View Full Version : Mother / parent and baby or toddler groups
Frenchie 07-01-2011, 19:08 Have a look at www.steppingoutwithmichelle.co.uk
Michelle does classes in Killamarsh and Beighton for children 3 1/2 +. They are very fun classes which the kids love. My daughter has been going for 5 years, classes are very reasonably priced too. (A lot of people find Susans a bit too pricey).
If i were you i would go and visit the different classes with your daughter and see which she prefers.
Miss_S_83 07-01-2011, 19:41 Will look into all suggestions, thank you everyone x
Queenie30 07-01-2011, 20:30 Hi Queenie, those are the classes I am thinking of as the other two I was looking into, Baby Ballet and Baby Street are on weekdays and too early.
Can you tell me what Trendy Tots actually is, like the style of dance, and if you have any experience on the Street tots class?
oooh Im more excited than her!x
Trendy tots is good, they start by doing dances, like superman song, birdie song, then move on to dance steps/salsa music, they do exams but these are not compulsory.
my daughter goes to street dance on thursday, and this is really good, she likes the music and the dances.
We go to Bailey Cox dance academy (http://www.bailey-cox.com/). They do lessons at weekends or after school and start from 3 in ballet and tap. My daughter is the same age as your daughter and loves the classes.
Vicky Durning (http://www.vickidurning.com/) runs classes in Dronfield, but have no personal experience of her classes, but they were my second choice if Bailey Cox didn't work out.
I highly recommend MIDDLEWOOD DANCE & THEATRE SCHOOL (http://www.middlewooddancetheatres6.co.uk/). All exams taken are under the British Ballet Organisation (http://www.bbo.org.uk/training/student-training-and-exams.php), and recognized by the Government’s Qualifications and Curriculum Authority (QCA/OFQUAL). So when they do the exam, thay actually stand for something.

tigger2004 19-01-2011, 20:12 is there such a thing? x
Jerseygirl69 20-01-2011, 15:23 Hi can anyone tell me what day and times this playgroup is on thanks
you could come to the woodhouse west children's centre on a wed afternoon for the baby group or friday morning for the breastfeeding cafe (well that's what they call it, but it's not compulsory to feed whilst you're there, and it covers more than just feeding)
I was wondering this also, i'm at Gleadless Townend. I have a 4 month old.
Diane x
There's a children's centre at Charnock, but you'd have to get in touch with them to find out what sessions they run
tigger2004 21-01-2011, 22:41 i will hve to ask and then ill repost thank you x thpought there might have been something at the local community centre x
there may well be. ask them. I only know the existence of Charnock facilities as the parent engagement worker at woodhouse also covers charnock

carmencarter 31-01-2011, 16:25 On Monday afternoon, from 1.30pm, there is a "buggy brigade" activity in Hillsborough Park- just been this afternoon, making the most of the weather. There were three of four new mums today- it was eight of us- you just turn up at 1.30 outside the pavillion/ green bowling area, we have a little walk around the park with the Ranger, and then back to the pavillion for tea/ coffee and soft play.
My own daughter is 6 months old, there was one baby who was 3 months old and some are above one I think. very friendly and relaxed :-)
sheffandy 31-01-2011, 21:46 there is a group specifically for under 1's at the Memorial Hall on Forbes Road on a Tuesday morning (think it starts at 10.30 finishes about 12.30 ish. Also if you are a breastfeeding mum there is a dropin at the childrens library in Hillsborough Park on a Monday at 10.30 to 12.30 - this was a really nice group with HV's and other breastfeeding mums at hand if you have any questions or problems. Sometimes you can get your baby weighed there too
sheffandy 31-01-2011, 21:48 this is a useful previous thread.

Emily Firmin 01-02-2011, 13:55 I used to take my little one to the mum and baby group at St John's Memorial Hall on a Tuesday morning, 10 - 12. There was a lovely atmosphere and my little boy and I made some good friends there.
SheffLight 01-02-2011, 19:16 Hi
We run a group for women suffering from PND. Moving can be a terrifying thing without pregnancy too. We meet at the megacentre on Fridays 1-3 pm. If you check out our website you will also get some self help ideas to help keep your mood up. wwwsheffieldlight.co.uk. Good luck x
WADSLEYOWL 01-02-2011, 19:53 All above groups are lovely, although think breastfeeding has moved but not sure where. Theres also a group at St Barts church near Primrose View tram stop on wednesday at 12.30 till 2pm. Very quiet group with mixed age range so eight month old can grow into it.
wadsleysale 01-02-2011, 21:15 There's a baby/toddler group at carlton road methodist church on a monday morning 9:30-11:30. 1st child is £1.50 and 50p per additional child. snack and drink provided and a tea/coffee for adults. craft activities each week.

Horacesgirl 12-02-2011, 10:04 Hi, Sheffield Information Link has up to date lists of mother and toddler groups. A friend of mine has just had a list for the groups in her area so she has been able to pick a couple of groups to go to and make new friends. their number is 275 6699
Horacesgirl 12-02-2011, 10:11 Hi - if you are looking for parent and toddler groups and other activities to do with your child, speak to Sheffield Information Link, telephone 2756699. They can send you a list of activities specific to your postcode and if you are on the border between 2 they can send you the information for both. the information is regularly updated and they provide a very good service.
steph1988 13-02-2011, 17:49 ok thanks for the replies i will ring them tomorrow the 1 at shiregreen childrens centre sounds good as its only down the road form me
sunshine4 14-02-2011, 09:58 Hartley tots is now run by new people who have created a warm and inviting atmosphere for children and parents....
I would strongly recommend hartely tots to anyone, because they have strong visons on how well it should be run and have clear policies and procedures in place....I am sorry that your time at Hartley tots was not good but I would strongly suggest for you to go just for a short visit and look at the changes that they have made!!!!!!

Hi - sounds like you are sorted but just wanted to mention we go to one at Wisewood Community Sports Centre, 9:45 on a Saturday morning. Its called Little Munchkins & my daughter loves it. Just turn up on the day or ring 0114 234 9284 for more info. I think ots from age 2 to 5 and there is one for the older ones at 10:45.
Just wanting to get her to mix a bit more because she is very clingy so any ideas please.
DeViL_WoMaN 12-03-2011, 09:00 There is always Jellytots in town.
We are situated in the Lower Hall of the Methodist Mission on Chapel Walk (opposite superdrug). If you go in that entrance and walk straight ahead there is a lift to get down to the lower floor.
We open Mon, Weds and Fri from 1-3pm. It's £1.50 a session for non members and £1 a session for members (This will be explained when you complete a registration form).
We also provide tea, coffee and juice for a small fee.
There are no strict rules or contracts that tie you to attend regularly, so just come when you want to. We are also open during school holidays and if at any point we are closed (ie, hall being used for other reasons) then we will put a post on this thread or on our facebook group (which, if you are on facebook, can be found by searching for: Jellytots parent and baby/ toddler group).
Hope this helps :D
carmencarter 19-03-2011, 16:09 "Buggy brigade" is on on Mondays from 1.30 pm in Hillsborough park.
Starts with a 30 minute walk round the park ( Mummies and babies, sometimes Daddies too) and then back to the pavillion for drink/ chat/soft play.
Very friendly and laid back- and hopefully appropriate now that weather is nice :-)
Carlton Road playgroup is also a good one. Mondays and Thursdays 9.30am til 11.30am. Not just babies though, all different ages. About £1.50 I think.
Theres also Wadsley Church Toddler Praise on a Wednesday. 1.45pm til 3pm. Bit more structured, playtime, songs, creative time then more playtime. Free as well. Very friendly group and highly recommended.
PM me if you want some more details.
indiechick 20-03-2011, 07:11 I am, as of 1st of April going to no longer be working Mondays
Is Carlton Road toddler group ok for a toddler (ie its not baby focused?)
Also, although I have a toddler, might join in the buggy walk anyway if ok? It would be nice to meet more Mums (I went back to work pretty much as soon as I moved to Sheffield)
spotty dog 20-03-2011, 08:17 St johns mum and toddler is on a Thursday 10am till 12.costs £1.situated at the church on Forbes rd,across from la plata pub.

Hi,
There is lovely gardening group on a Firday morning at Charnock Childrens centre. It is mainly just outdoor play but some of the toddlers help with planting some vegetables.
It starts at 9.30, hoever, it is not on this week due to the royal wedding bank holiday.
I have moved to Sheffield this week and would love for my little boy to ineract with other children. I'm in the Stannington/Hillsborough area. Can anyone give me any idea's please?
owls4life186 04-05-2011, 18:47 There is a centre on wood lane in stannington. Can't remember what it is called it is just down from shooters grove school.
toddler groups tend to be held in church halls or community centers try ringing stanninton infants school and ask for information on any local toddler groups
You can get a list from Sheffield Information Link, which I think has changed its name but someone on here will know. Hope you find Sheffield a friendly place to live :-)
p.s. when I was new to it all I sometimes found structured activity classes easier as there was something to focus on other than making conversation with strangers, though I did both and met lots of lovely people.
just remembered space fun zone above co op in hillsborough have a toddler morning not sure which day it is but if your out and about in hillsborough just pop in and ask them, the church behind rawson (hillsborough tram stop) used to do a toddler morning not sure if still do as my kids are all school age now but again worth calling in, will let you know if think of any others
yummymummy88 05-05-2011, 21:06 You could join this group
yummymummymonthly@groups.facebook.com
I am in stannington and have a two year old and a six month old. A lot of people on there arrange different things to meet up at parks or play centre.
The childrens centre on wood lane are called Shooters grove children centre if you ring them they will tell you what groups they are running. There is also a toddler group that meets at a church in the village but im not sure on any details but there is only two or three churches in the village so you could give them a call and see what they have there :)

Hi there
Im looking for a dance class for my 4.5 year old. All the ones Ive found have been quite formal and tend to be straightforward ballet or tap etc. We are really looking for a more informal dance class that offers a bit of variety and not leading to exams or badges. Can anyone help?
I have found a few of the type we are looking for but not any nearby...
Would really appreciate it if anyone could help as spent hours looking with no luck so far....
Thank you!
We attend e-dance sessions run by a lady called Charlie and they are fantastic. There website is www.e-dance.net
Thank you for that. It is not far from me. I think we will try a session. I was really looking for a class that was just for her though so will keep searching too!
Starlet83 19-05-2011, 08:00 Hi,

barleyfruit 07-06-2011, 19:49 Hello
Me and some other Mums run a playgroup for 0-5 year olds in S7 (near the big Tesco on Abbeydale Rd) and we are looking for more people to come to along!
It is on Monday mornings from 9.45 until 11.45, there are loads of toys, a snack time, singing time and tea/coffee for the grown ups. It costs £1.50 for the first child and 50p per additional child.
This playgroup has been running for over 30 years now, by various mums, just voluntarily and we have hit a bit of a dip of numbers so need a few more mums/dads/grandparents/childminders/carers and their tots to join us!
PM me for more details!
Hi there
This sounds great for me as I have two children under five and am new to the area. I am busy for the next 3/4 Mondays but then available after then, so just wondering what date you are running to.
Thank you
barleyfruit 11-06-2011, 09:28 Hi
The playgroup runs in term time, so the last one before the summer holidays will be the 18th July. You are very welcome to come along when you are free.
Playgroup is in St Oswald's church hall (we aren't associated with the church just hire the hall) and it is on the corner of abbeydale road and bannerdale road. There is a car park up the drive if you need it!
Mr_J_Bravo 22-06-2011, 08:59 Im looking for a suitable parent/toddler group to take my 14 month old daughter.Shes been to one at Hillsborough however there were mainly 2-3 year olds there, who naturally can be a bit boisterous and 'full on' compared to younger toddlers.
Does anyone know of anywhere that has an upper age limit of maybe 2?
Thanks for reading.
BizzyBeading 22-06-2011, 11:27 Hi. New Toddler Group opening. Butterflies Toddler Group We are having an official open day on the 7 July.

Hi Liz
If you want to supply any clothing for these little ones with your logo on, ie hoodies, t shirts sweatshirts, safari caps etc, we can help with this. Brand identity is always good for little ones.
Hi, i just wanted to let parents of young children (0-5) know that there are now 20 Ready Steady Go Groups up and running in Sheffield. The groups allow parents to access a toddler group in their local area (most are in chidren's centres) but are specifically for children with additional needs, developmental delay, behaviour difficulties, VI, HI, etc. There is no referral or assessment to access the groups, just turn up, like a you would for a mainstream toddler group. The groups link in with a variety of services from health, education, social care - whoever you need! who can offer general advice and sign posting.
The main purpose and benefit of the group is to get parents to support each other in an environment where no one is judging you or your kids.
Please contact me for info on where groups are happening, also SIGN have an up to date list, and hopefully, the professionals seeing your children should know about them.
Hope to see you at a group soon :)

andy1234 26-06-2011, 10:33 hi does any1 no the best place for dance lessons in sheffield for my 3 year old daughter wanting street dance ect thanks for looking
Some of the bigger schools will expect her to start with ballet and tap before she moves on to street dance. Some will also have waiting lists. Not sure of anywhere that does streetdance to start with. When you join, also think about how seriously you want to take it. We are with one of the bigger dance schools (just because they were local and had spaces at the time) where my 3yr old is starting with ballet or tap, and they are expected to be in the show, which means you have to buy a costume, tickets for the show, get out the blusher and blue eyeshadow for the show etc- I found it all a bit of a shock but my daughter loves it!
richarda 27-06-2011, 13:13 Try Constance Grants on Psalter Lane, my wife went for 12 years and can highly recommend them for any age group, and all types of dance

I am still liaising with venues but classes will begin in Woodseats week commencing the 19th Sept. Out of interest wood you travel to Norton Lees from Woodseats? I have found a lovely venue there with lots of parking but i'm not sure if sticking to the hub of Woodseats would be better? If you'd like to email mail i will keep you posted : )

I want to get him into dancing actually, he loves watching dancing on tv and bobbing along and loves music but he's not crawling just yet, I'll keep it in mind for when he's a bit older as I'd not seen any dance classes for younger than 2-3.
To pp I can't do Tuesdays or Wednesday's it's my husbands only days off and I don't feel right going out without him.

JennySeymour 03-05-2012, 11:51 Hi there
Good tips re the chatterbox magazine, them and their sister magazine Link, is the bible of things to do in sheffield for babies and preschoolers as far as I'm concerned. You can generally pick them up at GPs, but they have online links too.
we go to Ecclesall playgroup on Ringinglow road - they run Mon-weds and are great but usually have a waiting list.
We also take part in Kindermusik with Elaine (same venue) and Pyjama drama with Gemma - both of which my boys love.
I'm also going to be launching my own arts and craft classes for babies and children from June 2012 (The Creation Station, Sheffield) in various locations across west sheffield, so if anyone is interested - let me know. You can find us on facebook or have a look at our website....
