Surely you dont need 4GB..... windows XP wont even use anything past 2 gb any ways, although it will be detected, windows doesnt make use of it...

good value that!
true about not needing 4Gb, not unless your running a LAMP (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LAMP_(software_bundle)) or M$ equivalent server......

would be more useful (although nearly insignificant) on a 64bit OS as they use more ram on pointers.

i wanted to future proof and got a 64 bit chip then tried 64 bit linux and it really offered no advantage, and too many disadvantages. most programs are simply ported and not re-written to take advantage of the extra registers. again it only becomes usefull when running a LAMP server or more specifically MySQL, as the ram size can exceed 4Gb.
i bought 1Gb with my machine and using linux have never once touched the swap partition, so now i dont have one!

You really see no difference in using a 64bit linux os?

I am dual booting a ubuntu os, and xp.
And the dvd encoding, is atleast 60% faster, in comparison with xp.

Using an overclocked dual core 3800.

well, its the AM2 35watt version, Just done a %20 overclock, 2.20 ghz.

All using the supplied HSF.

What are you using personally? extra cooling?

Aren't the X2 4200's just overclocked X2 3800's anyway?

using a basic water cooler i picked up in Poland for £40, dose GPU card too. keeps the PC around 35 degs all the time even under load.

ram also OC'ed from 400FSB to 500FSB so CPUZ informing me.

lol, no i saw no difference between IA32 and AMD64 linux, i saw similar speed improvements to you when i changed from XP to ubuntu. :)
