWW) but that is definitely something I would like to get rid of now.

Coincidentally, we're having our bathroom done soon and we've opted for tiles. They've a nice selection at STC in Dinnington. I'm looking forward to the change as we currently have carpet and it does seem a trifle un-hygienic.

There was a German landlord earlier this year who insisted that male tenants had to put up an increased deposit due to the radiators in the bathroom being more likely to rust when men occupied the flats? You can guess why.

The rest of the house is stripped floorboards, which we love. But He seems to think that if I overflowed the bath (again:blush: ) it would cause serious structural damage to the house. I can see why he thinks it would leak through between the tiles...have you never had that happen, huwj?
I'd personally love stone tiles, but he honestly does think we'd end up in the kitchen. Maybe if I got a flooring person to have a word with him, it'd convince him otherwise.

An expensive option but one I like the idea of has to be something I saw on one of those changing rooms programmes (yes I sometimes watch them).
They ripped out the bathroom floow and installed a grate type feature. All the flooring sloped towards the centre of the room, where (with the art of plumbing) a grate for all the water to wash away had been placed.

After this some very fine holed, but extremely strong wire meshing was fitted over the grate to make a level floor.

Afterwards some fine gravel was spread over the entire bathroom floor and the gravel was soft enough to just walk around on without hurting the feet at all.

The bath was stripped away and basially the shower water ran straight onto the floor, through the gravel and meshing, into the grate and through to the drain pipes outside.

Your whole room became like a shower... excellent idea. Worked too. And whenever the flooring needed a clean, from all the dirt you wash off. Simple... hose pipe, or other watering device, some gentle bleach and/or bathroom cleaning fluid and the jobs a good un!

Not cheap mind, but looks well good!

Thanks, DB I can just see that working in a semi-dilapidated Victorian terrace
My Dad has one of those walk-in shower bathrooms...it's great - just shower everything down once a week to get it all clean again.
Only problem is keeping your towels dry

It is called Carpet Kingdom - just past Skating rink, past big B&Q. Inbetween poundstrecthers and Netto aparently.

Good luck!

My choice would be ceramic tiles anyday, but they are expensive, you will have no problems with the floor supporting it, the only thing you need is plywood underneath to make the floor flat. Get a tiler to do it to make a good job.

I have just had some really good cushion floor fitted in my hall and it is non slip, so no problem when getting out of the bath, it looks like real wood flooring its great.

You may all yet save this marriage before it even happens
Thanks, and keep the good ideas coming.

You could always try suggesting the following reasons

If we have carpet I will get carpet burns when I reward you for the hard work done in the bathroom.

If we have the tiles done, it will be cold on your back when I flip you over

If we have cork board then you/I will get bits stuck up bum and that could be really uncomfortable !!

If we have luxury cushion flooring we may stain it whilst exploding with pashion!!

:o

Use as you wish depending on which ones you don't want - you know how your fella works

...or put him a bucket down the garden and tell him to use that, so you can have whatever floor you like

We're going to have a look at the flooring shop you suggested, Moon Maiden.
Tho this morning he seemed to be erring towards tiles despite the fear of cold toes in winter.
Last night he was back onto carpets, but I managed to beat the idea out of him

Tell him if you have a carpet he can scrub the pee stains out of it by hand!!!

I have stripped floorboards that have been sealed so no water can be absorbed into the cracks and then painted, I have a large rug over them from Laura Ashley 11ft X 10 ft with about 4 foot exposed all they way around and everyone says they look stunning :-) this is what I would do again :-) Lovies ~ Angel

You can get under floor heating for tiles which comes on a roll and is quite easy to install.

I'm sure you'll all be delighted:lol: to know that we have agreed on BOTH flooring and wall tiles.
Flooring: slate tiles. Proper ones :D (what I wanted)

Lesson for all girls: if he sees a tool he desperately wants in the shop, let him buy it. Especially if it is a rotozip thingy and cuts tiles. The very next day after I let him buy the thing, he suddenly became insistent on slate tiles.
It's all too easy sometimes...

PS bathtub and toilet installed...slight glitch with sink. Then ALL we have to do is strip the woodchip and start tiling...oh goody. Why can't I just wave a magic wand?

This doesn't look like an agreement more like a stitch up. Congratulations Cosy.

We're just in the process of getting a quote for much the same thing. If you'd been in STC at Dinnington on Sunday you would have seen partner & I pouring water on various floor tiles to see which ones were least slippy. We've gone for porcelain, btw.

Isn't it nice to know you're not alone...
We don't have anyone to suggest, I'm afraid, cos we tend to get things done by the 'it's who you know' route. A colleague has done the plumbing work (he's an ex-plumber) mostly for hot dinners. We're going to attempt the tiling ourselves, but under the all-knowing eye of a neighbour who used to do it professionally. Less expensive, but I reckon I'll be paying in nerves  :o
We've done the floor-tile dance too. How nice it is divided by likelihood of joining the all-bathroom wet-floor-skiing team, lol. The slate is very rough, not smooth and polished so I'm happy. But some of the flooring we've seen is a deathtrap!
BTW the place we've gone for all the tiles is Tiles Direct just off Chesterfield Road/Little London Road (opposite Dunelm Mills). 30% off the price if you ask. Tried Porcelanosa, but they were so snotty we left, laughing openly at their unbelievable lack of customer service skills (tho it's quite possible we just weren't up to their 'standard' of customer:lol: )

I'm in a Victorian terrace house too Cosywolf. I had my bathroom done a few months ago and have had the floor tiled, no problem.. Don't forget, these houses were built to last!!

I can recommend the guy who did mine. He also does laminate floor laying - if that's what you go for. Personally I love the ceramic tiled floor for cleanliness and looks.

Luckily, we are an all-female household so no nasty near misses on the wee front here! :gag:

PS - we had the underfloor heating too and its FAB!!! My daughter just lays on it wrapped in towels when she gets out of the shower and dries! The dogs always make a bee-line for it too!!! We got ours from the Tile Depot down near Meadowhall. They are very helpful and not at all pushy and will work everything out for you. Recommend them!

I have ceramic tiles too on my bathroom floor and can recommend them. Much more hygenic than carpets and they look good too. I can't see how they can be too heavy, unless there is something wrong with your floorboards, as their weight is spread across the whole floor. I have all of my bathroom walls tiled from top to bottom too. They are easy to clean and again look good as well
