View Full Version : My wedding pics!!!
officegirl 19-02-2007, 11:35 AM Hi
Has anyone used Marisa the dress maker which is located next door to the Grovenor hotel behind Debenhams.
I popped in to get a quote for a dress I need making for my wedding as I don’t seem to be able to find anything I like in town or meadowhall.( I want a prom type dress rather than a giant dress). She seems very reasonable priced and speedy as she says it will only take 4 weeks to make the dress.
If you have used her please let me know even if its bad feed back id rather know now before i get measured and pay for something that isnt great
thanks
office girl :)
SWFC. 19-02-2007, 11:39 AM yes i used her for my wedding dress(before she had the shop).I had a picture of a dress and she did it to the very last detail..brilliant. She did my bridesmaids dressed to,a design we came up with together. She then designed my friends wedding dress which again was beautiful.Shes that good my friend is having her make a dress which she saw in a magazine.I can 100% recommend her, shes very friendly too.
em2007 19-02-2007, 11:42 AM how much would it cost? i've been wanting a dress to go out in for ages, the thing is its in my head and noone actually sells it. would she do that?
obviously i'd draw it too, i dont expect her to read my mind lol
officegirl 19-02-2007, 11:50 AM she's quoted me £150 for the dress i want which includes material and making it ( think thats quite cheap ) - kind of like you em2007 i have something in my head and no where sells it - think its because i want red and black not really traditional or spring like - many thanks for the reply swfc - i feel alot more confident about seeing her now .
thanks
SWFC. 19-02-2007, 12:11 PM you are more than welcome..she is def. recommended. She will do a great job and kep you well informed..good luck and maybe you could post a pic. up here of your dress so we can all see it at the end!!!

Diana's Bridal House, 551 Ecclesall road ..... www.dianasbridalhouse.net:thumbsup:
Thats where i went for my dress in '05, they are very professional, you can buy an off the peg designer dress or they will make one for you.
I first chose one off the peg, then 5 weeks before the big day ....i changed my mind and they made one to my own design!! (actually for sale atm:rolleyes: )
Anyway, hope you find what you want, good luck:)
clairerob 23-02-2007, 08:39 PM Thanks Claire xx
purple_frog 23-02-2007, 08:43 PM there's also one in the West One complex that looks rather smart from the outside ... if only i'd an excuse to go in and try on some of the stuff in their windows!
mrseggy 23-02-2007, 08:49 PM Hi,
I bought my dress from Casamiento in Barnsley (01226 786334), The same dress on eccy rd (Diana i Think) was £1200, The same dress from Casamiento for £800 !!!
Good Luck
Shelley
Mrs Goose 23-02-2007, 08:50 PM After having trawled around them all during the run up to our wedding and run the gauntlet of several nasty old trouts with very fixed ideas of what suited 'Madame', I'd say that Diana's on Eccy Road is definitely the friendliest and most down-to-earth of all the specialist bridal shops I found in Sheffield. Mind you, my dress came from Monsoon in the end! :D
clairerob 23-02-2007, 09:26 PM Thanks very much . Much appreciated xx
mazda5 10-03-2007, 10:11 PM can anybody help me i need a wedding outfit tried many places but not classy enough anybody got any ideas
rach73 10-03-2007, 10:37 PM Have you tried debenhams, if thats not classy enough alot of wedding shops do really nice outfits, not just for the bride.
moogie 10-03-2007, 11:08 PM try carols on abbeydale road - they can be a bit pricey but they have stuff thats great for mother of the bride/groom
jamima 10-03-2007, 11:56 PM try obi at doncaster, they sell 'one offs' or john lewis have some nice frank usher outfits
wwcrazy 10-03-2007, 11:57 PM Id say have a trip to Leeds. Some really nice shops there and the place was sooooo clean the last time I was there.
rubin 19-03-2007, 11:02 PM I have just set the date for my wedding! can anyone tell me of any good reasonably priced bridal wear shops?
Amanda1 19-03-2007, 11:05 PM Pronuptia Ecclesall Road
Wedding days Abbeydale road
i got my dress from wedding days and the staff were lovely. Think they have a sale on at the moment too.
Plain Talker 19-03-2007, 11:06 PM there's umpteen threads on this,
search brings up this

Bonny 19-03-2007, 11:43 PM and don't forget - Debenhams have a bridal section. Have a look through the Yellow Pages and you'll probably find loads of places. Try a few bridal fairs too. So WHEN is the big day? :)
babychickens 19-03-2007, 11:50 PM i could do you a nice deal on a fantastic catherine walker number - fantastic dress, about £3200 new, only worn for one wedding! yours for the bargain price of £900. are you a size 10, by the way? go on, you know you want a couture wedding dress (albeit second hand)...
http://www.catherinewalker.com/wed/wed4.html (it's the top one on the page).
edit to add - obviously i looked better than the mannequin, as i am not unnaturally skinny and my boobs possess uplift. i marvel that the model on whom the mannequin was based could have a successful modelling career.
Jackdanny 19-03-2007, 11:58 PM EBAY - you really can not beat it!
Lol.. Most of the top models have all the personality of a plastic dummy anyway.
I still would though with a couple.
Congrats to the OP anyway on setting a date, hope you get a nice frock, but remember the frock's not the be all and end all of the day, it's your commitment to the bloke stood next to you :D
holidayhutch 20-03-2007, 12:06 AM Congratulations, when's the Big Day?
I got mine from Cassamiento in Barnsley, staff are absolutely fantastic, great personal service, free alterations and hoop hire too
jen13kd 20-03-2007, 12:24 AM I have just set the date for my wedding! can anyone tell me of any good reasonably priced bridal wear shops?
what kind of dress are you looking for and what size are you?
My best mate bought a designer dress last year and was due to be married this year but she split up with her finace.
The dress has only been worn for trying on and hasn't been adjusted/altered.
Let me know if you're interested as I can send you some pics.

millwak 20-03-2007, 09:03 AM I got mine for Casimento in Barnsley also & they were fab & they have a gr8choice, for very reasonable prices.
willman 20-03-2007, 10:09 AM dont go to blushes(unless you have no choice), rudest most arrogant bridal shop that i know.
clairerob 30-03-2007, 09:05 PM WWoooo hoooo!! Ony just found this part of the forum. lol.
Anybody been wedding dress shopping then? I have just booked to try them on on May 8th. Cant wait. Im going to Blissful daze. xx
Jackdanny 30-03-2007, 10:51 PM You really have to do ebay!
clairerob 31-03-2007, 12:08 AM No way, I couldn't, not for my wedding dress! I cant wait to go trying them on it will be such a laugh xx
babychickens 31-03-2007, 12:22 AM yebbut have you seen the prices of dresses in there?! i bought my dress from catherine walker (used to make a lot of clothes for princess di, although my dress was obviously far more tasteful), and it was a darned sight cheaper than a lot of the dresses in blissful daze. don't be afraid to negotiate on the price, the mark up on wedding dresses is HUUUUGGGEEEE.
samlasota 31-03-2007, 07:09 PM go to debenhams, after looking in various bridal stores the staff were quite rude, and dresses where over priced. I got "the one" after being made to feel special in debenhams- the last place i thought I would get one. Great service, also got a great storage bag with it! I also brought a fishtail Ivory dress from ebay that has a corest back if you are interested, comes with veil. Let me know and I can send pics! good luck!
Shakie 31-03-2007, 10:23 PM Hi
Just read relies to your msg, reccomendations sound great. Do you have telephone number for Marisa. I've seen a stunnung dress i just cant afford hoping i can get it made from picture at a more realistic price. Thanks for help.:)
skala 31-03-2007, 10:52 PM I got mine from Francescas in town across from T J Hughes very helpful and polite. Above Formal Affair, thats the mans bit and Francescas is upstairs!
parcher 01-04-2007, 09:47 PM I bought mine, with a stiffened petticoat, the shoes and a head dress for £10 out of the hospice shop in Scarborough! I could have had a choice of dozens of them but it being a second wedding and me knocking 40 at the time, I had to limit my choice a little. There were none on show but Mum asked if they had any and it turned out they had loads of them in all different shapes and sizes.
rach2005 02-04-2007, 03:30 PM theyre lovely in Blissful daze... I eventually got one from a warehouse that I'd found on ebay in Stockport that bought in stock from businesses that had gone bust. They had 100's of dresses and I tried loads on with a friend
in the upstairs spare room. It was great fun...no pressure!
I finally settled on a pronovia dress with a price tag of £750 and I paid £175! Bargainous!

That is the first bad review I have heard of blushes. I was just about to book an appointment with them. Why was your experience so bad? Everyone on other forums have always told me to go to Blushes xx
rach2005 03-04-2007, 11:37 AM i'll find the reciept out when i get home from work. I thought the ebay shop was something like ejumble? but I can't find it now...

Tanya T 1 04-04-2007, 07:47 PM I havent bought my dress as yet but i have been to Blushes on London Road, they were great, the staff were really helpful and couldnt do enough for me. I will definetly be returning. My sister in law also got her dress from them. Two of my friends have bought their dresses from Pronuptia on Eccie Road tho and they said they were really good!
Good Luck!
butterflylou 04-04-2007, 08:21 PM I got my dress from Blushes aswell and thought the staff were really helpful.
I went knowing what style of dress I wanted but when I tried it on it looked horrible - the staff suggested a dress I would never have imagined for myself but that's the one I ended up buying - it was only the second dress I tried on! They did all the alterations aswell so it was exactly how I wanted it and I was very pleased!
clairerob 04-04-2007, 08:39 PM Did you ring blushes to arrange a trying on session or did you just nip into the shop? xx
Tanya T 1 04-04-2007, 10:16 PM Did you ring blushes to arrange a trying on session or did you just nip into the shop? xx
No you dont make an appointment, just get there early!
Shakie 08-04-2007, 08:39 PM Thanks for that i'll give her a call. x
HornDog 29-04-2007, 10:43 PM Hi im new to this forum and I would just like to ask if anyone else has bought a made to measure wedding dress from Wedding Days on Abbeydale Road then been told that there is an extra cost of almost £100 for altering the dress after the first fitting.
Am I out of touch or would you expect this cost to have been included in the price of the dress? or at least been told in advance.
dizzycow 30-04-2007, 09:46 PM has any-one been to brides direct in barnsley, being from sheffield i didn't want to go all the way there to find out that they are rubbish.i thought blushes were really helpful and as for debenhams have you seen the state of their dresses you'd need to have it dry cleaned before you could even wear it.
HarrietStar 03-05-2007, 09:00 AM I went down to oxford street (cos that's where my mum is) and hit the high street shops - marks and spencers, debenhams, house of fraser and monsoon etc.
Marks and spencers were very helpful but I didn't like any of their dresses, house of fraser were incredibly expensive - might has well of gone to a special bridal shop! monsoon had lovely dresses but their staff were rude and unattentive and the dresses were a weird fit on me. Eventually got my dress at debenhams :)
I think if you want really good service and the 'special this is the one day' type thing then it might be better to go to a proper bridal shop.. but, for price you can't beat the value of the high street chains :)
Lady_Cat 09-05-2007, 10:14 PM Hello all bride and grooms to be!
Just thought that i would mention this.
The other day i was walking through Hillsborough Barracks and as walking by i had a nosey through the windows at The ex-Catalogue 'Big Discount' store in there and noticed some gorgeous dresses that i personally thought were gorgeous for occasions like a wedding.
They were really knocked down in price aswell so if you looking for bridesmaid dress i would advise having a nosey in there as it is not a place you would think of looking.
:)
Lotti 10-05-2007, 08:25 PM I've noticed a few threads about bridal websites and where can I get...? So... if you have come across a website or shop that you really liked, add it to this sticky!
Please don't add to this thread to ask where to get something, just to add something you like and leave a review if you like :D

Clairy 13-05-2007, 03:50 PM Just got an outfit for my Mother in Law's wedding from Liquorice on ecclesall Road. It was made to measure within 3 weeks of ordering and looked fab and fitted perfectly!
Their dresses are also suitable for brides (not traditional) and bridesmaids.

Dear All,
I'm going to start wedding dress shopping, and was wondering whether any of you have been to Avorio in west one. I know its expensive, but does anyone know how expensive?? and what they are like in there? Saw the dresses in the window and they look beautiful!
C x xx
fluffystuff 18-05-2007, 02:07 PM You'll need a small fortune to go there! I havent been (not rich enough!) but I read an article in a local paper or magazine where they interviewed the owner and I seem to remember she said the average spend was £2000
cheers! Thought the dresses in the window looked nice!

spicey 18-05-2007, 05:04 PM I thought confetti.co.uk is very nice, if a little pricey.
Had a look round in the Leeds one last weekend and bought a pretty guest book.
HarrietStar 25-05-2007, 11:55 AM I second confetti - great for ideas although I haven't actually bought anything from them yet. Hoping to hit the london store with my mum to get things like napkins and table decorations :)
Polish Orchi 25-05-2007, 02:08 PM I recently bought my gown from Avorio and can't recommend it enough! The dresses actually start at under £1000 though they do go up to about 3k!! mine was £1500 and it's beautiful. The owner is lovely - couldn't do enough for me. Just can't wait for my dress to arrive now!
happygirl78 26-05-2007, 07:40 PM Blushes bridalwear in sheffield amazing friendly sevice
Ewdenstar 27-05-2007, 04:26 PM In my quest to find the beautiful dress I have ended up with I visited many shops but by far the best was
www.temptationsbydesign.com
They have the best of something a bit different (medieval) and if you like contemporary they do that the best too!
It is a lovely day out to visit the shop (by appointment) in Ashbourne.
;)
fluffystuff 06-06-2007, 10:01 PM I can recommend The Jewel Factory. They do tiaras and jewellery. I got a matching necklace, earrings and bracelet set for around £20. You can pick what crystals/pearls/beads you want etc and really personalise your look.

Jolly Jo 18-07-2007, 01:32 PM Thoroughly recommend The Rising Sun in Bamford - the ladies there make everything feel so easy! Great for winter weddings especially as their function room is so cosy!
www.weddingobsession.co.uk is good for cheap confetti, bubbles etc!
I am getting my wedding dress made, and cannot decide whether to use Danielle Lara or Diana's bridal house.
Does anyone have any experience of either?
Thanks for any help!
amron 08-08-2007, 11:59 AM I am looking for shop floor space to use preferably in an existing shop in a busy area, (but would consider other venues such as warehouse, trade units etc ) Commission on sales.
I am wishing to sell designer dresses at a low price so a complimentary line of business would be perfect but not essential.
The least i could consider is room for two rails of dresses.
I will offer £100 pounds to the finder of such premises, when agreements have been made and premises secured, more than one premise caould be considered.
For more information and details
Please e-mail me on amron.lehtonen@tiscali.co.uk (no junk mail please)
I would consider looking at sharing a premises with someone who sells wedding accessories.
Tanya T 1 13-08-2007, 10:56 AM Hi,
I got my wedding shoes on Saturday from a great place called "The Poppy Collection" in Wakefield, the staff were really helpful and the shop is fairly cheap. My shoes cost me £47 which I thought was really good.
They also sell wedding dresses, bridesmaid dresses, accessories & jewellery, its also a balloon and party shop.

cuddywhite 06-09-2007, 12:02 PM Cassamiento on doncaster road barnsley are fabulous for dresses. I really loved a dress at another shop that i couldnt afford so the lady who runs cassamiento told me to find out the maker and name of the dress and she would see what she culd do. 10 minutes later she told me i could have the exact same dress ordered for £400 cheaper than quoted at the other shop(blushes in sheffield). The service was also fab!

alice8cake 19-10-2007, 12:49 PM Looking for some pre-wedding/honeymoon beauty treatments or a place to take the girls on a hen day?
Check out Waterfall Spa in Leeds. Its women only and has some fantastic and usual treatments!
Here is a review i wrote for them on another site:
From the minute I entered Waterfall Spa I felt I had been whisked away into a fairytale land where I was the princess. The design of the spa is relaxing and fluid with each of the areas flowing into one another seamlessly. The changing rooms are clean and luxurious and you even get your own Hollywood alias printed on your locker swipe card. The spa area itself is roomy enough to hold hen parties and such like, but intimate too so perfect for having a good catch up with an old friend.
We were given menus from which to make our lunch order and we decided to go for the champagne lunch. The food is brought in from a restaurant across the road and you can tell-it was delicious. I chose tempura squid to start, followed by swordfish steak and several glasses of champers!
All the staff were lovely and waited on us hand and foot. I had the ‘Tension Busting Massage’, which I would definitely recommend, as I have suffered with back ache for a long time and could really feel the benefit of the treatment. My friend had the ‘Cucumber and Rose Facial’ as she’s recently given up smoking and thought she’d treat her skin to a fresh start. She said she felt totally revitalized afterwards and that her new skin was definitely an incentive not to start smoking again.
Then we both had a manicure and pedicure in the pink nail area, which was really great because we could relax in loungers and chat whilst we had our nails pampered.
Overall I had a fantastic day and will definitely be going back soon for another day of bliss.
They also have a 2 4 1 deal on at the moment.
enjoy x

redhead77 29-10-2007, 01:04 AM I have just ordered my wedding dress online and would like to share my findings:
- quite annoyingly, there are only a few proper websites for bridal gowns, I mean- site you can actually purchase from. If you are like me and dread going around bridal shops trying on dresses, it's actually quite hard to find another way to to get your dream dress.
The best websites I've found are (sorry still can't post links, so just giving the names of the websites, easy to find if you type them in Google):
>>Bestbridalprices- US bases, got my dress from it, great choice of styles and great prices, even with the extra cost of shipping; 11-13 weeks for delivery. Paid £230 incl the delivery, offers plenty of dresses in the £150-200 range.
>>Zinniabridal- UK based, seem to have good number of wedding dresses in stock and 5-7 working days for delivery. Price range around £350
>>Glamorousgowns- UK bases, 10-16 weeks for delivery. Price range from £199 to >£500

no :( my mum agreed earlier that her and my dad would pay for the photographer as their contribution but they are on a tight budget too so I'm still shopping around.

waddy 02-02-2008, 09:40 AM I recommend the Niagara Penistone Road.We went to have a nosy and it is lovely but they were sadly fully booked for our day.

MissDamasel 05-02-2008, 01:06 PM Hi,
I dont know if it is too far out for you?? but we had our evening function at "The Rockingham Arms" at Wentworth near Rotherham back in November. They have a great barn which holds 120 guests or there ia a smaller room. The barn cost us £150 and we paid for a buffet of £8 per person I think it was.... it went down really well!
The good thing about it is plenty of parking plus they have 11 rooms for guests that have to travel to the party!!
Hope this helps!

It just needs a good home and another outing!

weenireeni 15-02-2008, 09:57 AM Try ebay, or preloved.co.uk

honeyb35 16-02-2008, 11:13 AM my brother and my best friend (different couples lol) both got engaged on valentines day and are looking to get married on the same day next year! i've no idea which one to try and get to change the day, otherwise we'll miss one :( they both want my kids as bridesmaids too!
pinklady 16-02-2008, 11:18 AM familys got to come first, explain to your best friend that if she keeps the date, you and the kids wont be able to go
waddy 16-02-2008, 04:13 PM I agree family first.Have they actually booked the date?Explain to your friend that you would love to attend but your brothers is the same date. They will understand.

KATIEB_23 18-02-2008, 10:26 AM They both only got engaged 4 days ago, and both already have a date set??!!!
That's fast going!!
Surely at this early stage it wouldn't be too inconvenient to change date? Maybe you could speak to both couples and gauge how important that particular date is to each of them, then try & persuade the couple that you think would mind changing it the least?
honeyb35 18-02-2008, 10:28 AM i know! i was enagaged 8 months before i even started thinking dates lol. its cos they both want the 09.09.09 date for some reason. my brother is considering a different date now so fingers crossed!
Bloomdido 18-02-2008, 11:01 AM I am sure one will get derailed somehow so I wouldn't worry too much yet.
Claret 18-02-2008, 02:09 PM I know its a bit close - but what about 08/08/08 or 07/08/09?
Shame I'm too late for 06/06/06 - Ha ha!!
KATIEB_23 18-02-2008, 03:06 PM I am sure one will get derailed somehow so I wouldn't worry too much yet.
You're probably right. Some friends of ours were adamant they wanted to get married on 07.07.07 but then they found the venue of their dreams wasn't available on that date so ended up changing their date by about 6mths!
Classic Rock 18-02-2008, 04:20 PM If one gets married in the morning and one in the afternoon then technically you could get to both ceremonies if they are in the same town. Receptions might be trickier.

they arent, one would be in sheffield and the other one in lincolnshire somewhere grrr.
i remember a few years ago my cousin and my boyfriend at the times mum got married, both at the registry office in sheffield and it turned out the ceremonies were straight after each other so i made both lol

Deeply_Relax 23-02-2008, 07:35 AM Hi,
I am helping out someone with a business plan and we are looking to find out how many brides get married each year and on average how many bridesmaids they have, I have seen some statistics that say 300,000 people get married in the UK, they are magazine stats and not any official source. Does anyone have any source of information.
Thanks
honeyb35 23-02-2008, 09:54 AM would the town hall not be able to help? surely they have records?
honeyb35 23-02-2008, 09:55 AM forget that, it'll just be sheffield unless you contact them all :hihi:

sooz22 11-03-2008, 05:59 PM I have found a dress that I have fallen head over heels for and whilst I have found one stockist in the UK its £160 dearer than the same one in the US including shipping.
Has anyone ordered a dress from the US and did you encounter any problems?
Incase your wondering this is the site and the dress: http://www.thebridalshop.com/Forever_Yours/48125.htm
Not everyone's cup of tea I know but I love it.
Classic Rock 11-03-2008, 06:02 PM The only problem I can forsee (having fallen in love with a dress from a US site too) is the cost of having to return it if it doesnt fit, or doesnt hang properly. US sizings can be a bit different to the UK's. Not only will you have to pay to have it delivered but you'll have to pay to return it if it's not suitable and that'll bump up the cost. Hunt around locally first in order to rule out any possibilities nearby.
weenireeni 11-03-2008, 06:02 PM wow thats a stunning dress!

Yes I'd thought about that. The hollow to hem measurement is 61" and Im 5'7". Its been suggested that I ask for extra lenght that can be hemmed if needed and go a little larger in the size as it will be easier to take in than attempt to let out.
The shipping cost on the site is down as $62, the other site I saw it on was $150 :o
I have emailed them a few queries.
Classic Rock 11-03-2008, 06:19 PM That shipping is really expensive!!!! Maybe if you've really set your heart on it, it might be worth approaching a local dress maker and ask them if they could do a copy.
sooz22 11-03-2008, 06:30 PM The $62 is not so bad, about £30 but I cant bring myself to pay £75 ($150) for it! I guess I need to make a decision whilst the exchange rate is still good.
Just waiting for an email response now.
KATIEB_23 11-03-2008, 07:15 PM Wow thats stunning!
Could you find a shop where you can try it on in the UK so that you know exactly what size you want & how it will hang etc, then go & order it online?
I think that's what I am going to do ;)
sooz22 11-03-2008, 07:45 PM From what I can find all the shops in the UK have to order it in specially.
The manufacturers provide their own size guides online so you can check what you need. One thing I do know is its long enough, hollow to hem is 61" and another lady the same hight as me said a 60" was plenty long enough for her.
If anyone knows a local seamstress or shop that will do alterations on dresses which are not their own (for a fee of course) that would be helpful.

If you phone la Bella Brides at Chapeltown, she may be able to order it for you. Mine was a Forever yours dress from America, she ordered it for me and arranged for me to have all the alterations done by a lovely woman called Tricia,
good luck with your dress and your wedding :D
medusa 11-03-2008, 08:32 PM That dress is really beautiful, but can I ask whether you've factored in the potential cost of VAT and charges if your package is opened by customs? It's quite possible that this will wipe out your £160 savings and still leave you with the potential problems of needing to return the dress or have a different size.
lola2 11-03-2008, 09:32 PM I looked at ordering my bridesmaids dresses from the states but when i did a bit of research there was a few horror stories about dresses not turning up in time. I have found the dress stuff stressful and i am glad i can go to the shop try on the dress, they do all the alterations in house and deal with any problems.
I would definitely try it on before you bought it. The dress i set out to buy just wasn't as flattering on and i ended up going for something different. Have a look on you and your wedding forum you'll find people who've ordered from the company.
katljohnston 11-03-2008, 09:55 PM hello! does anyone have any idea where i could find someone/ somewhere to make me a wedding dress?? i have a good idea of what i would like. thanks!!
sooz22 12-03-2008, 04:48 PM I have found a UK stockist who will supply the dress for £399, just waiting for her to get back to me with more information. :D
uniquelydun 12-03-2008, 10:03 PM i have just finished paying for this gorgeous dress today so it has not been worn or altered in anyway. my reason for selling is that once i have got it home it doesnt match the colour of my 20 bridesmaids, pageboys and ushers so rather than change them i am going to buy the same dress in ivory. the dress is stunning and comes with a matching bag. it is a size 14 and has a corset back so could be made smaller. i have just payed £900 so i am looking for £500 but as i say it has not been worn. any offers welcome.

uniquelydun 13-03-2008, 12:57 AM should i be able to get my money back for my dress if its not right? or even if i dont want it?
i paid £400 deposit for a dress i then didnt want as i was pushed into it by family. so i was told i could then have the dress i wanted but i would loosee my deposit and have to pay again in full, so i then went ahead and paid £900 for the dress i have now. am i entitled to have my deposit back from the old dress that i havnt got? and if the one i have isnt right am i again entitled to a refund?
im just really fed up with my wedding plans at the moment and it seems like iv been dun over. the girls at the shop said they would sell on the first one i paid the deposit for but they would have to get me the next one on the sly so there boss didnt no as really i should pay for the rest of it. so i havnt even been given a recipt for the new one.oh gosh!!
AKITA 13-03-2008, 01:13 PM 1) A full refund.
This remedy is available when the goods have not been ‘accepted’. Under the Sale of Goods Act, acceptance can take place in three ways:
By telling the retailer that you have accepted them.
By acting in a way with the goods which is inconsistent with the seller’s ownership. E.g. if you have altered the goods in any way or customised them then you would be deemed to have accepted them.
By keeping them for longer than a reasonable time without telling the seller that you have rejected them. There is no time specified in the Act and it may vary according to the type of goods. Ultimately, it may be for the judge to decide whether an unreasonable time has passed and whether goods have been accepted. For this reason you must contact the supplier, preferably in writing, as soon as the fault appears. To delay may mean you lose a right to a refund
If acceptance has taken place, then only the following remedies are available:

KATIEB_23 13-03-2008, 03:23 PM sack the bridesmaids, page boys & ushers and keep the dress!!
uniquelydun 13-03-2008, 07:17 PM lol i have gon to sooooo much trouble dressing them that i cant even think to begin to change everyones outfit now. i am getting on to the bridal shop to change it to ivory
uniquelydun 13-03-2008, 07:27 PM will this still apply as i have taken the dress away from the shop??
Star_sprinkl 13-03-2008, 07:30 PM I think it may be different if they are bespoke goods/made to order. As dresses only produced in your size when you order one this would probably come under this heading.
uniquelydun 13-03-2008, 07:43 PM the dress was sent over in a size near to mine and then if i keep it will be taylored to fit. it hasnt been altered in anyway at the mo
looby lou 13-03-2008, 08:00 PM Avorio, its just under the west one complex on division street. If you find it too expensive pm me I may have another contact
sooz22 13-03-2008, 09:22 PM I was told that if I had a dress I wanted ordered in from the US it was 'mine' and mine only, meaning I had to buy it even if I didn't like it. A bit of a bummer as I wanted it to try on to see if I liked it as opposed to buying direct.
Did they mention this to you at the time you ordered?
uniquelydun 13-03-2008, 09:34 PM sooz that would be the case if you were ordering it yourself from somewhere say online from us but in a shop they charge £70 for it to come and then discount it off your dress if you end up buying it. i however have paid for it in full over the past months. i wasnt allowed to take the dress out the shop. so didnt see it in its tru light. so i paid the balance so i could do so and its just compleatly wrong.
sooz22 13-03-2008, 10:28 PM This was a shop, infact they both were.

magicminnie 18-03-2008, 01:27 AM It sounds like such a good idea to order a dress from the states as the exchange rate makes it sound like a really good deal! However, as someone else mentioned, beware the customs!! They are pretty strict and will charge you to have something imported unless you can make it look like a gift (unlikely!). I'd be concerned that it would get lost in transit. Very unlikely to happen, but still a risk. Good luck anyway, sounds like you have found someone in the UK?
sooz22 18-03-2008, 08:41 PM Well, Wales but close enough to avoid Import Tax.

I am getting my adult bridesmaid dresses and the older of the children (11 years old) from the Wedding 2 Studio on Abbey Lane, Woodseats. I found that she has a very good range at reasonable prices, and the lady who owns the shop is lovely and will make sure you are looked after. See the link below for some examples of the dresses she has in.

I am going to one of the high street stores, or maybe Supermarket like Asda, for the younger flower girls as they do some really pretty dresses for that age.
lisalee 21-03-2008, 05:16 PM La Bella Brides at Chapeltown, theyre great, and reasonably priced, hope that helps.
holidayhutch 23-03-2008, 03:04 AM Did you try Cassamiento Sooz, I got my Forever Yours dress from them, they ordered it from the US for me and did all the alterations themselves too.

Yes I did but they said if they ordered it I would have to have it whether I liked it or not and there price was £150 more than another supplier I found...so I will be ordering from her and there is a seamstress a few minutes from me for alterations.

emharrison 25-03-2008, 12:58 PM Hi
I am planning to open a bridal shop in Sheffield, in July this year.
I am looking for advice from you lovely people......
PLUS if you post a reply, print this off and it will be classed as a discount worth 15% off our veils.
I will be just off ecclesall road, opening in July, called Emily. WE will be housing dresses from Art Couture, J Jennings and Charlotte Balbier.
I am looking for advice about your best and worst experiences and what you would like from a bridal shop that you felt others have lacked.
thank you in advance
em
SMK79 25-03-2008, 01:17 PM Hi,
Your new shop sounds lovely. I unfortunatly can't give you any advice, as I have not yet stepped foot in a bridal shop. I am getting married in July 2009. I have set myself a challange to loose 3 stone in weight before I am aloud to try on any dresses. I have lost 2 stone so far in 10 weeks so I am looking forward to coming and trying on dresses at your new shop.
I live at Hunters bar so it won't be far from me. Which end of Eccy rd will you be??
I did want to say that I absolutly love Charlotte Balbier's designs and have already fallen in love with her Ulrika dress!!
I am looking forward to visiting your shop in the summer.
Ok, thanks, will check them out keep them coming...
emharrison 25-03-2008, 01:44 PM Thanks SMK79,
well done with the weight loss, i am sure you will make your target weight, what size are you planning to be?
I actually have ordered Ulrika !!!!!, it is a lovely dress, so will look forward to seeing you in it!!!.
i will pm you with opening date and info so we can book you in to be one of the first to try her!!!!!!!!!!!!!
waddy 25-03-2008, 01:45 PM I have already bought my dress a hollywood dreams one.I hate going and trying on dresses as I am really petite only 5ft and size 10.I think making b2b comfortable is the main thing as I have been to some bridal shops and the assistants were really snooty and very pushy. It's nice to be in a relaxed atmosphere with assistants to give loads of advice.I was told in one that ,that dress wouldn't suit you as you have a problem wth your height!!
emharrison 25-03-2008, 02:04 PM how awful for you !!! glad you have found one that has helped with your "problem"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!. i think some people are either stupid, or very rude, or BOTH!!!
completley agree with environment, I am planning on having dressing rooms upstairs so it is private for the b2b without prying eyes from other customers.
Want it to feel very special for them, not like trying on clothes at topshop, as some places feel like.
KATIEB_23 25-03-2008, 02:36 PM I think your choice of staff is very important - it's really easy to tell the difference between the genuinely nice ladies and the ones just going through the motions, thinking about the comission! Some are obviously just making smalltalk and aren't even listening to the answers - just like the hairdesser stereotype of "so where are you going on holiday this year..." :hihi:
It would be good to put each of the brides in a bustier as soon as they get undressed. I'm not self conscious but I did feel like a bit of a ninny standing in nothing but a thong with my arms in the air at the shop on West St! At Blushes they just ask you straight away what bra size you are and you feel much more comfortable in between dresses. (plus the bride might actually buy the bustier too! ;))
Don't be afraid to say what you think!
Too many assistants just say "ooh that looks lovely on you" "ooh so does that one" ""any shape would suit you cos you've got a lovely figure" :gag: Whilst I realise they are just trying to be nice, and flattering, its not very helpful! I would have much more respect if someone said "no thats not right - what you need is..." cos I would think "she really knows what she is talking about, she has had a lot of experience and knows which dresses suits which shapes"
KATIEB_23 25-03-2008, 02:40 PM Don't be afraid to say what you think!

Well maybe I have directly contradicted waddy's opinion here but I think the trick is... tact! :)
emharrison 25-03-2008, 02:45 PM thanks good points, will take on board bust idea, and will look into this.
keep the ideas coming!!!!!!!!
looby lou 25-03-2008, 03:14 PM Kathy is really lovely and really helpful, good luck
HarrietStar 25-03-2008, 06:35 PM I agree that honesty is important - i know that you need to make a sale, but saying you look lovely in everything doesn't help much, I'd much rather get professional advice on what would actually suit and feel like I've walked away with the right dress. Also, my experience of bridal dress shops was that they all felt quite stuffy and as a result, not very relaxed. It's important to get the right balance between letting brides browse and feel relaxed and being there to give advice and make the sale when they need you.
emharrison 25-03-2008, 06:54 PM completley agree with you Harriet star. I am not prepared to let a bride walk out of my shop with a dress that i dont think was right for her, although some will be dead set on something (therefore tact will be required) but i will not make anyone believe they look good when i know they could look better.
HOWEVER, some just dont listen!, one bride from a shop ordered a very fitted lace fishtail dress, and then found out she would be 8 (yes 8) months pregnant, she insisted that she still wanted that dress. Good on her, but i was dubious about the final look, but she was so sure that it was clear she was happy, which is the main aim.
i am going to put dressing gowns in the changing room so brides can feel free to wander around and look at other dresses, this will all be upstairs so no-one else will be in the room with her except her entourage!. It will be a very personal experience for each bride, with drinks for them and 1 1/2 hr appointments for each bride to take their time and enjoy it.
waddy 25-03-2008, 08:20 PM Well maybe I have directly contradicted waddy's opinion here but I think the trick is... tact! :)I agree with honesty but I haven't a problem with my height:hihi: Probably if she had said maybe if we try a different style to suit a petite frame I wouldn't have been offended and felt more at ease,I definately take advice from the assistants as they have experience in what suits etc,and did so in another shop!!
clairerob 25-03-2008, 09:24 PM OMG i would LLUURRVVEEE to work in a bridal shop. I couldn't think of a nicer job than making people feel like a princess for the day! Are you after anybody? lol. Hope everything goes well with the opening. Just a nice comfy sofa for everybody to relax whilst they wait for the bride and the assistants to be very friendly (like moi hint hint) lol. On a serious note, loads of mirrors and if possible a mirror infront of the mirror so you can see the back detail properly instead of looking over your shoulder. I went to one shop which had the most tinty mirror in history and i couldn't see my full dress. I couldn't believe it! lol xxx
PS Guted I have got my dress now. I would of loved to come to your shop. It sounds so warm and comfortable!x
emharrison 25-03-2008, 10:05 PM thanks claire
if i ever need anyone will pm you immediately, you sound just as enthusiastic as me!. You can always come and have a browse and take a look at our jewelry. I am having a something blue box, with all things (yes you got it) blue, such as french knickers, blue rings, etc. I am also having a something old box, with vintage pieces and hair combs etc.
plus veils, and shoes...... I cant wait!!!!! thanks for the reply, you just reminded me how exciting it is!!.
clairerob 25-03-2008, 10:12 PM OMG that something Blue box idea is AMAZING!!! What a fantastic idea! You are perfect for this kind of business. You really know what brides are looking for in a dress shop (other than just the dresses lol) I have been really stuck with the "something blue" part of the wedding coz everything in our wedding is pink lol. Seriously sooooOOOooo excited for you. I don't think I could handle the excitement if it was me lol. xx
clairerob 25-03-2008, 10:23 PM PS it would be soooo good if you could get like ( not sure how to explain the picture i have in my mind lol.) a big puffee cushion (like big footstools that sometimes comes with sofas) a big wood box basically covered in blue silk or satin something like that and it opens up into a kind of jewelery box style with different levels inside that rise as you open the box and then you can have all the jewelery and knickers etc all laid out all perfect and pretty so when the bride looks in, it feels all precious and special. Do you get what I mean? lol. I have an exact picture of what it would look like and it would just be such a nice little touch I think xx
emharrison 25-03-2008, 10:33 PM i think i know what you mean, we are having smaller versions of this with little walnut trinket boxes with stuff in them.... but i will look into something like what you said as that would be nice.
As for your blue idea - how about - if it doesnt show some blue knickers or just a little bit of blue in them.
a blue ring or have a blue jewel sown into your veil or headress. My mum actually had a blue carnation added into her bouquet. or even a blue silk to wrap the bouquet might work.
But a blue suit goes perfectly with pink (any blue but a dark blue goes well with more vibrant colours and a baby blue looks loevely with a soft pastel pink) therefore your Hubby to be could be your something blue!!!

clairerob 25-03-2008, 10:35 PM Brill thanks for the ideas hun. Hope everything goes well. Don't forget if you need anybody to help I am here, I would love to help with it xx
emharrison 25-03-2008, 10:43 PM thanks
you may one day regret that offer!!!!
waddy 26-03-2008, 10:23 AM I will come and have a look if you have shoes and a something blue box and also some jewellery I still need these I have a dress veil and tiara though.
KATIEB_23 26-03-2008, 11:18 AM I am looking forward to coming to see your shop - July is AGES away though... open sooner! :D
emharrison 26-03-2008, 01:50 PM cant open any sooner, as the dresses take 12 weeks to make and i have my own little wedding in June to organise as well!!!
so am afraid July is earliest, you will just have to wait girlies!!!!

DiamondGirl 26-03-2008, 09:26 PM HI. Im getting married in June. Where can I get a something blue box from before you open? Im getting really excited so I know you must be! x
emharrison 26-03-2008, 11:39 PM Diamond girl, not sure what you mean, the something blue box is a jewellery box with lots of blue things in it....
are you struggling to work out what your something blue will be?? see a reply i gave to another member page before, other than that, let me know what you are looking for and i will try and find it.
waddy 27-03-2008, 05:27 PM I also need a dress for my matron of honor I'm not having bridesmaids. She is 26yrs and I want her to wear dark red maybe a prom dress?Would you be stocking bridesmaids /prom dresses?
emharrison 28-03-2008, 11:30 AM We will be stocking evening dresses bu not until september/october - so probably too late for you. Try monsoon they do nice dresses.
looby lou 28-03-2008, 11:37 AM will you be taking on any staff to do dress alterations???
emharrison 28-03-2008, 11:45 AM I wont be taking on any staff, but i am looking for someone who will do it on a self employed basis, do you know anyone??
linzi_13 28-03-2008, 05:14 PM Will you be having any dresses by bonny?? I haven't yet been in any bridal shops yet, but I feel I'll have the same probems as waddy as I'm only 5ft and size 8 so a nice friendly atmosphere and staff that gives advice in a nice way would be helpful. I'd hate to be told i have a problem with my height! x
emharrison 28-03-2008, 05:59 PM we are not stocking bonny but a shop in barnsley does. We are stocking Art Couture and Charlotte Balbier. If there is a dress that you particularly want to try and the size we stock doesnt show it off i will happily request another sample in a better size for you. Dont let anyone make you feel as though your size is a problem, it just means that the shop assistants have to work a bit harder!!!..

I have bought my bonny dress from 'The Wedding Palace' in Barnsley. I am 5ft1 and also a size 8. Is there a particular Bonny dress you like? Mine has arrived and is in the shop so if its the same one you might be able to try one on that fits you. Mine is the one in the link below, it is in ivory and French Taffeta

lola2 31-03-2008, 07:59 PM I love Charlotte Balbier they are really lovely, i've bought a Jenny Packham but i would have loved to try some of them on. I bought my dress from anoushka at avorio and she insisted i go and try on some other dresses at another shop, despite the fact i knew mine was the one, i'm glad she did because everytime i have a little wobble i think what i looked like in the other dresses and it reminds me why mine is right for me.
I love the idea of the something blue box. The other thing that was really helpful was having recommendations for other suppliers. I got some really good advice so you should keep a note of any good tips you come accross. Hope this helps. I hope it all goes well although i bet it will having spoken to some of the other owners of newly opened bridal shops.
Oh just thought of something else, i tried on dresses in a shop where the sales girl kept putting a veil and tiara on my head i hated it they were nothing like the ones i would of picked and made me really uncomfortable she was just imposing her style. I would wait until someone asked for one, thats just me though.
emharrison 31-03-2008, 08:38 PM lola2 thanks for your reply -
really good points, had the same problem with a shop (tiara and veil) it put me off the dress as well!.
I am keeping my fingers crossed to make sure it goes well!!

This dress is lovely, I do like a lot of the Bonny dresses. I paid £1270 for mine when I ordered it in November 2006 (I know this was probably a little early for an Aug 08 wedding but my mum just couldn't wait to get me in one!) but it was cheaper if you ordered it in organza as apposed to taffeta, I think it was £900+ in the organza. It arrived about 4 months later. The woman in the shop said they normally take between 3 and 4 months to arrive.
I would recommend trying on a few different styles just to make sure you find the right one for you. Good luck and have fun.
Duckling12 03-04-2008, 04:46 PM Em,
All the best for the new shop opening.
My experience stems mostly from being involved in other peoples' weddings as a bridesmaid, but I am now planning my own wedding for spring next year so will hopefully get a chance to come in and try some of your dresses on!
I have a couple of thoughts for you to consider:
1) Don't disregard the entourage! Sister/best friend of the bride, in my experience, has a strong influence over whether the bride thinks a dress is just OK or amazing - they've been invited to give a 2nd opinion and without their endorsement you're not likely to get the sale. I've been completely snubbed by bridal shop staff, made to feel like I was in the way or not worthy of being in the shop as I'm not the one spending the money: you can probably appreciate that that didn't particularly make me want to help them make a sale!
2) Product knowledge is key - As a fledgeling b2b I don't consider myself an expert in what I could or should be wearing, so I need the assistant in the shop to know what will flatter my figure and to match that with the vision of wedding dress that I have. I'll only get frustrated if I try dress after dress on that is nothing like I want, or if I can't work out why none of them look right on. I'm hoping to get some sound guidance the first few times I go looking. This is the skill that will really set your shop apart.
3) Don't cut back on your shop fit-out - if I'm spending more on this dress than any garment I've bought before, then I want to feel like the whole experience is a cut above a high-street purchase. The quality of your shop finishings will reflect the perception of the quality of your dresses. I remember a couple of places I went to with my sister that just felt cheap in the way they were laid out (cheap flooring, crowded racks, plastic folding chairs) and although in actual fact they had nice dresses, both of us felt that as the shop wasn't very nice, it had a negative influence on our thoughts about the dress - hope that makes sense.
Hope that helps and good luck!
emharrison 03-04-2008, 08:11 PM Duckling12,
really good points and agree with you about bridesmaids and how they are ignored sometimes, I have bought a really comfy sofa for the entourage and there is enough room for all to have a look and feel comfortable.
thanks for your reply

XmarblezX 06-04-2008, 02:14 PM I just wanted to let brides to be know about a wonderful wedding dress shop. if you are putting your dress shopping off or if you are a curvy girl then you have to consider going to view this shop. i went after putting it off for a while an to be honest was not looking forward to it at all, im not a dress girl and the the thought of trying to squeeze into a 6 was not appealing. i should not have worried, i was put at ease within minutes. paula and lucy gave me honest views on what looked good and what didnt. the best bit for me was all but one dress i tried on was too big for me! well i have found my dress, the one as some people call it, think paula, lucy and my bridesmaid knew as soon as they heard the squeal i made! im so happy. dont know if i can put web add on here so please pm me if you want info on this shop. paula if you read this i hope your better soon and lucy many thanks to you. cant wait to see you both in july x
DiamondGirl 06-04-2008, 03:00 PM Hi.
Where is the shop? You are allowed to say the shop name and contact details on here. If it helps people then the more the better. Does it specifically cater for larger people or is it for everyone? Thanks

XmarblezX 06-04-2008, 06:39 PM Thats a shame, thats why i kept putting it off didnt want some snotty sales person looking down at me but they couldnt have been nicer and im really pleased with dress had lots to choose from. if it helps someone find there dress then im happy to help
