View Full Version : My guinea pigs acting strange

Ok so Dandylion is my fraidy pig (literally scared of her own shadow) and acorah is my brave pig. There isn't anything she won't play with or go...At least in my bedroom at my parents house.

Well anyway I no longer live there and so me and my girls moved into a 1 bedroomed flat...I thought it would be great. They have everything they had always had plus a regular supply of fresh greens as I now have to do weekly shopping myself and buy for them whereas before I only bought if I went past...HOWEVER:
Acorah now refuses to come out of her bed in her cage unless it's for food and drink and now drags all her greens and treats in there with her and Dandylion is being insanely brave and wanting floor time (Although she's still a bit skittish when I come too near).

Then on top of that Acorah started making birdy noises (Sorry can't describe it any better than chirping, when I heard my sisters pigs do it once I was convinced it was the bird, but Acorah does it so much softer) the first two nights we were there. Now Acorah's quiet and Dandylion is purring and waggling her bottom as she walks around the cage.

It's nice that Dandylion is adapting so much better to her home now we've moved, but I'm so worried about poor Acorah, she's not herself at all. My sister even says that Acorah was trembling while she was being held that first night. But when I held her she wasn't...

HELP? ADVICE?

The "chirruping" you describe is exactly that, like a bird song. You are very honoured to hear that, not many piggy owners do, its a good sign. The trembling, was she making a purring noise at the same time? If so its also a good sign.

As fro the move, just give them time, they'll soon settle down :)

Nope, my sister says it was more like she was shaking with terror... Hence why I'm so worried.

So the chirping's not her being scared? God that's good to hear :) I've heard it three times once after one of the lesser floods (Are we still calling them floods after monday) and again teusday (After the flood) and wednesday. But if it's a good noise that makes me feel so much better.

Oh yea its most definately a good thing, I'd give my left arm to be present when a piggy starts to chirrup.

Hmm, the trembling thing I wouldn't worry about unless other symptoms show like trembling on its own in the cage, becoming withdrawn or stopping eating cos piggies can go downhill VERY fast.

The puring and wiggling the bottom is called rumble strutting, it means they are getting fruity ;)

She has withdrawn a lot, as I say she stays in her piggy bed almost all of the time now. My sister thinks it could be that the flat smells strange to her...

Hehe naughty dandylion. She should be careful getting fruity around Acorah or she'll mount her again and that'll give her a scare.

hehe, well I've heard three piggies do it now. My sisters, my mums (who stopped everytime she looked at him and caused her to think that she was going mad) and now Acorah.

You should see if you can note if they do it at any specific times or anything like that, It'd be interesting to see if there are any links

Umm, no there aren't my mums pig did it like 2/3 weeks ago, just before the floodings started and my sisters do it at random intervals. Often when the bird's nearby and tweeting.

Cool. Well I'm glad I helped you a bit, ease your worry :)

Yeah, thanks so much. Any idea how to get Acorah feeling happier though? I'm concerned that she's staying hidden so much when she used to come out of her cage nearly every day.

Just give her time, how old is she? Some of mine can get a little down sometimes but give them something they totoally go nuts for and usually they come back to normal. It may just be the whole moving thing, as soon as she realises that its ok she'll be ok :)

She's a year and a half, born at the end of last Jan.

I asked cos some of my piggies withdraw with age but at her age its probably because of the move :)

Yeah, I just wish I knew how to make it easier on her. She's never moved before. I mean she was born and given to me within a month. And even then she was from my sisters litter. So same house.
