Eh up dean.
When I saw you n adam t'other weekend and you'd ran the night at the Student Union I thought you might have been using that each week.

However if Pin-Up is back at Fez then it's all good
Looking forward to getting back to Pin-Up to be fair :P

Anyway what about downstairs? What's happening with it? Who's got it?

Possibility of utilising that space once a month Fri or Sat?

They're refurbishing it with plans for it to open next year according to the Star. It's going to have a more laid back feel and attract people who are in to dance music apparently.

Scuba
11-12-2004, 11:45 AM
we're not entirely sure as to what's going on downstairs, there's going to be a full refurb... i know phonetics want to get back in there on a saturday and i think that they'll want to run it in-house on a friday...

it's unlikely that it will open until at least feb.

Dont know why everyone's pretending that the fez club is all new etc....it's the same people who own the place init ? The ones who own matrix and vijays. The same ones who turned the club into a craphole within the space of a couple of years.

Reall shame that there aren't enough good venues tht people can put on their nights on. there's a lot of interesting nights but these places always want to just put on the same old rubbish. why hasn't someone more underground got a venue? a

my spies also tell me that its a old manager from gatecrasher and bed who is be running the club ? I've also heard dirty rumours that the phonnetics night is going to be replaced by another crappy house night ? Is this ture scuba ? Be rubbish to have the same music on each floor on each night. where is the imagination ? saturdays were always the best in that club. one week i'd go to scuba the next to phonnetics and between them they covered all the music i want to hear. really sad to hear that it's probably going to be a new version of gatecrasher or bed - both of wich are **** in my opinion. this city is crying out for a bit of variety on a saturday night.

ive missed these clubs being open but from the sound of things its going to get worse not better.

feels like its getting that way. without being melodramatic i work all week as a nurse (day off b4 someone asks why i'm sat here typing while some poor bugger dies) and so my nights out are very important to me and its been so bad in the past few months ive considered moving city!!! i know quite a few people who feel the same.

this is the first time ive joined a webby thing. bit addictive init?

a couple of things...

firstly, it is a bit premature to be judging the place before it's opened, everyone is making a concerted effort to do something good with the place and have a new start. the owners and the new licensee are giving us the opportunity to programme and run the club in the way that we've always wanted it to be run; with the punters in mind and providing a quality and varied monthly programme. you are correct that the new licensee is steve rucastle who was the licensee from bed/gatecrasher, and i can say that he is one of the best in the city. but this does not mean by any stretch that the club has any plan or intention of being the next gatecrasher, licensees/general managers do not generally get involved too much in the promotions.

secondly, dont believe everything you hear, rumours are always to be doubted just by their very nature, not to be propogated.

there has never been any problem in the fez club (now the room), only with the friday night in the downstairs venue (which is not to open until at least feb next year.)

i really dont understand why some people (a minority) arent behind the re-opening of one of sheffield's treasured specialist music venues... is gatecrasher all anyone wants? whether people like particular nights at the venue, in the last year alone we have played host to truely leftfield music from the likes of amp fiddler, chicken lips, the rapture, ivan smagghe plus some of the cities most respected djs such as chris duckenfield, pipes and winston hazel...

i'm not trying to say anyone's opinion is not valid, all i suggest is don't be cynical! encouragement and positive thinking is constructive.

A friend of mine got a right kicking in there, 100% completely unprovoked too.

Still, I'll be trundling along to investigate if they put anything decent on.

What should I expect music and atmosphere wise??
Also what are prices like??

Pleasse don't get me wrong!! I would be so happy to see both clubs open with specialist underground music at the centre of the programme but the people who told me such things are very well placed to say thatthat the new manager is going to make it into another gatecrasher. Also from people I know who did work with the owners they have no love for any of the kinds of music we all want to see on.

I know that you have got a night to promote and i think scuba will do so well!! but theres no point pretending the venue isn't pretty much the same.

Goldenlady

Also can you tell me as they don't seem to use this messagevoard if it is true that phonnetics has gone ? they brought so much mad music from loads of different countries. music i dont even know the name of. and coalistion ?

i'm still not convinced

1. how can the manager make it the next gatecrasher when it is a 300 capacity underground venue with a night like scuba on a saturday night? if he wanted to (which he doesnt) he would fail...

2. the owners dont know much about the music which is why they are no longer involved whatsoever in the programming of the club, they have left that to us.

3. i am not pretending, i am trying to make people aware of what we are doing with the place... a venue is a space and yes it is the same space but please be aware that there are many improvements from the bottom up which only the greatest of cynics or disgruntled individuals will discredit.

sergeantb
14-12-2004, 10:22 PM
Gatecrasher is great, its also commercial, but dont get me wrong, i still love the place, however.....

1) keep fez club underground
2) keep scuba underground

= Great small club. Great atmosphere. Full of people who love the music [unlike gatecrasher] = Success!

i dont think you're going to be convinced by anyone other than your cynical friend.

we really dont know about downstairs yet, i cannot vouch for phonetics as that is the result of meetings and discussions yet to happen. the only thing the manager and owners are concentrating on right now is getting the upstairs sorted and moving into the new year... then we'll all be able to breathe for a minute and make more plans.

this is not spin, i just really dont know...

as for the venue downstairs it will certainly be brought up to date and be completely re-fitted in a more open plan style, that much we do know... but that does not mean the next gatecrasher, this is the last thing we want... we already have 1 too many of those.

Nothing to do with one cynical friend mr scuba. It's a whole lot of people who are not being cynical but know people who have been involved in the club....

Also it made me laugh as you sounded scaryley like Tony Blair when he calls anyone who disagreeds with him a cynic.

But all that to the side, i wish scuba all the best and really hope the fez club and (lets hope downstairs) works out the way you want it to. The more i hear the less i believe though.
