does anyone know what the matter is and how i can get it to stop?

I think that you have inadvertantly turned on the sticky keys which allow users who can only type with one arm to get capitals etc without needing to press 2 keys at the same time.

Try pressing the shift key 5 times in quick succession and seeing if that brings up a message that it's turned the sticky keys off- it usually does.

For future use, 5 quick presses also turns it back on, unless you disable it in the accessibility menu in 'all programs'.
