Plans are set to be unveiled regarding the Cathedral Quarter, one of Sheffield's most beautiful areas, albeit presently in a state of disrepair.

But the plans all sound - so far - like what you'd expect for any other area of town. Namely: More pubs and restaurants.

Does this area, with the hidden gem of Paradise Square, REALLY need to go in this direction? The name of the quarter itself should indicate that this is one area that doesn't need to become saturated with more licenced premises. Or am I wrong?

Let's have something a little bit more original. Sure, clean up Paradise Square. It would be nice to be able to rid the square of cars. Although unlikely due to the premises being owned by numerous Solicitors, it would be a great location to hold a Christmas Market set in Edwardian splendour. The area should be lit by gas lamps and should become an exhibition square.

Any other city would, I feel, have made this region a jewel in its crown. I look forward to seeing some improvements, but I honestly feel in this instance, more bars and pubs are not what is required.

Good idea, Ousetunes.

I HATE the idea of more pubs and such in that area.

Tidy it up, clean it up see what can be done to 'open up' the area more, but more pubs and eateries? Oh please, not again.

I have to agree with you on this one.

The City Centre is not going to be regenerated and improved by the universal creation of drinking establishments. The CQ plan is far more wide ranging than bars, but as this is what the Council wish to focus on this is what people will be discussing.

The Cathedral area (I so HATE 'Quarter') has a few outlets already that are OK in the daytime yet empty at night. The Blue Ball suffers from almost no trade despite many attempts at improvement and refurbishment and theming. The Wig and Pen is fabulous and does great lunchtime and post-work trade but not so much in the evenings. Sola is the same.

Sheffield just cannot sustain more A3 outlets in this area. What it can sustain however is more, and better paid professional jobs rather than yet more low paid civil service and bank admin posts.

a plan that produces more pubs and eateries is only going to make a mess of the area and increase the already massive pressure on parking, a simple clean up would be far more effective

besides that why do we NEED more pubs and expensive food places in the city centre, dont we really have enough? are all the pubs heaving at night?
