Every hot summer day you hear another story about someone drowning in a river or canel.

Who the hell would want to swim in the River Don or on the canel.

Would you swim in the River Don or the canal? :o

I wouldn't personally but I suppose the fact that it's free could be an incentive to some.

I work about 200 yds from where that poor kid died and I must say the canal water doen't look too enticing. There's a brown scum on it most of the time and at this time of year the water looks like pea soup it's so thick and green. The river next to it is no better, it's used as a local dumpit site by a car body company and a builders' merchant not to mention the 'fridges and cookers left by the local sparks.

So no, I wouldn't swim in t'Don or t'canal.

LAst year all the swimming pools offered a really good deal for the kids, I think it was something like £1.20 per session which was really good. Don't think I've seen it anywhere this year though.

As a canal enthusiast, I have visited canals all over this country, also cycling the towpaths for years. It is to me a lovely environment especially in rural areas, peace and quiet, natural beauty, wildlife, delightfull settings.

However, there is no way that I would swim in the canals, as one has only to read the literature from British Waterways to know that one can catch a disease carried by rats for which there is no known cure.

So, it needs wide publicity and information to tell these youngsters who swim in the canals just what the risks are.

The price for a swim at Eckington baths is around £1.20 and has been for ages. I regularly take my little brothers, but it still doesn't stop them wanting to mess about in Treeton Dyke!

Outdoor swimming in natural, less artificial and monitored areas is always going to appeal to kids. It did to me - rafting on Treeton Dyke or down the River Rother was a must in the summer of the 70's and 80's.

thanks taxman, I was looking for that, myself!

(d' you know, I'm sure the little black child, wearing the pale jumper on the left of the screen, at the beginning of the clip, is a very much younger incarnation of Terry Sue Patt, who played Benny, Tucker Jenkins' pal in "Grange Hill")

It was on Sunday. I was tempted to jump into a quiet little lake I found in West Lancs.

I used to swim in the river Wye on my way back home from the pub on a summer's evening when I was about 17. Absolute madness, I'm sure people drown in the Wye every year too.

Certainly wouldn't do it now and certainly would never have done it in Sheffield.

I swam in the Trent a couple of times as a teenager and probably wouldn't again. There are some sites that do list good (hopefully safe) spots to swim in our rivers and lakes though. If I was that kind of bloke I'd put up a link, but I'm off out in a mo.

I didn't realise it was on IMDB. it's confirmed my thoughts that it was him, anyway.

You know, you've made a happy woman feel very (VERY) old, as he's nearly six months younger than me!!!!!! :shakes:

I used to swim in rivers, lakes dams, all sorts when I was younger. Come out covered in leeches! I'm sure there are quiet, outdoor places you can swim safely, but it would be irresponsible for them to be promoted as such without lifeguards present in the current world.
