I really like guitar-based bands which don't have a singer or in which vocals are a minimal component. Some that come to mind are Mogwai... Slint... Don Caballero... Tortoise... Godspeed You Black Emperor...

Do any local bands or clubs come to mind?

Ok, I found a preview of one of their tracks (http://www.heychuck.com/theespc/releases.html), but it didn't really do it for me.

The Long Blondes, on the same website, sounded half-way interesting though.

Actually, anything guitar-based or electronic, as long as it is not mainstream, would be up my alley. I'm not into punk, preferring stuff without vocals. Anything experimental out there?

Would really like to hear some live music -- have not heard any since moving here. Any more ideas?

Long Blondes are playing The Earl on Queens road next wednesday and they are well worth checking out.
You could check out tarana who do a lot of experimenal improv stuff.
They are currently recording their 53rd album.
