View Full Version : Loxley Valley Walk Sunday 15th July

A gentle stroll of around 4 miles is planned for the 15th July through the Loxley Valley to Bradfield, ironically along the path of the original Sheffield Flood in the 1800`s.
Once at Bradfield we can either catch the bus back, or return by the same route as we have done on previous walks.
The walk will start at the tram terminus at Malin Bridge at 10.30, for details of tram times I would contact Stagecoach.
There are refreshments available at several pubs along the way, or at the cafe in Bradfield for people who don't want to take a packed lunch.
It would be nice to see some old faces, and new ones too, and if anybody is worried about water levels and so forth, then there is no need because there is an alternative walking route which goes along the road if necessary.

Put me down for this one - I've plotted the approximate route on Google Maps - http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=1110414
just love playing with this - but as Albert says it's even better to get out and walk it :)

Well that makes 4 up to now Neoteric, non-forumers Taxman and Andrea are up for it too. As a matter of interest, how far does your new toy say the walk is?

It makes it 4.8386 miles - you should also be able to see the mile markers and the elevation graph which shows something like 200 foot elevation - mainly over the first 3 miles.

Hi Whitemutt,
nice to see you back - quite afew people on our recent walks were enquiring where you were and we certainly miss Maggie tearing around at 100mph :)

Agree about the weather putting a damper on things recently - but as a responsible group it's sometimes better to err on the side of caution and cancel a walk.

Good to see you back, I'd been wondering where you'd got to, seems ages since I saw you last, hope you can make it on Sunday.

Just been looking at your Gmaps Pedometer route - it's wonderful how you can zoom in and see the actual walk as a photo. I'll have to try it out sometime.

Wayy hayy, welcome back young ladies! Having said that, your last walk was also my last walk can you believe.
Maggie in season must be a nightmare, cos Maggie out of season is a nightmare to start with (only kidding, love her to bits) Hopefully see you Sunday, lots of scandal for you to catch up on :o

Last one to Bradfield buys the tea and cakes Albert :)

From the Met office

Outlook for Friday to Sunday:
Further heavy rain spreading north on Friday afternoon. Mainly dry on Saturday and most of Sunday but with the risk of further heavy rain later.
Updated: 1510 on Wed 11 Jul 2007

So looks like we all will be in the clear unless the weather arrives early.
I was planning on starting out early and walking from Lady's Bridge up to Malin Bridge by 10:30 then on to Bradfield - sort of Sheffield Flood (1864 version) in reverse. By the way I've got a copy of "The Dramatic Story of the Sheffield Flood" by Peter Machan - if anyone want's to borrow it PM me - it's a really interesting read.

Hi Lulu

Other regulars have asked me to contact you to say you'll be very welcome if you come Sunday :). It's always nice to see new faces, if you do manage to get I'm sure you'll enjoy it, all we need is the weather cos according to my reckoning there could be @ a dozen people coming on this walk.

Well no - but this "young" one likes to be prepared - so it's probably not going to be a shorts, teeshirt and trainers walk this Sunday :)

Cloudy and wet on Sunday with a risk of some heavy, thundery bursts of rain. Sunshine and showers on Monday and Tuesday.
Updated: 0346 on Fri 13 Jul 2007

Don't want to appear to be a doom merchant - but with recent events I do think it's wise to take note of any severe weather warnings and possibility of flooding along the route. I think you in fact cancelled the Walk on 1st July because of these very factors :)

I've walked along the bottom of the Loxley valley in the last few days and can tell everyone that apart from the occasional patches of mud the paths are in pretty good condition at the moment. I can't see rain making any difference to that.

Haven't walked up further than the first couple of miles though- if someone who knows the quality of the paths up there can comment then it makes the decision on whether to walk much easier.

Thanks for info - the weather is so changeable at the moment it may well be that we need our shorts and teeshirts by Sunday :)
I was walking in Bradfield last night by Dale Dike - all the paths around there are OK - still some flooding on the roads but this looked like burst water mains?

This "young one" will definitely be wearing tee shirt, shorts and trainers, or even flip-flops, oh and maybe even some swimming trunks, cos I think people are going over the top now worrying about the weather. Not seen any flooding near me recently, have I missed something?

The Met Office is forecasting further periods of heavy rain during the next few days. During Sunday, outbreaks of locally heavy and thundery rain are expected to move northwards across the UK and are likely to give some large totals - in excess of 25mm in many areas, and perhaps in excess of 50mm in a few parts. The rainfall is likely to be very intense rather than prolonged. Wales and western areas of England are currently greatest at risk on Sunday, extending to many northern parts later. Some transport disruption is possible. This is the first warning of disruption due to heavy rain. This warning will be updated by around 1200, Saturday 14th July 2007

Issued at: 1224 Fri 13 Jul

Old proverb "there is no such thing as bad weather only bad clothing". Just saying I'm always seriously prepared when I go out walking - even have spare waterproofs to lend out:) - and suncream as well if those forecasters get it all wrong.

Yes, I agree people are being daft about the weather - we're (me and taxman) going to be there anyway; we don't care about a bit of rain, it's not as if it's in the middle of nowhere, is it? :) Seeya tomorrow.......

A big thanks to the pub (!?)who let noah and his flock in and to the cafe at Bradfield where the caffeine fix was of the best quality as was the ham and sweet stuff !

An enjoyable (half) walk for me, despite the rain. My excuse for turning back 1/2 way was it was my first walk for 6 weeks and I needed to take it steady! Nothing at all to do with the weather (honest Parkwoman) or the mud (honest Feargal). Hats off though to Mardy, Neo and Taxman who were the only ones to do the return leg. You deserve a medal!
Highlight of the walk though had got to be the unusual sheep, well rams, with the enormous b***s. I wonder whether one of the photographers has captured their enormity? Made a man feel inadequate they did.
Great turnout considering the conditions, 13 in all, plus 4 very wet pooches who must have wondered why the heck they were out on a day like today.
Special hi to newbies Jess and Lulu, one of whom soon got in to the spirit of things by using a convenient bush after downing a pint at the pub. No secrets with this group I'm afraid lass, nearly 36,000 people now know what you're like. Sorry :hihi:

What a fab walk ! Bit wetter than the last trip and no frogs to be seen but fab weatehr if your a duck

Started out along river with trees in it and water the colour of strong tea, saw the ducks that were balls of fluff last time we saw them. Then along path with a weir and we saw the Horses that I took pics of last time. The small brown one hadnt grown much :P

Took pics of the rain in the ponds and of the inside of old industrial wotsit place, fishing pond and another weir. Then there was a hill from hell on the 'easy going' walk :P and I got attacked by the Hound from Hell that wanted to lick me to death :gag: and stare me out :loopy: At the Dam we saw the worlds ugliest Sheep and a guy snooping round the boats :suspect:

At the end we saw people playing Tennis and an ice cream van  Found cool sign with somewhere called Dungworth :) and went on a free ride on the Deliverance log flume ride on the way home :P

Photos are on www.RFStock.co.uk - click on Loxley valley in walks section - after the road sign photo you'll see the ones from last trip so stop there if you dont wanna see the others all over again...

Well if Scoobz did half a walk I did 1 and a half to make up for it.
I actually started at 14 Division Street and followed the approximate route the Waterworks' chief engineer, John Gunson, would have gone on that fatefull night in 1864 when the Dale Dyke Dam burst. I only cheated a bit to make up some time by getting the tram for a couple of stops.

After I left the other walkers - I carried on up to Dale Dyke - you might notice the photo with the stone enscribed CLOB - this stands for Centre Line Old Bank and is where the old Dam wall would have been.
Pictures are here - too tired to put them onto Google Maps at moment:)

This would have been a lovely walk if it wasn't for the rain - we must all be bonkers. Still, the company made up for it and it was nice to meet some newbies as well as old faces who'd been missing for a few weeks. "Express" bus service from Stagecoach got from Low Bradfield to Hillsborough in about 10 mins.

Hope you got home safely after we leaped for our lives in Malin Bridge-or are you, as we speak, teetering on the edge of a cliff, inching your way to the exit as the driver wields a machete!! Yes, another enjoyable and satisfying walk. The rain doesn't put me off, it simply adds a different dimension! The way back was good too - although some of the paths were a lot wetter and more slippery on the way back. I gave up trying to dodge the puddles of water and mud and just waded through them anyway. It was lovely to get back and have a hot shower! :)

I only took a few photos and will post them later when they're developed.
