Hello. My husband and I are looking for a house to rent. We need to move by 1 Aug. We currently live in Canterbury and are not at all familiar with Sheffield, so any advice would be helpful. I have several questions:

I have been looking online on RightMove and various estate agents' websites, but I have not seen many houses that fit our requirements (unfurnished, 3+ bedrooms, off-street parking, quiet neighborhood). Most rentals seem aimed at students or young professionals who want to share a house. Any suggestions for where else to look for house lettings?

We are both lecturers, and would like to be as close as possible to Sheffield Hallam's Collegiate Crescent campus as my husband likes to cycle to work. Any information about suitable areas? We do not have kids, so schools are not a concern. And is cycling going to be feasible?

I am trying to make appointments to view potential houses next week. We will only have a few days in Sheffield to find a place. Any other advice you can give me would be very helpful.

Also, we will likely be hiring a van and moving ourselves, but we are considering hiring someone to spend a few hours helping us unload. Do you think we could get a student or someone for, say £50 for 2 hours, and how might I find someone?

Thanks very much for your help!

Hi Christine,

Welcome (in advance) to Sheffield; you'll never want to leave.

The main difficulty will be finding off-street parking. Many of the central areas consist of predominantly terraced housing with on-street parking. The Collegiate Campus area is very studenty as both Sheffield and Sheffield Hallam students like to live and party there.

If you're going to cycle to work then avoid Crookes, Crosspooland Lodge Moor unless you have steel thighs.

Nethergreen/Netheredge/Ranmoor/Fulwood are traditional academics' territory. Parts of Heeley and Meersbrook are quiet and friendly, with a lot of Sheffield originals still living in the area. Millhouses/Whirlowdale/Carterknowle/Ecclesall are also leafy and not too far from Collegiate campus.

Probably avoid the Hillsborough side of town because you either tackle big hills or follow the traffic round. Hunters Bar/Broomhall/SharrowVale can be very noisy with students doing their usual thing but there are quieter bits.

I know someone who may be able to help you move in. Pm me if you're interested.

If you want further advice then put up street names of possible locations and forummers will give their (usually conflicting) views.

Good luck finding somewhere.

Put 'Gumtree sheffield' into google and it will come up with more lettings.
low_carbons advice is good for areas to live. Cycling is not easy in Sheffield due to the traffic and the hills but certainly Endcliffe, Netheredge are near and so is Broomhill though v steep going home!

Welcome!! my partner works at hallam he is a lecturer, we live in Crosspool but are moving to Walkey both these areas are handy for the Uni, cycling in Sheffield is never easy there are hills everywhere! You should get soemwhere in Broomhill/ Walkley/ Ranmoor/ Fulwood area, for calm living and quiet life the West of the city is the best place to be in my opinion. Best of luck:D

There is a chap called Dom or (Donkey) on the forum he will help with muscle for moving and is cheep as chips.

Thanks for the warm welcome and advice! What about Greystones and Woodseats? There seem to be houses available for rent there, whereas unfortunately (but not surprisingly) there are not many in the areas you all have recommended. And I'm guessing Stannington is not cycleable, since it appears to involve crossing a number of hilly areas? My husband does enjoy a bit of a challenge, but he would like to keep the ride under 20 minutes if possible.

Welcome in advance, all Sheffield is hilly, but the areas you've mentioned are lovely and we have a lot of trees it is wonderfully green.

Woodseats is good -we've lived here for 6 months after leaving Crookes and I can still cycle to Sheff Uni. It'd be even easier to cycle to Hallam Uni using the cycle paths. The ride back is pretty uphill, but I can do it being pregnant so I reckon he won't have a problem!

And a big welcome!

Greystones is quiet, very suburban and family friendly with lots of traditional semis; really easy walkable access to the Porter Valley, Forge Dam and the start of the Peak District. Uphill back from work...

Woodseats has excellent shops, is more towny and much busier (can be a bit traffic hell) but is close to lovely Graves Park. Mainly terraced housing. Up hill back from work...

You might have spotted the pattern. :hihi:

Go for Greystones / Banner Cross. Collegiate campus is up that end of town.

You could try Rightmove for lettings.

Good luck!!

I was going to suggest Greystones, its hilly, but there are plenty of three bedroom houses around, with larger gardens and parking space, close to shops and public transport and its a nice quiet mixed community.

Hi if you are still looking for someone to help you move you could try the student employment agency at SHU, it's called netWORK and you can call them on 0114 225 3940. Good luck!

One more question: Can anyone recommend a cheap B&B in the area for when we come up to view houses?

Netheredge hotel is quite close, it used to be a bit of a dump but I think they have done it up. It's in the middle of a leafy area and close the campus.
