All,
I would like to put it to the proud people of Sheffield that the iPhone infact sucks. It is so locked down to the carrier, and the inability for application developers to create their own software, means that it actually sucks very very hard. It doesn't even have 3G.
Still apple Xcode is a nightmare to develop in anyway, I'd rather use emacs, i i don't like emacs. And i bet thats what they'd want us to use to make apps for it. Its very pretty, of course, its apple.

Any responses?

Can we discuss this more than "dont buy one then" ?

Well, that's a fair enough point of view I suppose. You've spent much time in xcode?

Web postings from americans who've actually used the phone are mostly positive - the software and physical construction both said to be excellent.

The carrier thing - well, that's too bad if you're in America and want a choice - we're still to find out how it will be released over here. I hadn't seen myself as a purchaser but since my elderly (but tough!) nokia 3310 got wet in the recent Rains it's started cutting out mid-call so I'm going to have to change model soon. If only my elderly ipod would die too. Unfortunately it's not showing any signs of imminent demise - and the iPhone is a lot of £. I'd say the purchase cost is the biggest problem.

Actually, I don't think it's a very fair point of view at all. Be fair, and test one first before rubbishing it.

More competant people than the OP-er have all praised this iPhone, but noted there are certain limitations. For a device that is totally different to any mobile phone every sold, it is very good. In fact, I think it's a brilliant first attempt.

Did Nokia get it right first time? No. Did Samsung? Did Motorola? No. That's why they still make new phones - each one meant to be better than the last.

In the world that a convergance device is aimed at, Apple have done an exceeding good first attempt. On the one hand, the interface is said to be brilliant, and on the other, the lack of 3G will deter many from purchasing it. And as it is an addition to the iPod line up, it's music and video capabilities are stunning.

I don't think 'any' mobile phone manufacturer has made a phone that is perfect for me. My 'wish-list' would be:

Universal Mass Storage (to replace my USB stick)
Radio (to listen on my way too and from work)
Good quality camera
And a fantastic looking and easy to use mobile phone

Despite the iPhone being Apples first attempt, they have done a damn site better at it than anyone else ever has, and made a very good phone that is very good value (considering it is a phone, an iPod and an Internet device rolled into one - that's three separate devices you can get rid of).
