Hi

Haven't been doing much crochet work but I managed to crochet up a square of the cotton mix sock wool and it feels lovely.

Trying to think what I could make with it.

I did try knitting with some of it but only with ordinary straight metal needles and it all felt a bit strange and wierd and the wrong thing to do. But it did get me wondering and here must be the silliest question ever ...

How difficult is it to knit socks?

Regards

L.

Like most things...difficult at first until you get the hang of it. I found Hecate's tutorial (on here somewhere) a great help on teaching me to knit with DPN's. You'll never know if you can do it til you give it a try :) It's addictive though so be careful!

Very very very difficult, in fact they're becoming extinct! No one knits socks these days. Start on a cardi ;)

Socks are easy to knit! They must be if I can knit them. There is lots of knitting, very little purling and a lot of satisfaction when you turn the heel! They are my favourite thing to knit and far superior to shop bought socks. My life ambition is only to have knitted socks in my sock drawer and no nasty machine made things. If you knit socks, you'll be in good company here. :)

It's exactly how Gempud says; knitting socks is difficult when you first give it a go. Most people start knitting them using four or five DPNs, and when you first start, it feels like you're trying to hold on to a really grumpy, spikey hedgehog. After a few goes, it really does become easy.

I started with the free Regia pattern for a basic stocking stitch sock (I got it from the internet yarn shop McA Direct), plus a couple of little stocking stitch baby socks. It's really surprising how quickly you move on to the more complicated patterns.

If you fancy a go at socks, I'd really recommend it. Most people get hooked after the first pair.

Ta very much! :D

Here's the link (http://www.sheffieldforum.co.uk/showthread.php?t=99738).

It's over a year old now. If anyone looks at it and notices that any of the links are out of date, let me know and I'll fix them.

When I took up knitting again (after learning as a child but never really getting to grips with it) a pair of socks was the first thing I made. So really, they're not that difficult!
I think they were the free Regia pattern as well - stocking stitch throughout, nothing fancy so very easy to follow. Plus they look great as it is 'magic' wool :)
Try Web of Wool - I got a kit with wool, needles, stitch markers and pattern.
Or I think Jill might have them?
