The Shinning is one of the best scary films that I have seen

Haven't read the book but I've heard that it's just as if not more scary...

The Ka of Gifford Hilary by Dennis Wheatley is an older book but still makes good reading, he specialised in occult books.

The Haunting is my recommendation. I love horrors and this is one of my favs, either the old black and white or the new one, the scarey thing is that you never see anything for sure, so its at the limit of your own imagination.
Alternately, Stephen Kings Rose Red is very good, very long.

Only now?!?! He's been doing that for ages.

The original version of The Ring is indeed very scary... unlike the remake.
