View Full Version : Old Chapeltown Station - Where Is It?

On Wikipedia the entry for Chapeltown states that there is still a disused station which can be accessed via White Lane. The building has been partially renovated, apparently.

I've looked on another thread the subject of which was why it was moved, but it all got a little confusing.

So, I've posted up a map with "Chapeltown Station" (I think) visible in text. Below it is a modern aerial view. I've circled a building that looks as though it may be the station, but can anyone confirm it? And is the pathway to the north the old railway line? And, is the station accessible by the public, and if so, how do I get to it?

Just asked my OH who knows about these things and he says yes that's it and that it is now a private house. He says its in the same style as woodhouse station (but can't find a link to that) hope that helps

Thank you. I know Woodhouse Station pretty well, so I can visualise it.

Go along Station Road at Chapeltown as if you are going to Hoyland Common. When the road starts to become a hill (White Lane) which is just after the left turn off to Manchester (it is the old entrance to Newton Chambers), you will see a turn off on the right. That is where the old Chapeltown station was. It was also accessed from a turn off on the opposite side of the road, and a bridge used to span the road there. The other Chapeltown station was on Sussex Road, which is a continuation of the road leading from Sation Road to Asda. The new Chapeltown station is accessed by steps leading to its platform from Market Street.

Thanks, Nigel. That's very handy.

The old station building and platforms are still there. Hard to miss really since the old platforms are connected to the currently used platforms.

If you go to the 'Down' side of the platform, ie where trains go North, walk up the fenced path on the old platform up to the ramp where the old station house is. The photo of the Wikipedia article was taken from the road bridge next to the old station house with the building and old platforms along the right side of the photograph.

You can find additional photographs of the old and new Chapeltown station alike, here: http://www.vlaki.com/Photos/044_England/90000SY/vgallery.php?CountryID=001&StationID=f170

On the station look towards Barnsley and there it is. New station moved a matter of yards.

Although I've not seen it on, this is a great site about disused stations:

Most of you haven't bothered to follow the map link given in the opening post.

I'm not referring to the old station adjacent to the current one at Asda, but one further north, off White Lane.

Yep, the spot on the map is bang on, as you start to climb the hill on White lane theres a access driveway on the left, or if you park on the road that leads to the thorncliffe industrial estate and scramble up the banking you should find it, last time I was out that way the station was converted to a house.

Isn't it at the back of the Chapeltown Asda?

No.

Thanks, everyone. Been up there today and we had a nice chat with the owner. It's a shame only a small section has been renovated - it's a beautiful building.

there used to be a bridge across the main road,
you can see where the line went on the map (the dark gap in the trees)

last time i went past the old stn i was lost in the woods and the owner gave me an anoying frown as i clambered over the fence to get back to the main road ;)
good pics of chapletown on the site by the way,

Nice pictures, the building in the pictures was the old ticket office situated at the end of Sussex Road. The old platforms had the traditional Waiting Rooms, nice comfortable buildings usually heated by a coal fire kept stoked up by the station staff. YES stations actually had staff in those days [ 1960 ish].
They were safe places to wait for a train, mugging had'nt been invented and the local scrotes could'nt afford paint to vandalise anything. We used to catch trains here on Saturday mornings to go to Wombwell swimming baths as Chapeltown did'nt have a swimming pool in those days.

Happy Days

Here's a couple of photos of the building as it looks today - thanks so much to the lovely owners for the guided tour. The present owner, by the way, is actually the former station master, and filled us in on the history of the place. A splendid fella.

We called in to see him on business but ended up chatting about the building for an hour.

Ah yes, sorry I missed it on the OP. Did you find the answer to why it was moved?

I thought it was about 100 metres north of its present location.

There is one there, but not the one I was referring to and which the old map indicated in my opening post.

No, but I've read about that on another site, I just can't remember the reason! I know it ceased being used for passengers at a certain point, and was just used for freight. Possibly the introduction of a more central passenger line and the decline made the station redundant. Dr Beeching will have had a hand in it, no doubt.
