Can anyone help, I have taken vista off my laptop and installed XP pro back on it but my soundcard isn't recognised by XP as PnP, it does work if I get the drivers as I have done so before but have no idea what my sound card is, and device manager just says PCI device.... Is there a scan I can do that will tell me what my card is, I don't think Belarc will do it but might have a quick look. Anyone..?

You need to tell us the make and model of your laptop first. Chances are it will be an AC97 soundcard though.

It's definately not that, I think it's VIA or something like that....anyways, the make/model is Fujitsu siemens Amilo LI 1705 "1.7Ghz, Celeron M Model" if that makes any difference, as there are several different versions of the same model...Ok, this is confusing now, I'll just shut up :hihi:

What OS is native to the laptop when it was bought ? Does it come with Pista or XP ?

I had a quick look on the FS site crap as ever and i used to work for them ;)

Ok from what you said if the audio device has a yellow exclamation mark in device manager (XP)

According to FS (and i can't verify this) this Model has a VT8237A imbedded / VT1708A codec

I got this off the VIA site

VIA AC97 codecs incorporated into VT8233, VT8233A, VT8233C, VT8235 and VT8237/R South Bridges

http://www.viaarena.com/default.aspx?PageID=420&OSID=1&CatID=1010&SubCatID=104

VIA AC97 codecs incorporated into VT8233, VT8233A, VT8233C, VT8235 and VT8237/R South Bridges ( VT8237 VT8235 VT8233/A/C VT8235CE VT8233/VT8233A/VT8233B/VT8235/VT8237 VT1612A )

USE at your own risk .....

Itosan...I've got to be honest....that just went straight over my head and all I caught was Vista or XP...lol, you obviously know what your talking about, I haven't the foggiest, to me a souncard is a silicone chip, that is identified by the company that makes it and it needs a driver to run on my system...thats it lol.

I've looked on Everest home edition (Bit of a brainwave there) and it is the VIA VT8237A/8251....looked on driverguide and it doesn't exist so i'm stuffed...but yeah the native OS is good ol' vista. Gone but not forgotten, as in the sense I haven't forgotten how useless it is.

No prbs! ok from the site this >>looks<< like the right driver

http://www.viaarena.com/default.aspx?PageID=420&OSID=1&CatID=1010&SubCatID=104

From via page
Codecs supported: This driver supports all VIA southbridges with integrated sound plus several audio codecs as below.
VIA AC97 codecs incorporated into VT8233, VT8233A, VT8233C, VT8235 and VT8237/R South Bridges ( VT8237 VT8235 VT8233/A/C VT8235CE VT8233/VT8233A/VT8233B/VT8235/VT8237 VT1612A )

Supported Operating Systems: Windows Server 2003 x64, Windows XP 64-Bit, Windows ME, Windows XP, Windows 2000, Windows 98SE, Windows 98, Windows NT, Windows 95, DOS

If your system restore is on should give you a back up plan if it doesnt work and as FS ship the laptop with VISTA they prb dont support XP ?

Everest is great seems to do what it says on the tin ;)

The only support you'll get from Fujitsu is this:

http://support.fujitsu-siemens.de/DeskUpdate/index.htm

There are drivers for Vista, but not XP, which seems odd.
