poor old Amber! This is the 2nd time she has been in season and it really has knocked her duck off.
All she has done is look all sad and mooch about. I feel so sorry for her.
We are seriously thinking about having her spayed because of this, I can`t watch her go through this every time, it really has knocked her for six bless her.

aww poor girl. Have a look at Lottis recent post on having Takara spayed- has made a world of difference to her. Our dobermutt is due to have her season imminently and that doesnt sem to bother her, (but the mess is a pain for us) it's the phantom pregnanciesshe has later that are a pain. Only reason we havent had her done is worry about her going under anasthetic. Probably undue worry, I know.

Unless you plan to breed from her really there is no point letting her go through it, once spayed there is no more of the upset the dog feels, no more being kept in for weeks, no more false pregnancy, less chance of breast cancers, and no chance of her developing pyometra it really is the kindest thing to do.

Hi Lyndix (and katkin!)

I was so, so, so worried about having T spayed - I couldn't bring myself to put her under anaesthetic (despite having had dozens of them myself and been fine!) and to think of her going through such major surgery.

She had phantoms and her seasons really bothered her, her first season was ok because although she was miserable in the house, if I let her play (securely) with her friends, she had great fun and was ok, but the next one was worse and both carried phantoms after them.

It was only when she started getting aggressive with dogs who went near her (even after her season finished) and bitches that got too close around the time she had a phantom that I pushed myself to go for it.

I decided that I didn't want to breed from her in case she passed the phantoms onto her offspring and because my finances changed for the worse so ended up ringing and making an appointment for two days later so I couldn't change my mind!

I have to say - it's the best thing I've ever done! She's so much happier - it's made more of a difference than I ever expected - she's still as playful, still as active and still as badly behaved (ahem - I mean full of character!) but she's now happier around other dogs and far easier to train, I'm finding it easier to train her out of her possessive and territorial reactions to dogs near her mum, her food or her car without the hormones in the way.

I no longer have to worry about all the health risks associated with being unspayed and I can book her in for shows no matter what the time of year!!

She doesn't have to miss out on training or walks for 4 weeks at a time either.

I'm not saying that spaying will sort out behavioural problems but it has given me a window of opportunity to sort it out.

I say if it's 'just' the size of the op or the anaesthetic that's bothering you - go for it! There's less risk during a spay than of pyo in an unspayed bitch!

Just to add: Takara was very off colour when she came home and wouldn't go near anyone she just stayed in her crate, then she got a little clingy and was a little off for 1-2 days - after that, she was quiet but happy in herself and about 5 days later was arguing about whether she should still be having restricted walks!! :D
