I have just spoken to a friend, who when ringing a mutual friend on the number stored in her phonebook, ended up speaking to a complete stranger who said she had rung the wrong number.

Thinking maybe she had inadvertently edited the number in the phonebook, she asked me to try calling on the number I had. I also had spoken to my friend yesterday on the number that's in my phonebook so I know at that point it was working.

Again I got a strange girl.

About 20 minutes later the girl stranger I had spoken to called me back, witholding her number, and asked who we were and why she kept receiving calls from us. I explained to her and she said that she had been having strange calls all day, she was quite upset and it took me a while to reassure her that none of us were in anyway trying to harass her, but merely calling the number we have had stored for our friend for over 2 years. The girl said she was on Vodafone, whereas my friend is on o2. The stranger also said she had had the number for over 4years.

Thinking that maybe our friend had somehow diverted her calls (even though that's very hard to do accidentally!) we tried to text her as texts are not normally diverted. These are somehow going to this stranger too.

Does anybody have ANY idea what is going on as we don't have a landline to contact our friend on, and there is a girl somewhere going hysterical and thinking she is being stalked!

Perhaps you should ask Vodaphone and O2 what's going on? Try coming from the angle that you think the phone must have been stolen, or you'll get the old 'Data Protection Act ... blah, blah, blah'

The person that is getting the unwanted calls should call the network they are on. You say its Vodafone then call 08700 701 702 (little short cut ;) )

they have faults occaisionally where the wrong numbers are connected.

But you say that this girl confirmed the number you were dialling?

It's not possible for 2 different phones to have the same number otherwise the network won't know how to route the call.

Couldn't the girl change her phone number.

Or how did she get this phone, did your friend sell it her or something?

It could also be a divert set up on the users handset.

If they have set up an automatic divert and mis typed the number it will connect to someone else.

The user will just think no ones calling.

I have called the service provider line through our company (i work for a voda specialist) They say there isn't a fault that they are currently aware of that matches this.

I would refer your friend to VF
