Hi , I have to have my teeth sorted out before i can go ahead with my much needed hip replacement, as any kind of tooth problem can cause germs to infect the new hip etc.
My problem is that I can not find any that do nhs but if anyone could recommend a brilliant one -private, and could inform me of dental cost treatment etc then i would be grateful.
Also when i went for my pre assessment for the hip op I was told by a nurse
that she thought my jaw was disslocated. my left side of jaw creaks and cracks very loud indeed and has done this ever since i had a wisdom tooth out at charles cliffords dental hosp a couple of years ago. But i didnt realise before that it could be dislocated. This is another problem which will add to the dentist treatment. But the hospital nurse told me to tell the dentist and he may xray it.
The hip op is imminant possibly some time this month so i dont know how i am going to get all this treatment done before then.I also am terrified of dentists. Ive had a few side teeth out during my adult years but will not have fillings. This stems from terrible memories when i was 9 of running out of a dentist surgery during the drilling of my tooth. This was back in 1968 69 ish.
And ive had this drill phobia/terror fear. ever since.
Can anyone give any info.

ps The only nhs one i can find is one on shiregreen lane, folley or someone. Does anyone use this Dentist.
Im in Stocksbridge but no one is accepting either part charge or no charge nhs, here or anywhere near.
Ive also been on the wesite and scanned through them all in sheffield .
And some Barnsley.

To be honest you would need to ring them, I would not want to hazzard a guess.
Wizdom teeth removed were about £100, my last filling was £80. I doubt that helps though!

Don't forget that private charges also seem to vary enormously. I am also a member of his scheme where I pay £8/month and get a free checkup / scale and polish and 20% off all work.

There is a dentist open at Fairlawns health center in Middlewood. They are NHS but you are treated by students who are fully supervised.

Just thought you'd be interested - I had all 4 wisdom teeth removed at 16 years of age. Afterwards, my jaw cracked all the time and on occaision would get stuck in one position for a few minutes, which was awkward if I had a mouthful of food at the time.
The long-winded name for this problem is Temporomandibular joint dysfunction! It is fairly unusual but I had it & it sounds like you could too. It's just one complication that you can get after wisdom teeth extraction. If you have a lot of pain in the jaw you can take anti-inflammatory medication. The good news is that it is always temporary, but will take a long time to go away. Mine disappeared after about 2 years or so!

Enter NHS dental services Sheffield into your seach engine, work your way through the menus and you will come-up with a list of all local dentists -a list of their services and if they are taking-on new NHS patients

If you ring NHS Direct on 0845 46 47 and tell them you're looking for a dentist locally they'll be able to tell you who's still registering patients and whether they are NHS or private and how to get an emergency dentist if you should need to. Good luck, hope you get it sorted :)

Try this site (http://www.nhs.uk/servicedirectories/Pages/ServiceSearch.aspx), just pop in your postcode and they'll find your nearest.

I found a site back in Feb when my wisdom tooth was poking through the side of my jaw that listed all the dentists and what services they offer I.E. nhs patients, tax credits exempt, children etc but I have searched high and low for you and can't find it...sorry, but that looks ok....

Hope all goes well, don't go as far as I did....drilling into the jaw etc...not nice

Once again this makes me sick

If you are ill and need a doctor you go and see a GP.
These folk have trained at med school for 5 years then as junior docs for 4 after that.
You see your GP and its free.
If you need complex life saving heart or brain surgery you get sent to the hospital to see a specialist who has trained for 20 years and thats free too.

If you have toothache you can go and suffer

Dentists train for 4 years then go and find a private practice

If they wanted to they could work for the NHS but they can earn triple if not more privately so guess what the choice is there?

Funny tho that they all go private.

If this government tied them to the NHS for a bit after funding 4 years of dental school plus all those years of schooling there prob wouldnt be the same demand for private dentistry.

Or does this just mean that doctors are stupid?

Some dentists go private .....not all. It's also not helped by the fact that there is a shortage of qualified dentists to start with.

There's an NHS in Hillsborough on Victor Street. I thik it's called Victor STreet Dental Surgery ;)

Don't go here, I used to be registered here but I could never get an appointment as they always said 'we're waiting for a new dentist starting'. When i did manage to get seen it was a new dentist everytime and when I needed emergency treatment, even as a registered patient, they wouldn't see me.

I'm now registered as an NHS patient at High Green Dental Practice and they take new NHS patients and I would definately recommend them.

I dont know if you know but there is a fully equiped dentist in the new extension at Sheffield Cathedral. I dont know what kind of care they provide but I suppose its worth an enquiry.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/health/ask_the_doctor/temperomandibular.shtml
found this site. which explains a few things.

Ive tried all the links to dentists and read the lists and they all say they are not accepting any new nhs patients.

I now have another problem.
This morning a letter came from NGH with the date of my op and its in ten days time.

Im going to go to the stocksbridge one and show them my letter the nurse gave me about needing to have my teeth checked etc before the op.
If no joy there il try all the ones people have recommended on here and also ask them their charges for private dental work,

My surgeon will refuse to operate if there might be something wrong with my teeth.

Your best bet might be to marry someone who is already on an NHS dentist's list. It's about the only way in now.

I needed a dentist last week as a filling fell out and the dentist who did it originally has gone the private route. I went onto the Sheffield Primary Care Trust site and managed to find around half a dozen who were listed as taking on new NHS. Many of them are taking on new patients but have a waiting list up to five months long, not a lot of use when you got a hole in a tooth the size of a small Pacific island. One of my list of possible was Fir Vale Dental, on Blyde Road, just next to the traffic lights. I rang them Tuesday afternoon, registered with them over the phone and got an appointment for 4:30 Weds. By five o'clock weds night I had had an inspection, a new filling and three further appointments in July and August for further work. Friendly welcoming young lady on reception and efficient treatment by the dentist and nursing staff. Restored my jaded faith in the NHS a bit. Give them a try, if you don't have transport then I would think any bus going to the Northern General would get you close enough. No doubt someone on SF will know the busses better than me.
